Patterned Segmented Bowl

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here it is the end of April and this is the first bowl I made this year. This bowl is my first bowl with a inlayed pattern look. It is mostly made from rings and parts left over from learning to make segmented bowls.

    Beautiful video, Cip. The dish looks beautiful, stripe pattern, the segment with the bright times another form of a bowl-pattern. But I think normally, the preparations (sawing, grinding) at a segment-bowl on staying the longest.

    Really enjoyed your video, it was very honest! Some others give the impression that nothing ever goes wrong and we all know that things go wrong all the time. I was wondering about your base, it was quite thick and it is going to expand more across the grain than with the grain. Could that cause cracking?

  • @CipsWoodChips

    @CipsWoodChips

    6 жыл бұрын

    Howdy Kevin! I like your comments. I made the bowl in 2015. I no longer have the bowl. Bowls do crack. Maybe I am lucky but I have not had one crack. The base layer was cherry and well seasoned. I usually finish with sanding sealer and polyurethane. Once cured the wood is very stable. Thank you for your question. Cheers

    Cip, Nicely done. I like this pattern. Wondering what speed your lathe runs at for ost of this turning.

  • @CipsWoodChips

    @CipsWoodChips

    4 жыл бұрын

    Howdy Charlie! I usually display or call-out the speed. I usually turn much slower than other turners. I base my speed on the diameter of the bowl. I seldom turn faster than 1,000 RPM. This bowl, once it was balanced, I probably turner at 650 to 850 RPM. Thanks for the question. Cheers.

    One more question, Cip, when measuring your segments what do you use for the long point? Do you measure the segment only or add the spacer as part of the long point measurement dimension? Hope that was clear.

  • @CipsWoodChips

    @CipsWoodChips

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hello Charlie! Yes, I think the length of the long side of a wedge of the patterned ring needs to be the combined length of the segment and one divider. I usually "play it safe" by making thinks slightly larger." Cheers.

    Cip, I have learned so much by watching this video. I am in the process of making a few of these bowls myself. I have a couple questions. What is the height and circumference of the finished bowls. Also, do you ever have a problem with vibration as the bowl gets smaller? As I get near the widest part of the opening it just screams at me. Any suggestions. What finish did you use on your bowl? Thanks for your fine work. Turning is a lot of fun for me but very addictive. lol Charlie

    Greeting Charlie! I think I still have the bowl but I can not find it. I think it was about 5 inches in diameter and maybe 3.5 inches tall. Sometimes I do have problems with vibration. The first thing I try is sharpening my tool or change to a different type of tool. Next, I try spinning slightly faster and using a lighter touch of the tool. Always be safe, make sure everything is tightened properly. For a finish I like rub-on wipe-on polyurethane. Cheers
