Agreed. The majority of PoE content creators ignore new players unfamiliar with the game specific terms so that adds an extra layer of frustration for people who go to guides such as league starters and are overwhelmed with what is essentially foreign verbal diarrhea to anyone but experienced PoE players.

Don’t we all have to begin somewhere. I’m so sorry to all the “OG POE” players, that I found this game recently. Why not embrace the new people and enlighten them with your expertise! Being in some sort of condescending mindset is not a positive way to be. We all enjoy the same thing, playing a “game”. If us newbies should kneel at your 10 year plus experience altar on this game..maybe just realize we are enjoying the same thing.

I'm happy that Raxx has come over to play PoE. We need someone like him to facilitate a bridge for new players into the game. PoE is glorious for its complexity but that complexity is seen as "complicated" until you learn how the game works. Raxx's approach to educating will enable new players to check out PoE and stay to play rather than be intimidated and leave.

As a poe player i can say, this is a great guide. Just one thing: in the lab trial (your class ascension thingy), click the altar in the last room in the north-west corner. that's what's actually giving you the special class points. i just left without doing that on my first character and was really confused...and then had to do the lab again and also (this is only relevant for a small amount of people): if you are someone who really likes to learn and tackle challenges, maybe NOT following a guide could actually be way more fun for you. i tried to get into this game like 4 times while following a guide and always was really bored and quit in like act 2/3. doing it my own way and making my own trash build, that couldn't get past white maps, was actually more fun and made the game click for me. but again, this is probably not the case for most people

Agree with some people trying to make their own character first. Especially if you have a bit of experience with other ARPGs. This is what I did too…the character ended up pretty bad but I still made it to the red (hardest) maps before giving up. I’m now following a guide for my 2nd character, but just doing it myself the first time was enough to get me excited about the game.

Yeah, I've never just taken someone else's build and followed it. I'll take tips and pointers I pick up on reddit or from watching a few streamers, but I never log in day one and say, "tell me how to play". It's play. I'll figure things out. The constant refrain of "you must follow a guide" can be just as much of a turn off. I wish more people would caveat "follow a guide" with "but any broken build can finish the campaign".

First time I started out with my own build (dual strike raider, very spicy) and made it to act 6 before quitting, it did great up until act 5 but then I constantly kept dying to one-shots. I tried another character and that one somehow did worse, constantly kept dying in act3-4. I decided, screw it, let's go hardcore and really try to make careful decisions. I made it to act 8 doedre on first try, did not know about the wheel mechanic and was slowed down by probably max amount of temp stacks. Several hardcore characters and years later I've finally learned how to make good builds and that experience has definitely been slow and painful, but so damn rewarding!

Honestly, this guide has really helped me a lot. I just hit Act 6 and am dying instantly, now I know why due to the resistances. It also showed me that the character I created was in the standard league, not in the affliction league, so everything I have done was for nought, but that is okay, it has given me a great base knowledge to push forward with it. I would love a little more in depth, at some point, on trading and maxing currencies, but you have provided an AMAZING start to the process. I have watched your content for a long time now, from D3 through where we are in D4 and now with POE. God tier content, my friend. Your passion and care for the community and making the game better for everyone, and way less confusing, is a godsend to many players that would otherwise give up. Being in Standard is fine. The only real difference is the trade economy. Standard has a lot of gazillionaires who already own everything, so the prices for items are weird. If you join the league (Affliciton right now) the price of an item is close to the item's rarity. If you're playing SSF (so you can't trade) then it doesn't really matter.

Awesome guide and I appreciate you taking the time to make it. Personally, I'd rather watch one 1-hour long guide video than 10+ 5min videos bouncing from person to person who might have different advice or guides to choose from. I think you did a good job of eliminating the "99%" for new players and explaining the main things. Maybe you could make a series of guides based on that idea of what % of the game you're diving into and what type of player might benefit from what % of the game being explained. Overall great stuff-thanks a lot!

This guide is amazing. Great work Raxx. This definitely helps bridge the gap between absolute newbie and the other PoE content that already exists. I spent about 50 hours watching other PoE videos (many that said they were for beginners) before trying PoE, and I think you hit more of what I actually needed in this one hour than I got in all that. I am sure a lot of what I learned in those other videos will eventually be helpful, but its not what I needed in my first hours of playtime. This perfectly hits that mark. So glad you included the "how to get wisdom scrolls". That seems like one of the holes in a lot of the other guides, I think so many of those are assuming you are speedrunning the campaign so the need for the scrolls is so much lower. Also for any newbies out there, you can also trade in Portal Scrolls for Wisdom scrolls. I find this really helpful as with the logout trick, you really only need to keep like 10 portal scrolls to be good, so you can trade in extras you get for more Wisdoms. Also, you just saved my butt on the red maps. I just got to tier 10 maps at the end of my run last night, so would be going into red maps soon. I had NO IDEA about the needing to upgrade the maps to get credit. Luckily, I had been Alch'ing my maps already just to get better loot, but I had no idea I needed to do that. And I would not have even considered using a vaal orb on the map had you not mentioned it. As for ideas for other newbie content, one thing that seemed kind of fuzzy when I started is just what is going on with all the currency. You mentioned currency a few times, and did clarify that Chaos and Divines are the most important currency. A 5-10 minute "Dude, where's my gold?" video would probably help some folks. Just a quick explainer that PoE doesn't use gold like you might expect coming from a Diablo game, and instead has a ton of different items that each have their own little power that changes items when you spend it. Then explain how this ensures that your currency actually remains valuable compared to what you generally experience in a Diablo game where gold matters for a short while and then is just ridiculously abundant, PoE currency is always making your character better. Then maybe a quick show of the "currency vendor" that you can use to upgrade your currency, mentioning that its not always as good of a rate you might get actually trading it to another player, but when you need a specific thing in a pinch like more fusings you can get them this way.

