This was a dream match between two vocal beasts. Patti actually was supposed to do the song with James Ingram. He couldn't clear his schedule, so she asked for Michael which was a match made in heaven. Michael McDonald is one of the most soulful male vocalists in recording history........one of my favs. And Patti is my baby........lol. Nice video as usual MAJ.

Michael McDonald has done a lot of background and duo work with several artists worth checking out: Ever Changing Times by Aretha Franklin and Michael McDonald, Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross with MM on background vocals, This Is It by Kenny Logging with MM on background vocals, Yah Mo Be There by James Ingram and MM and we can't forget his work with the Doobie Brothers; What A Fool Believes, It Keeps You Running and Minute by Minute!

Yes, they were not in the studio together when this song was recorded or the video was shot. He was in California and she was in New York, Which is the reason for the split effect. And it does represent a break up. Patti labelle and Michael McDonald would not actually meet for the first time in person until they appeared on soul train. Patti recorded the song first as a solo project but was dissatisfied with it and threw the song away, but kept it in her mind and heart because she knew that it could be better. And decided that it would sound better as a duet. And when burt Bacharach and carrol Bayer Sager asked patti who she wanted to do the duet with. Her first choice was Michael McDonald. And they called him and he agreed, they recorded it and now you're listening to history. Burt Bacharach and Carrol Bayer Sager wrote and produced the song. So now you know from. Someone who has been following Patti labelle since I was 15 or 16 and now I'm 50. So I know. And Michael McDonald's music history began with the Doobie Brothers before going solo.

Wow you really went back! I was like 8 or 9 I think when I first heard this, never understood the lyrics but man these songs is what made me fall in love with love songs. The mood & vibes made me feel this song at 8years old not knowing anything about music or these lyrics. When I heard it when I got older I was like whoa! Yes accurate- I understand why I felt that song. 🥲🔥🌹🌹🙌

She just talked about this on drink champs, she was suppose to do this by herself and she did not like it because they kept making her sing the word on over and over again and she threw the lyrics away and then they say what if we make it into a duet? And she said yes, I love this song

Most white male vocalists from the '70s were soooo soulful and smooth, because the lines between rock and soul was so blurred. They were heavily influenced by the amazing soul singers that preceeded them, like everything Mowrown! ❤🎼

Michael started out singing back up for Steely Dan. Then the lead singer of The Doobie Brothers got sick( Tom Johnston) and they ask Michael in 1976 to become their lead singer. The rest is History. Check out Minute By Minute, When A Fool Believes, Real Love, When A Fool Believes, Taking It To The Streets, It Keeps You Running. He did a song on his own called I Keep Forgetting, and in the 90's a Rap group did a version of this. It's Fire!✌️

The reason he thought Michaels's voice would be thinner is he associated race with voice texture, colour, and tone. He took a first look at Michael, as a white man, singing with a black woman there would be two different tones and distinctions based on race. It wasn't until Michael started to sing his assumptions about a white man were proven wrong. The thing is he didn't want to say it in so many words. But it was obvious in his approach to the song.

You need to listen more Michael McDonald. It's just a video which is filmed any artistic way to fit the music. Hard to describe Michael's voice. It's just soulful. Gospel and blues influenced. Not hard for those of us who grew up hearing so much great pop, rock, r&b, funk, country, gospel and jazz artists on the radio in the 70s & 80s.
