Paul Gilbert gets "teary eyed" over the melodic beauty of this gem - a string skipping, E minor lick that ignores the "trouble making" minor 6th note. He also teaches us that “yellow is the color of learning”!

He is for sure.
The GOAT teacher. Knows what everyone likes and teaches it perfectly.
Paul was my idol growing up, and this video is yet another example of a big reason why. I'm sure he's done thousands of lessons like this now, and his love of music and the joy he gets from sharing his knowledge of it is always so evident. He's a world-class talent, and also a plain genuine guy.
I wish there were more guys like Paul. He makes everything fun, at least until I discover I can't play half of his amazing stuff, lol Of all the guitarist I've really admired, I'd most like to meet Paul.

He's awesome. A natural musician all around. He's a great teacher amd understands how to get a message through. I agree, he's one of my favorites as well!
I love Paul Gilbert. The man is a brilliant guitar player and brilliant guitar teacher. And his outfits are insane! That yellow outfit is a perfect mix of Michael Jackson Thriller and Kill Bill.

His enthusiasm is so contagious. makes me just want to crank to 11. You can tell he loves teaching and that his students and fans adore him cause he is genuine and kind and just wants to help others play. Love Paul's new stuff. Racer X is awesome but I love his new stuff. Go check his youtube channel he is posting tracks from his new album.
The Paul Gilbert lessons are all amazing! I'll be rewatching this on with a guitar in my hands soon!
I feel like crying when I see Paul growing old... Always feel positive seeing him playing.
He is so far the best teacher in my opinion. Silence followed by a deafening roar was so awesome
Paul Gilbert is eternal, period! So unique!
Paul... is the Best Natural Teacher I've Ever Seen...💥💥💥💥💥
Paul's my favorite guitarist. Guy's got shredding chops for days yet is an unabashed fan of pop music. He's like a taller, shreddier John Mayer. Also learned a ton of stuff from his instructional vids as a kid. Loved his Intense Rock series and his teaching style.

please dont compare one of the most dangerous guitar in the entire planet in sheer technique and virtuosity to john mayer . its disrespectful seriously ; john maybe good but nowhere near the ultimate players such as PG
@dajoler

@@_azu7 Yes, I can and just did. You know that Paul Gilbert loves pop music and has covered a song by the Spice Girls, right? And John Mayer's not exactly a shredder, but his guitar skills have been praised by Eric Clapton himself. That's why I compared him to Paul -- neither of them are elitist tools and are able to comfortably make and enjoy different genres of music.

@@dajoler Eric Clapton is a good songwriter but do you even know his technical standpoint? PAUL GILBERT BRUUUH WHAT GRASS YOU SMOKIN MY 11 year old brother can play john mayor / Eric Clapton shit . PAUL GILBERT dont use that name aside those mfs without any chops . they're good in poppish shit but sheer technique?! pg can eat them roast them grill them in seconnnds . And yeahh i have listened to 2 become one , john mayer and EC himself could never come up with that solo portion in that song ; neverrrrr though PG plays stairway's solo when he plays it live

@@_azu7 Holy shit. I think I just got brain cancer from your post. I think I'll end this by saying that Paul Gilbert himself would be the first one to say that you can have all the chops and technical ability in the world -- if you can't write anything memorable, then there's no point, is there? Oh, and good luck to your 11 year old brother. If he's able to play John Mayer or Eric Clapton, then he's clearly a lot smarter than you and will actually be able to have a career in music, unlike his older brother.

John Mayer is 6’4”. How tall is Paul?
Watching paul in any video as playing live studio or teaching is always a pleasure. Specially if he teach anything so fkn amazing how simple he makes it
Paul really was the first technical player that I felt I could actually understand and for me started a decade ago on furthering my understanding relationship and journey with the guitar As I’m sure he has helped so many others Mad respect thanks for all the lessons Paul you freaking rock It’s like if bill nye the science guy could shred friendly engaging challenges you a total blast all charm
Pual Gilbert! The best teacher ever, Rock n Roll! 🤟 He is really enjoying every sigle note. That's real passion in vaines..
Just bought a new guitar from Sweetwater, and now I'm watching Paul Gilbert. Life is good.
I had the pleasure of taking a private lesson from Paul almost a decade ago and this "leaving out the sixth" thing was something he mentioned and I've kept it in mind ever since ;-) It's a troublemaker over most chord changes, that sixth!
This guy is truly a sage and a master. He is "religious" in his love of guitar. So beautiful to watch, listen, and learn from.
He's enjoying explaing whats up on his licks. I really admire this guy. The reason why im into neoclassical.
Best tone I’ve ever seen Paul get.
Paul Gilbert hands down one of my favorite guitar players.
"Because yellow is the color of learning" oh man this guy is the best
Paul gilbert has helped me out alot with my playing. Keep teaching Paul G!
Remember, seeing Paul back in the Racer X days!! Your still the MAN!!!!!!!
It’s awesome! Paul Gilbert is one of the coolest guys out there
Great lesson. Seems so simple to come up with these kinds of things, but a lot of us overlook the possibilities. Thanks so much.
so humbling and awesome thanxxx
you are amazing teacher, Paul
Riff has similar style to a Babymetal song called 'Syncopation' but with less slides. Gotta love Pablo Gilbert. He is able to 'teach' across so well in his videos which not all players can do well. Any yep, lots of Eric Johnson vibes as others have said.
Great guitarist and nicest guy around.
Always the master class
very nice of paul gilbert. he teach more thorough as he gets older.
2 days. Sore fingers, but got it now! Ace lick. Cheers Paul 🎸🤟🏻

