I believe that the Flanking Fire Random Event means that you roll IMMEDIATELY for every enemy unit on the Battle Board. You don't "save" it for the next "Friendly Forces" die rolls.

That is correct sir. You immediately resolve it against each enemy, with the friendly action table with the flanking fire did roll modifier. In these early episodes I did get a few things wrong but in general it gives a good idea how the game flows and how to play. These days I've played about 200 days of combat and I know the rules better than my Bible 😁

This is great. I sat down the other day to learn this, and then found this later. It was nice to have a confirming voice that I was doing this correctly. I like what I have seen, but you are right. The rules could be a lot better. I still haven't found in the rules some of the things that you have (like when you haven't spotted a tank or a gun yet, but they have a "default" value before then). Good work. Thanks. I can't wait to be able to play this without so much reading, but I am a long way off from there, and then got distracted by RAF.

Keep in mind that many of the rules are hidden on the playing board, charts and even the AAR.. Weird!

Pretty easy game, once you play it a lot. Rule #1 .. Don't shoot at anything 75L or bigger, unless you're hull down. #2. Use advancing fire, and artillery ALWAYS. #3. Don't get greedy as far as vp for terrain. #4 ... 70% HE, 30% AP, and SAVE your strongest rounds for armor. #5 ... Shoot non-armor first. The tanks or SPG's may get smoked by your allies, or even move off the board.

another good but overlooked solitaire tank game was "Open fire" which was an adaption of victory games "Ambush!" system and did not require so much die rolling and you had far more control of your unit. It really did not transfer over very well from Ambush infantry combat but it was still fun and I was able to buy a mint copy shortly before old games became as collectible as they are now. Pattons best is a good game but i think Western Tank Ace by CG refined the system a bit, it did not replace PB though.

I own it but haven't played it yet. Reading the comments and forum posts on it's bgg page, it seems like it's unplayable as the rules are a downright mess. I think you mean "American Tank Ace" (western front ace is a ww1 dog fighting game by the same designer). I enjoy American Tank Ace a lot, but it has it's own problems and does only scratch the surface of what is Patton's Best detailed simulation. If I got lots of time and energy on my hands, I'll always play Patton's Best. However, American Tank Ace is excellent for those times that I lack either time or energy. Really fun and I am looking forward to the sequals in the series!

Thank you! My experience was similar in the beginning. You feel frustrated just hiding behind smoke and letting your task force do the work. Further on when you get a tank with 76L gun loaded with high velocity armor piercing rounds, things are very different. You can easily kill panzer 4s and Marder. And you can also kill stugs, hetzers and Panthers when they show you their side or even better, rear. So my advice is to stick with it! I hope you enjoy this video. It makes me happy to know that I'm not alone, and it feels like everyone who is watching are part of my friendly task force, liberating Europe!

Hi, Chris! Thank you for your comment. I thoroughly this game, it's really the kind of game that I like. I know it catches a lot of "flak", but I think that is mainly due to the reason that the rules have too many "holes". Once you get over that, it's very enjoyable. There are unofficial expansions, for soviet, german army, german SS and canadian tanks. The soviet expansion was published in battle magazine. The german army and SS are fan made. The Canadian expansion was published in "The General" magazine and another magazine. All of these expansions are available on boardgamegeek website. On another note, a spiritual succesor has been announced and is soon released. check out "American Tank Ace" by designer Gregory Smith, published by "Compass Games".

Nice! Getting your tank knocked out on day 1 certainly spiced it up! I was a week in before it first happened to me by which time I was getting complacent and with a false sense of security. By the way, I think you roll for crew escape whether they are incapacitated or not - and I think the driver was in fact incapacitated from the light wound he took earlier. Then you roll for rescues, then for brew up.

  • @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    Жыл бұрын

Thank you friend! Very good eye, and right you are. The driver was indeed incapacitated from the first hit. I did not roll on the "bail out" for the others since I did not have any negative modifiers, so rolling more than 10 is impossible, but, upon examining the rules it does appear that you should actually roll on the wounds table again! So basically first we're rolling on the wounds table when the tank gets hit (with the hit location table modifiers). Then we roll a second time when the crew men are escaping. It's even possible to roll a third time, for crew rescue! 19.12 If the tank did not explode, roll for each crewman on the Wounds Table to determine if any are wounded, and if so, how seriously. Note that where the enemys hell hit your tank (the hit location) can affect which crewmen are wounded (see the Hit Location Table). 19.13 All surviving crewmen must attempt to bail out (escape) from the tank. Roll for each on the Bail Out Table; then roll again on the Wounds Table for each crewmen who gets out of the tank. Let's call it fog of war ;)

Interesting you loaded HE and only AP in the ready rack. Just at the beginning, thanks for doing this. An “L” encounter mission as I understand would be most likely not other tanks, so AP is less useful. I am guessing further in, which I will watch you may adjust your read rack.

The reasoning for this is that when firing at infantry, there is not a big risk of them firing back at you and killing you. But when firing at tanks, the risk of them firing back is big and you will pay dearly. So I only fire if I think that I can kill them, and rate of fire from using ammo from the ready rack increases the chance of killing them.

The L, M or H resistance does not change the ratio of enemy tanks to show up. Rather it's the type of scenario. Look at counter attack for example, it much more likely to meet tanks, why I would actually both have ammo load and ready rack full AP

Sorry Daniel. If my tank is Hull Down facing straight up the board. Is it a. Hull down to fire from sector labelled 6-8 only or b. Hull Down to fire from sectors labelled, 4-5, 6-8, 9-10. So do I get benefit from fire from one sector or 3 sectors. I looked in the rules and couldn't find it. Thank you.

You get the benfit from hull down from all sectors and ranges (including 1, 2 and 3). You can fire at all sectors, but remember, you can not use the bow MG when hull down. Hull down is very powerful and decreases risk of death by 50%!

Hey Dan, I’m so sorry I think on the Friendly Weapons you have the math backwards. You made it easier to KO the LW. Minus 9 would mean 21 and not 39. Then for the woods minus 2 would be a 1 to 19 to KO, not 42. Doesn’t that make sense, like you took them off the battle field too easily, since they were in woods. It’s like they got scared and ran off.

I think I'm explaining it bad but the modifier is for the dice, not the kill number. So if you have -9 modification and roll 35, it becomes 26. The kill number is 30 so the infantry is dead.I think the reason why artillery easier kills infantry is because artillery in forests causes splinters which is lethal for soft targets.
