He started in movies as a singer making many many musical films between 1949 and 1955. When the studios stopped making musical films he had to rely solely on his acting abilities to get film work like Day of the Trifids.

She has no excuse for not knowing, even if there was no Internet. Before Internet, I knew the names and year of release of all Howard Keel's films by simply going to my local library. In fact it was at my local library that I educated myself on biographies of many film stars.

Betty Hutton was very damning of him of how he treated her during AGYG. He really resented her for doing Garland's role. what was she going to do say no?

Plus the fact that Betty Hutton was an outsider, meaning Paramount was loaning her to MGM for Annie Get Your Gun. MGM could not find anyone suitable for the role amongst its own contract players. Everyone else on Annie Get Your Gun was an MGM contract player including the crew..MGM was one big happy family and they did not take kindly to outsiders.

Howard Keel might have been a gentleman and a real nice guy but he made a real bad mistake as the story goes , he was watching the premier of "Serenade" theater version and not knowing the star of the picture Mario Lanza was sitting directly behind him ,Keel remarked to his quest sitting next to him saying " Only a Mad-Man can sing like that" Mario was infuriated and leaned over Keels seat and said in that perfectly clear voice of his" That's right Howard why don't you fuck up and let loose , it might make you a better singer".

This story if even true had to be misunderstood. I heard another version were he said this during a Lanza recording session were Keel was in the recording booth as a guest. Lanza & Keel were very good friends. Lanza and Keel were both famous for enjoying practical jokes salty talk and ribbing there friends. If true it was Keel , teasing his extremely gifted friend he admired. If he didn't admire Lanza, why would he be there in the first place. Ian Kaye
