That's not how it works. Everyman and his dog can be fit/strong. Parks up & down the world are filled with physically fit young men playing amateur football. Football is about spacial-awareness/vision/touch. Paul Scholes (for example) is an asthmatic, but, his vision was beyond...And size is important. Evra himself was told he was (traditionally) too small. Traditionally, smaller players are best suited to a no.10 role (sat behind the main striker) or attacking central midfielder/midfielder. Think Messi/Rooney/Scholes/ Iniesta/Xavi/Pirlo. But these guys are still the exception to the rule. Most players range between 5ft 10" & 6ft 4". Obviously certain positions have traditional heights, like, keeper or central defender; who all tend to be 6ft 2" plus.

G Art that’s a fair point. It wouldn’t have been enough and you’re right that skill and vision are more important. But I could see him as a Kante type defensive midfielder, or maybe even a Roberto Carlos style left back. He’s an incredible athlete, and was almost ambidextrous so clearly had skill too. But he was always much too small for basketball or American Football which were the two sports in which he excelled.

Daniel Goodall Even not. You americans tend to overestimate the impact of genetics in soccer because genetics are much more important in basketball / US football. Plenty of very athletic players don’t stand out even at the grassroots level of soccer.
