Paul John Bold, Peated Indian Single Malt Whisky
Ойын-сауық
Episode 428. As the heat of summer fades, I thought it might be good to turn to some peat. Paul John releases quality malts and this is their most heavily peated release. It's good, and certainly would help keep you warm on a windy fall or snowy winter day! What are your thoughts? #pauljohn #whiskytube #whiskyneighbour

It is, a little young or hot. But tasty!
Cheers Jon. I'm having Rum again... whiskey stopped being fun for me. I'm sticking to just a few mid priced favorites and that's it. I enjoy watching your videos so I continue to watch. I get a pour here and there at a local pub to try things I don't need a whole bottle of. I just really still enjoy my Johnnie black after 30 years and it's enough for me.

I really respect that. I still like the journey, but the minute that shifts, I have about 10 I will buy and that's it. I already know I enjoy them, so why keep buying so many releases that turn out OK, but not great?!
Paul John is pretty good across the board. Always enjoy them - not mindblowing, but good sippers. Cheers Jon.

Agreed!
Hi Jon! Thanks for bringing this distillery to my attention. Waiting for it to cool off a bit more where I am before I look for something peaty. I think it's a great idea to find replacements for some of the bottles that have become harder to come by whether due to price or lack of availability. Have a great week! Cheers!

This is a descent distillery. Most of the releases I have had are more modest. Well priced, good flavours, but not earth shaking. What do you think I should consider to replace Lagavulin 16? I am struggling, as I enjoy that one.

@@WhiskyNeighbour I'm honored that you'd ask but I'm a bit out of my element with scotch. Back when I used to drink more scotch, I recall Laphroaig had a couple of peaty and smokey expressions that I liked. Nevertheless, I'm curious to see what you and your subscribers come up with. Summer is winding down in Texas as the kids go back to school in early August. Now if only the hot weather goes away, I can enjoy more higher-proof whiskey.

@@rayk1411 I hope your return to school is awesome! Thanks for the insight, I hope this is a fun journey! Peat is close to my heart.
I’d like to try this one, I had a Paul John a few years back, I forget it’s name but I much preferred it to the speyburn 10 even though it was a NAS. Luckily peat usually improves a lot of young whiskies so I don’t think I’d be disappointed purchasing it especially after your review, cheers!

This Bold is good, and I agree, peat goes well with youbg whiskies. Certainly something to consider when fall comes around!
We did a small series on Indian whiskies a couple of years ago, where we tried a few Paul Johns. As far as I recall, they where kind of middle of the road. I like the roasted coffee notes you are describing here though 😋

They do pull more middle of the road. But good flavours IMO

Thanks for sharing Jon. I enjoy both whisky and rum. What are the 10 whisky’s you will keep buying just out of curiosity? Well you could do a video lol…

I should! Running out the door. I will list later. All closer to value picks
Speaking of lagavulin, my girlfriend just bought me the 10 year. Can’t wait to crack it open tonight, I have the 8,9 and 10 but the 16 still evades me after it’s 50% price increase during the pandemic 😢

The price jump is really hard to take. The 16 has been a standard on my shelf for years, but now, I am just not sure I can justify the cost. 10? Which release is that? I have had the 8, 12 and 16. I ha e seen the 11 year Offerman. I think 9 was the Game if Thrones.

@@WhiskyNeighbour it’s a travel retail 43%, first fill ex bourbon casks. really enjoying my first dram as we speak though, much closer to the 9 than the 8 but bringing in much more of a wood influence, it’s good! The lagavulin and laphroaig 16 years are top of my list but too expensive for me too. I will take the hit one day, probably the laphroaig first. I’d love the 11 year, that’s the stout cask release right? I’d love to see how peat interacts with the stout, I bet it’s wonderful

@@WhiskyWars ah, cool! Nice to consider cask influence on their spirit. Yes, the 11 is stout cask finished, but I have not had it.
Certain that is a sample I have from Sean/YEGWhisky Knights

Cool. When you try it, let me know what you think. This sits on the shelf for $65 and I got it on a steal at $52. Really worth that price IMO.

I'm still sleeping on Indian whiskeys. I keep wanting to try them, but then I hear that they're kind of just 'alright', and I end up going for something else instead..

There are many in shops here that are not good. However Paul John and Amrut put out good releases. The core range here for Paul John is solid. Not amazing, they have those too, but good tasty liquid IMO, and a good price.
