What was classic and iconic about Mr Lynde was how he had a hilarious snappy answer to the question, perfectly timed for maximum laughs, but then would retreat into pensive thought to get the answer correct for the contestant. He was more often than not correct, but missed enough times that you could never say with certainty he knew the questions ahead of time. He was a comic genius. If you ever watch the old Match games, Richard Dawson would frequently give a very good impression of Lynde. Often imitated, but never duplicated.

It took the wind out of his sails for a few rounds when Connie Stevens failed to remember that he was in Bye, Bye Birdie. He answered the next few questions seriously, without trying to be funny. He bounced back with a vengeance, though. Knowing now about his insecurities and fears of being forgotten and a nobody, it must have crushed his soul a little for his biggest movie role to be forgotten by one of his co-stars on the same panel. He was a true trailblazer. If only he knew how influential he truly was.

MIKE ARE YOU STUPID
Man I made sure I watched anything Paul Lynde did. He was ALWAYS quick & hilarious

Elizabeth II died on September 8th, 2022. And never abdicated.
Who cares if Paul Lynde received his answers beforehand? It's the way he DELIVERED the lines that made them so funny---he sure made Buddy Hackett roar in some of these clips!

On the spot witty funny comebacks. Paul Lynde for the win.
Love how Buddy Hackett laughs so hard at Paul’s jokes
That snarky and often self-deprecating delivery -- so often accompanied by thinly veiled references to his homosexuality -- was Lynde's trademark and just one of the things that set him apart from other TV comics of his day. Even the jokes that would normally fall flat usually still worked because of his quick wit and impeccable timing. That voice of his was -- and remains to this day -- instantly recognizable. Often imitated, never duplicated.

@@aspenrebel, that was a joke that Michael Landon told on a Dean Martin roast back in the 70's. He said he was always asked if the Cartwright men were gay. He said, "I'm here to tell you that the Cartwrights were never gay. Then he said the Hop Sing line.
I saw the 2 hour length and laughed... and laughed... and laughed! I can't believe I listened to the whole thing. Strange but remarkable body of work. Kudos to Mr. Lynd for taking us back!

A lot of men have a two-hour length. (Maybe channeling Mr. Lynde right now, or trying.)

Paul Lynde was brilliant! Way above and beyond contemporary media stars!
I used to love watching Hollywood Squares with my grandmother and he was my favorite panelist, always in the center square when I watched. I thought he was hilarious when I was 8 years old and didn't understand much of anything lol. I think he's even funnier now that I am an adult. RIP....gone too soon.
