Patrick Rothfuss discusses The Name of the Wind

Ойын-сауық

Patrick Rothfuss discusses why he wrote The Name of the Wind, his first book in the Kingkiller trilogy, the writing process and his inspiration.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
'I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
My name is Kvothe.
You may have heard of me'
So begins the tale of Kvothe - currently known as Kote, the unassuming innkeepter - from his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, through his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic. In these pages you will come to know Kvothe the notorious magician, the accomplished thief, the masterful musician, the dragon-slayer, the legend-hunter, the lover, the thief and the infamous assassin.
The Name of the Wind is fantasy at its very best, and an astounding must-read title.

I reread it 6 times now, and each time I see something different. Did you know that Kvothe is Calling the Name of the Wind several times throughout the book? Nearly every persuasive conversation he has, he is actually calling the wind on accident. He is also doing it to the reader. It gets pretty deep with several rereads.

I read the last 200 pages of Wise Man's Fear as slowly as I could tolerate because I didn't want it to end. What I'd recommend with these books is to get comfortable enjoying the journey and don't worry so much about the destination. They are the best books I've read in years.

If anyone wants to know another series written this well with deep character work you might try the Patrick O'Brian canon of the tale of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, a phenomenal buddy story ranging 20 books. "Master and Commander" is first in the series. You may have seen the movie. Depth, excellent writing, the kind of books where you live with the characters, humor, and written by a deep and erudite mind like our Rothfuss.

Many people criticise this series for being rambling and devoid of action, and it is, but is that really a bad thing. So many books are so plot oriented that they fail to capture the realistic aspects of life. Life doesnt have a plot. Life doesnt have constant action. Life is just a series of events that occasionally lead toward a bigger picture. This book is about a man's life. It is beautifully written and the things that happen will surprise and delight you, however, since it is about a man's life they will not seem to lead towards a common conclusion nor will they follow an obvious plot. However if you look closely you can see that everything in the book is there for a reason, and if you look closely you can see how each event leads him closer to dena and the chandrian. Let me ask, would you rather take a road trip where you simply stay in the car for hours and arrive somewhere to only realize your back where you started and accomplished nothing, or a trip where you take many stops along the way, see sights that amaze you and make you rethink your way of life, and arrive home enriched by what you saw. If you would prefer the latter you would enjoy this book. And if you would prefer the former, dont waste youre time there are manny other books you could be doing that with.

I think the biggest problem with this series is, that it "promises" an entirely different story than it actually tells. If you have a look at the short description on the back cover, it talks about how this is the live story of an awesome wizard, warrior and artist, who did all kinds of epic things. The book even starts with the protagonist killing some demons, before starting his story with his infamous "I'm did so many awesome things" speech. So I think it's fair to assume, that you are about to read an epic, heroic fantasy story. But then it turns out, that 80% of this story is about life at the university and the epic fantasy plot is pretty much buried under mundane activities (I wouldn't be surprised, if the words "Rhetoric and Logic" were used more often in these books, then the word "Chandrian"). Having a more "realistic" fantasy life story is not bad in of itself. However, if you don't want to read a story, you still won't like it. When I bought The Name of the Wind, I had a certain expectation as to what it might be and what I actually got was pretty different. I still ended up liking the story it told (at least for the most part), but I can easily imagine a person buying this book with certain expectations and being extremely disappointed to find out, that it's actually an entirely differnt genre than the cover would suggest. I mean: Within the story itself, there is a moment where the Chronicler is extremely disppointed to find out, that a story he heard about Kvothe was actually way less epic in reality. If even the characters in the book are disappointed by finding out that this epic story is actually way more boring in reality, how can you blame the reader for it? ;)

I would happily wait 4 more years for 'A Wise Man's Fear' , if it meant Pat's revisions were to be finalized to his complete liking and approval. I haven't enjoyed reading a book so much as I did when reading 'The Name of the Wind', and sure, everybody gets mad at me when I tell them the next one isn't coming out until next year, but it's the LEAST I can do to explain to them that had Rothfuss rushed his first book, then it would of (possibly) been just that less of an amazing story.

There’s something early he says about spending 7 year writing “the book” and how it’s been smoothed to glass w revisions. Now that it’s 2022 I’m wondering if the editing that’s taken place that’s destroyed his perfect glass polished “book 3” in all honesty I wish he would release he original pitch book online

It took me a LONG time to get into this book because of the rambling roundabout style he used. After 8 or 9 tries I finally settled into it and now I'm onto the second book... I'm really digging it now. I'm so impressed by the time he took to craft a character... There isn't much "action" in the first two books...but the story is interesting. Still not as gritty as Abercrombie or as entertaining as Martin but a good read so far.

The reader of any book has the ability and right to read it however we like. If you prefer one pronunciation over another you should just continue to use it without guilt :) The book wouldn't be as good if we couldn't put our own perspectives and imaginations to use on it.
