In depth analysis - Patton's Best VS American Tank Ace: 1944-1945

Doing an in depth analysis, comparing the old Avalon Hill classic "Patton's Best" to the newly released "American Tank Ace: 1944-1945". Patton's Best, released in 1987, was quite a complex game and not many gamers have had the patience to learn how to play it. American Tank Ace, the spiritual successor, aims to streamline and improve upon the old game. Has it suceeded in what it set out to do? What are the similarities and differences between these two titles? Are there any reason to own both of them? These are some of the questions that I hope to answer in this very in depth analysis. This video is my most ambitious project yet, composed after hundreds of hours of playing these two titles. I really hope that you will like it!

    I enjoyed your comparisons. Some of the things you say makes me laugh. I've played a lot of Patton's Best over the years and even made my own mods. I actually found learning PB to be easy and straight forward. Then I found out that I was playing one of the movement rules incorrectly for 30 years.

    Thank you Kurt (Or kurts owner :D )! LOL, I hope that is a good thing :P Well, you started playing before the age of the internet! I sometimes think about the 80's and 90's how many people would play board games wrong! I played so many board games "correctly", only to find out I actually got some rules wrong when I upload the playthroughs to this channel and my viewers point them out! One big problem with Patton's Best is how the rules are spread out absolutely everywhere. This is a game where you will not learn the rules from just reading the rules. Nope, you've got to read all the charts, carefullly, you got to read the sequence of play on the board, you got to read the AAR, the only thing you don't have to read is the back of the box! I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was a rule there LOL!

    I agree with your comments about enemy reinforcements. In my limited (4) playings so far, I have been quickly overwhelmed by enemy reinforcements much faster than I can take out the initial forces that face me at game start. Sorry, I should have been more specific! I was playing ATA. I've tried playing a bit of PB, but I get tired out from all the lookups before I get too far. :) I bought ATA last week and took it on vacation with me to learn to play. I really enjoyed learning it, but after my first four plays where I quickly was overwhelmed by enemy reinforcements, I put it away and pulled out my ongoing Interceptor Ace game. I was hoping that I was doing something wrong in ATA and maybe it would turn out that the reinforcements were not so overwhelming, but watching your video today, I noticed that you had also experienced something similar. I think I may just create a house rule that reduces the chance of enemy reinforcements. Again, thanks for all your videos. I really enjoy your channel and have watched several of your PB videos.

    Patton's Best was a product of the 1980s. Back then Games were trying to be simulations, something I am glad has changed. Back then we only had the "General" magazine for answering questions. The General was there to put out expansion senecios for their games and to sell more games. The rules for the old games were horrible, try SPIs Air War if you want a head ache. I always did think the multi color tables of the old AH games were a great idea, they made it easier to find the table I needed. But it did come to feel like accounting and not playing a game after awhile. I have played neither game but I was a huge SL, ASL, Panzer Blitz, and I think it was called Panzer Leader. Wow the 1980s were along time ago. So glad I have returned to the hobby. Thank you for doing this. Why no mention of Tiger Leader or Sherman Leader? If anyone takes issue with how you say something F'em. I know that sounds harsh but in my opinion none of us needs that negativity..

    A couple of comments so far: I like the counters as they are (no cost). I look at the charts to determine which skill I want to purchase and can see the cost there without cluttering up the counter. The -1 counters from Ft. Knox are already confusing enough. I have about 120 missions of ATA under my belt and have only seen a Tiger twice, so a lot of it is just how we roll. As you said, you are way more concerned with winning these games than I am. I think these narrative games are much more about the experience than the W/L record. People say there aren’t enough meaningful decisions in these games, I don’t care. They are like interactive historical fiction books to me. Only one decision with those, do you want to read them or not. Agree on the campaigns. I think towns should have been added for more flavor, like in Target for Today and Target for Tonight. Most missions feel to generic for me. Trying to bridge that gap with our group campaign. GREAT JOB so far, looking forward to the final 20 minutes

    I didn't actually notice that the price of the skills were on that chart, then I would agree with you, as long as it's on one of the charts, that is enough. Wow, you are really lucky! Hi Dan, I finally got a chance to see this. I liked aspects of PB, but found others surprising and lacking at least in a phew initial sessions. You touched on burning through the hours of the day and I noticed that, so get it and roger that. I also felt like the Air Support and Artty eliminated most threats and advancing fire, then it was the churn of the dice through tables to get back to some kind of tension. Oh additionally the enemy firing on your support and not you happened frequently. I kept thinking I’m a gonner, nope. Now I had limited sessions, so I am wondering how it will play out next time. Not bad, but didn’t grab me in a way I had to keep going. ATA I have yet to get to the table, so I like all the things you said. I got the rules to it early as you know. But they lacked any art details, no tank board, battle board and so on. I had no idea how these looked or worked. The rules really didn’t say well enough that I could visualize some concept of them. I read through and though ok, but couldn’t do a dry run session, so I didn’t dig in. This was unfortunate and I would have liked to give meaningful feedback, but I couldn’t, it was not complete. Have you thought about asking some of those design questions? For example the small ready rack? And so on. I kinda would like to know as well. Gregg is responsive as you mentioned and others may like to know, please do it on BGG if you don’t mind. That is if you do ask. Thanks again, well wishes

