The train departure scene will never fail to make me tear up. So gorgeous.
I was in a Japanese themed bar in New Orleans on vacation & Umbrellas Of Cherbourg was being projected onto the wall as wallpaper so I can confirm that the hipster paradigm is real :D 0:39
Catherine Deneuve's mother in the movie says she's not much to look at as well, peak comedy.
It’s not just Deneuve who is beautiful, so is Nino Castelnuovo, Anne Vernon and Marc Michel, they’re all exceptionally attractive, and with the art direction and sumptuous photography it’s like a fairy tale. What no one ever seems to talk about is that no one in the film actually sings their own part. That’s one helluva decision to make in a film where every single word is sung, but the dubbing and voice matching are perfect, adding to the other worldliness of the movie.

Ellen Farner, who played Madeleine, is gorgeous as well. But I saw this with an ex-girlfriend who said that if you're a woman, it's a good idea not to be in a movie with a 19-20 year old Catherine Deneuve.

You bring up an interesting point about the dubbing adds a sense of otherworldliness to the film - I really need to rewatch this now to see if I spot it more!

I was gonna say this guy sounds like that mouse in that cooking movie.
When I was in junior high back in 2002, the first girl I dated passed away from a car accident, so when I watched the departure scene for the first time I actually ugly cried. Even now when I hear it I just turn from the screen and aggressively fight back tears. Beautifully difficult to hear, right next to the theme for “Schindler’s List”.
I could spend the rest of my life watching Patton Oswalt talk about movies
Holy crap! Had no idea Patton was such an "old film" nerd.(thought it was just comic books and scifi). Sure hit the nail on the head with this one. This movie looks like a candy store and Deneuve is almost robotic perfection in every frame.

@@krigsfulit’s a great read. i came across it when i thought it was odd patton oswald was cast for mst3k because i didn’t know he was a movie guy. now i know he’s the equivelant of that guy you meet in college who you never really hear talk about sports and when he opens his mouth on the topic he says some of the most lucid, accurate things you’ve heard but not thought.
Y’all just uploaded 3 vids of Patton Oswalt introductions back to back. Please tell me he’s getting a Closet Picks vid.
Well I never expected Patton Oswalt to be a fan of this film. Btw I love it. This and the Young Girls of Rochefort are great.
I wish I had appreciated this film 10 years ago as much as I do now. I am so happy that I now own it, and I am forever grateful that Criterion did a fantastic job restoring this film. My goodness, what a film!!
i saw this film at an arthouse theater a few years ago 15 minutes from where i live and man, what a film.
She's angelic really, otherworldly in her beauty🌷
Using this as my introduction right before I watch Umbrellas of Cherbourg for the first time

We love the same film!!! J'aime beaucoup le film! ❤️
Not many folks remember the true tenor of the early 60s distinct from the 50s. It all happened so quickly. It was a bit world weary highly educated and literate. A funny mix of the new promise of the Space Age but keenly awear of the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie. Then there was the Jet Set replete with artists composers film directors and well heeled refugees from the ruins of European Aristocracy all understanding that Jazz was where it's really at. And perhaps Western Civilization was at it's Apex headed for a slow decline .
Great film!!
Great taste in movies he has.
He is so intelligent.
This movie is a sweet treat for the eyes (Catherine Deneuve) and ears (Legrand). Yum Yum YUM