Thank you SW / AV folks / and Mr. PG! Yellow is the color for learning, was it? lol Best thing about Paul Gilbert is yes. Thank you for creating and sharing this inspiring, fun, educational jem - cheers!
Paul Gilbert rock's!!!
The "Nice and slow, and I want you to stomp it." line is the most typical guitar teacher phrase, except for maybe "less is more"
Awesome! Got a bit of an Eric Johnson feel. I love it.
Good job 👍👌
Genius as always
Paul looks like he was standing in for Uma Thurman on Kill Bill and he killed them with his massive riffs.
whoever was audio on this was amazing
Paul is my guitar idol
He is like that mad scientist of guitar!
Guitar teacher to the universe - in a yellow jumpsuit 🤟🏻
pls paul more vidos of bluse and more lessons
The first 2-3 notes that Paul is playing reminds me of waves from Guthrie Govan, thats very cool!
Wait wait! Where's my yellow sweater?? Getting my yellow sweater and back in a minute!!
Purple guitar looks great.
Best guitarist in the world.
Paul Gilbert is becoming the Alfred E. Newman of guitar!
The moment he begins, everything sounds cool after that
Paul Gilbert always delivers. He's just the greatest. Do you guys remember what drive pedal he used here into the Marshall? Another great video!

Simply the best guitarist around;)
Legend.
Man the color scheme going on here is like every 90s kids TV show!
Man i did shit on his looks for a while now, but that yellow stuff is fire, take balls to use it, hes rocking it, luv from Brasil
im easy man, i see Paul Gilbert, i smash like
You run out of strings to skip into ? Just buy an 8 or 9 strings on sweewater and continue this exercise. If you still need more, buy double, triple or six necks guitar. Anyway, I love Paul more and more as he gets older. His playing is still fast and also puts emphasize on how the solo sounds beautiful.
‘Yellow is the color of learning..’ - caught me off guard there 😂
His transformation into David Letterman is almost complete.
Will never be able to play like that, but would love one of them YELLOW jump suits with all the zippers. GO Paul!!
Lol I’ve been playing the pink panther I hear it here play it finger style . Great exercise.
master paul love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice
Anyone know what is that foot, stomp, drum pedal thing he is using? Thanks.

What model is the pink Ibanez in the background, please!?
Don't worry, Paul! I like it as much as you do
Ok, i want that exact guitar, get it in stock Sweetwater and you’ve got a sale! And Paul is the MAN!
I think I've heard something similar to this lick(different rhythm obviously) on Gilberto Concerto which was itself influenced by Bach.
What do you call that thing Paul is tapping on with his left foot which he seems to use as a metronome?
The sixth. That one note that made the Kashmir riff as awesome as it is. And you're leaving it out?.... 😀🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤘
Hi everyone! Out of subject, what the name of the support he use for holding bottleneck? I try to found this by myself but I don’t have any answer… Thanks a lot for all !
Come on Paul I loved the sixth

Notice that Carlos Santana oftentimes likes to ditch the sixth too.
He's getting old, and he's still young at the same time ...
Can somebody explain to me the purpose of skipping the sixth? I'm just getting into learning more about theory and would love to get some context here.
Top 👌
Very nice shoe paul, what brand where u bought it?
I want that purple fireman
Can someone please explain why the 6th is "trouble making"?
Paul Gilbert is like the bill Nye of guitar
Didnt you guys do a giveaway?? Who won?
Pablo Gilberto!!!!
One thing he doesn’t mention is when he goes from the 3rd string to 4th he uses the first finger to avoid rolling the second finger. Once I figured that out it felt much smoother.
Magic yellow plays a purple power house in 6th’s I thought it said sith that’s my job 😈 🤘🏽
Playback speed 50% = Drunk Gilbert. Lmao Amazing lesson

Taking keyboard licks into the guitar. Reminded me of frank gambale's exotic sweep lessons. 1989. Check it out.
Loved this lesson. Tid bits sound like Eric Johnson. What I didn't like... is that for some reason this reminded me that at some point I am gonna get old... for good... sad face...