    Hi, JP! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I hope that you will get to ATA soon, it's an awesome game. I thought about contacting the designer of PB, but to be honest, that guy is now old (74), the game was designed 35 years ago so it would be hard for him to answer any questions about why he designed some things in some ways, also, he is kind of a big shot now, he worked for Microsoft and had a big part in some of the most well known PC games that have ever been published. I did contact the designer of ATA and put forward my idea that I would send my manuscript to this video, and he could choose if he wanted to discuss certain points that I brought up, but he decided that he did not want to have a part of that. It was my understanding that he felt that it was inappropriate and unfair to the fans and designer of PB, as if only he would be able to explain his part of the story, that would tip the scale in favor of ATA.

    As my first WW2 solitaire, which would you recommend, ATA or PB? I am familiar with complex rulesets and prefer medium weight or progressive difficulty, but I am just getting into this genre. ATA seems more streamlined while PB might be best to grow into after ATA?

  • @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    If you're planning to perhaps play both, I would definetely recommend starting with ATA as that game is less complex and as you say, more streamlined. However, if you're confident with complex rules and want to play something more detailed, I'd recommend PB. Also remember that the tactical decisions of ATA are rather limited, yes, there are quite a few choices to make which is fun, but the impact of those choices are not so big. You're mostly in for the ride in this one and your fate ultimately depends mainly on the dice.

  • @Stumptonian1
    @Stumptonian1 Жыл бұрын

    Well done, Daniel. A good comparison of the two games. 👍 I grew tired of your Patton's Best playthroughs after about 4 or 5 - way to many details to keep track of. I found out that I have the game but have no idea when I got it. (Might have been given to me by a friend who didn't like it.) Seeing all the modifiers to keep track of puts me off playing unless I take the time to make an interactive Excel workbook that calculates everything automatically. Too many other games I need to get to the table for that to happen. It's a shame that the American Tank Ace rulebook is so poorly laid out - and especially the Sequence of Play on the back cover. It's good that there are corrections on BGG and Facebook, but annoying that you have to print out corrections yourself. Maybe Compass should take a page from Osprey's handling of Undaunted and send us updated versions (once all the errors have been found/fixed). Some of the charts need fixing as well. You mentioned the need for additional counters to track certain things (who's firing at you, buttoned markers etc.) It seems they were short in those areas, but they went overboard in others. Did we really need so many copies of each vehicle, especially where the slight difference in stats rarely come into play? and all those multiple copies of various war trophies (which get lost when your tank is destroyed) ... I do think there should have been some rudimentary spotting required for the player, kind of like the Germans have to roll a 1 to start firing at you, rather than being automatic, but not as extensive as Patton's Best. As you mentioned, there definitely needs to be some negative effects to retreating from the field. I think Mr. Smith is already working on that. I am looking forward to the other nationalities of American Tank Ace in the works. My bank account (and my wife!) might disagree ....😏

  • @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    Yeah PB is certainly not for everyone. A lot of bookkeeping! It will make you feel like an accountant :P haha that's pretty funny! Are the counters still on their sheets or is it a used copy? That is a great idea, let's hope someone does something like that :D Yeah, the rulebook is one of the games weak points. Let's hope it gets redone so new players will have an easier time joining us! This is also the feeling I got. I am not sure why we need so many war trophy counters and infantry counters :P It would have been better to make fewer of those and make a few more "buttoned up" and "targeted" counters etc. Yes! Ironically the new errata was released yesterday just a few minutes before this video was published. New errata includes that retreating will give no XP and will give a negative die roll modifier for next promotion attempt! Same here! Especially German tank ace. It would be fun to actually not have to be constantly out gunned. I am guessing we will instead be zerged by Shermans or T-34's!

But you are definitely right that in practice, it is extremely cumbersome. One of my issues with most boardgames is "perfect knowledge." Something that they still have not completely solved, but to me it adds to the fun. I think that in the near future some of these challenges will be solved with an app the does the math and calculations. The other element you touch on is another aspect of the future, the use of the human element in these games to tell a story. Thanks as always, for your devotion to games and to your viewers. @@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel At one point shortly after I picked up Patton's Best, I think in early 88, I decided to combine the 1/35 top down drawings in Honnecutt's "Patton" book along with what I knew from training on M48A1, M48A2, M48A5, M60, and M60A3 tanks into a revision that would also include the M26, M46, and M47. I got about 1/3 of the way into transcribing portions of the rules booklet, found that 80% needed a complete rewrite to deal with the increased lethality and engagement ranges, and put it aside. Oddly, with those increased lethality and engagement ranges, it can simplify the gameplay a fair amount. I still think that a game called "Patton: Best of the Breed" covering that would be entertaining. Maybe I'll resume it now that I've long retired from active tanking. @@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel The biggest turn-off was the board with the uniform and slots for medals and trophies. I know you said you liked that quite a bit but I'm just not interested. Also after PB gritiness, the combat looked too lightweight for me, I quite like all the charts and tables (yes, I know I'm weird!). Beyond that, any second thoughts were dashed when all the errata came to light.

