Ooit internationaal gevierd fotograaf, later verguisd en in vergetelheid geraakt. De documentaire Paul Blanca, deze film redt je leven van Ramón Gieling is een indringend, licht surrealistisch portret van Blanca in zijn laatste maanden.
Met de in 1958 in Amsterdam geboren fotograaf Paul Blanca ging het snel en hard; in de jaren tachtig brak hij door met strak gekadreerde, provocerende foto’s en zelfportretten.
De esthetisch doorwerkte opnamen toonden Blanca met een vers in zijn rug gekerfd portret van Mickey Mouse, met de kop van een rat diep in z’n keel gestoken terwijl de achterpoten en staart er nog uitsteken of als lijk overdekt met bromvliegen. Daarnaast waren er ontroerende foto’s, zoals het portret van een naakte Blanca die zijn eveneens naakte moeder in z’n armen houdt, vlak voor haar overlijden.
Enkele maanden voor z’n overlijden in 2021 besloot filmmaker en kunstenaar Ramón Gieling (En un momento dado; Erbarme dich - Matthäus Passion Stories) de uit de gratie gevallen Blanca te filmen. De fotograaf, nog steeds verslaafd aan drank en drugs, strijdt tegen het verval van zijn lichaam en het verstrijken van de tijd; Gieling laat Blanca’s leven en diens fascinatie voor schoonheid en geweld becommentariëren door bewonderaars en verzamelaars als Hans van Manen, Erwin Olaf, Koos Breukel en Blanca’s levensgezellin Marlies Jongsma.

The documentary Paul Blanca, This Film Will Save Your Life by Ramón Gieling made a probing, lightly surreal film portrait of Blanca in the final months of his life. Featuring Hans van Manen, Erwin Olaf, Hans Kemna and Blanca’s life partner Marlies Jongsma, among others.
Born in Amsterdam in 1958, photographer Paul Blanca lived fast and hard; making his breakthrough in the ’80s with tightly framed, provocative photographs and self-portraits.
The aesthetically high-impact footage showed Blanca with a portrait of Mickey Mouse freshly carved into his back, with the head of a rat shoved deep into his throat while the back legs and tail stick out, or as a corpse covered in flies. There were also poignant photographs, such as the portrait of a naked Blanca holding his likewise naked mother in his arms, shortly before her death.
A few months before his death in 2021, filmmaker and artist Ramón Gieling (En un momento dado; Erbarme dich - Matthäus Passion Stories) decided to film the disgraced photographer. Blanca, still addicted to drink and drugs, battles against the dissolution of his body and the passing of time; Gieling gets admirers and collectors such as Hans van Manen, Erwin Olaf, Koos Breukel and Blanca’s life companion Marlies Jongsma to comment on Blanca’s life, and his fascination with beauty and violence.