    Great review Sir. Thx for posting. We (here collectively) all have to remember that at least for color / art capabilities for map and counters etc are limited by what could be economically printed at time. aka this case Circa 1987. Especially the charts. That's just way charts were back then. No semi-glossy paper. These charts really shouldn't have attempted the multi-colors tho Esp the read looks unreadable. This is in comparison to say original SL / 3rd Reich etc charts that were black on white using color like to alternate lines of the CRC table between white and light gray for readability.

    Patton's Best felt very mechanical and just a dice-rolling endurance test. ATA involves a lot of dice rolling but I feel like you do more decision-making. However as you note, the ATA rule book is a bit of a train wreck. It does help that the author is online but the fact that there's already 3 or 4 different errata sheets for a brand new game, and the number of questions on BGG, speaks to a rule book that was not very well organized and written. It's a great game once you get all the errata and rules clarifications figured out.

    Agreed on the dice rolling endurance test on PB, you really got to love charts to like that game. The amount of rolling that you do before you see your first combat is pretty nuts! However, once in combat, I do think it changes to a deeply tactical game, in difference to ATA where I don't feel like we have much decision making beyond the quite obvious ones. I do think PB's 30 different orders, 5 orders a turn vs ATA's 15 different orders, 2 orders a turn is a testament to that. I don't think the 3-4 pages of errata is a very big deal. A big part of the errata is correcting spelling errors and such, so it's not like 4 pages of errata in that sense. I am happy as long as the designer provides support, but I definitely to the fact that the rules need some work with better organizing and clarifications!

    I am highly offended by every opinion, because it's not my opinion!! Just Kidding!! I'm preparing you for the onslaught you're going to face because for whatever minor reason! 🫣 I'll say that this video made me lean more heavily on deciding that ATA might be the next game I buy VS Patton's Best. PB looks amazing, but you said it best. Time investment (and space) are a MAJOR factor in many gamer's lives. For example, The Hunters is easy to setup, play and breakdown without devoting a ton of time into it and I get a good feeling that I accomplished something incredible! Also, the time investment required for a full campaign, I can't believe how long it is for PB!! Now I know why you are so protective of your Commander!! 🤣🤣🤣 Great video! I'm sure it will help a lot of people out!

Doesn't matter if you praise the game and note that it has some small problems :P Yeah, I can see why! I think you could probably play ATA in your truck! It doesn't really require more space than The Hunters for example. Oh yeah, I don't know how many hours I spent on my KZread campaign! And that is just one of many campaigns, mind you... I think you are incorrect when placing how important it is to capture an "Exit Area." Capturing an Exit Area only helps you achieve victory i that it is worth a decent amount of Victory Points. Victory is determined each day simply by whether or not you have more points at the end of the day than the enemy. As far as deliberate dragging your feet when moving across the map, I'll bet that more than a few tank commanders did just that, since they wanted to stay alive, which is the ultimate Victory Condition in the game. The flip side of the coin is that in order to get promoted/medals, you have to have a LOT of Victory Points at the end of a day's combat. Patton's Best remains one of my all-time favorites, and I find American Tank Ace to be TOO streamlined.

  • @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    @WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel

    I think you have misunderstood what I meant. It's not the goal of the game to capture any exit area at all, one could just check every possible adjacent area, call in 2 air strikes and 3 artillery strikes, request ammo after every advancing fire and you would likely end every mission after just 2-3 areas. What I'm saying is that it would make more sense to me if the exit area was the objective of each missions, instead of just a positive score. Regarding the dragging of feet, I don't think that was something that really happened in WW2. I've read every US tank crewman memoir there is, many written by tank commanders. There were orders given throughout the movement and battles to the platoon leader via 2-way radio. Draging your feet wasn't an option since you had clear orders of your objectives and if you were found to deliberately delay an advance or attack, you would be relieved of command pretty soon.

    @@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel Making capture of at least 1 Exit Area during an Advance scenario would be a good idea. What you describe as dragging your feet (recon lots of adjacent areas, call in multiple strikes for every area, etc) isn't what i had in mind when I thought of dragging your feet. You'd deserve to get busted from command for that. 🤣 My idea of dragging is simply calling in an Artillery mission for the area you're going to move into, eve4ry time. Only costs 15 minutes, and greatly helps you thin out enemies. Maybe more "cautious advance" than being a deliberate Goldbrick.

I didn't much like the game though - if your boats get shot up then there will be little point landing whoever is left as they won't achieve much. Probably historically accurate though and the best theme of any game!