I rarely write comments but I must say I can not wait for the continuation of guides for PoE beginners on this channel. The problem with guides for PoE in general is that they are made by ppl who play this game 10h/day for the last 10 years. Even thou I have no doubt in their good intentions, they are so advanced players that they can not look at the game from beginners eyes. Their "first video for beginners" is more like "7th video for beginners" 😄😄 For example, I watched a lot of videos and I am not a total beginner but I never saw the thing about what rarity the map needs to be to count for completion. They just say "then you check the price and put item on sale" but do not go into details on how to do that. And so on, and so on,... This video makes me want to play the game again. Great work! Keep doing it!

This was a HUGE help to me. I jumped into POE 4-5 years ago and then completely stopped after finishing the Campaign. I completely guessed my way through the build and though I died a LOT I was able to build something OK.... The concept of a build guide never crossed my mind. After playing D4 and getting bored of it pretty quickly I noticed all the talk of POE and II coming out soon and decided to jump back in it again. Been having fun but decided to look more into it and you have been a HUGE help with redirecting my efforts and playing smarter. Thanks!

Helpful video for sure, think I'll give POE another shot now that I have a better understanding of some of the systems, etc. (thank you for that!) As far as some specific feedback: - Would have liked an explanation of what the SSF and Ruthless modes are - Side-note: As far as Ruthless, I gave it a shot as a newer player cuz I heard it was a better experience as a new player, and I actually thought it was more enjoyable (At least for the portion of campaign I got through) - Not sure if you said this and I missed it, or if its so intuitive it wasn't worth mentioning, but a short explanation about how you obtain maps would be nice - One of the biggest turn-offs is the fact that re-specing when you mess up your passive tree or want to try another build seem impossible as a new player, would be nice to get your perspective on that, and know if there is a way to do it without just re-rolling a new character - Your explanation about Trials of Ascendancy was super helpful; something I never fully understood until you broke it down - The flow of this guide was great, especially the callbacks to the points you made earlier on, later in the video

Hey Rax, not a beginner here but like this beginner guide you've made. Many other guides that i've seen over the years run into the issue of getting way to specific, using poe terms and being way to long. I think you've covered very nicely a beginning point into the game, further information can then be searched if the person enjoys the game. Especially love the stash tab recomendation. Many recomendations i hear are way to expansive. In my opinion you can play (alch and go) pretty comfortably with the tabs youve mentioned. Hope to see more PoE content from you, always love to hear input from people newer to the game.

A lot, if not most, PoE content creators contribute to the "barrier to entry" for PoE, whether they realize it or not with their jargon laden "guides". I'm happy that Raxx is a PoE player now and I hope he'll bring new blood into the playerbase. PoE is a great game and it's a shame that so many people are intimidated by the complexity of the mechanics with scant few people to provide guidance. Raxx is going to be pivotal, I think, to PoE's continued growth. I hope he inspires others to be more beginner friendly with their content offerings.

@@ambrosewetherbee8301 it confuses me because you frame it as a problem. If you want to make a build for vets that's completely fine. the overwhelming majority of poe content creators are very clear with the budget and complexity of their builds. the only two notable exceptions being "fastaf" and "poebuilds" which are both horrible. besides that: " back in the day" we also had excellent guides like enkis arc witch. If you want to find excellent build guides not made by the big three you don't really have to look hard there's plenty.

This is honestly the first PoE "beginner" guide that actually feels like a beginner guide for me. Ive learned so much from this video. I know you were a bit concerned about the length of the video but I really thought it was very well paced. Very well paced and easily digestible. I kid you not, I have watched beginner videos of PoE for years and they always lose me at some point because, understandably, some of these folks making these beginner videos have been playing the game since it launched / or many years. Which means their "basics" and my basics, due to the scale of the game, are worlds apart. When I heard you on stream ~2 weeks ago that you were going to make a beginner guide, I was so encouraged and hopeful that it would be the high quality beginner guide I hoped it would be ... and this is exactly what it is and what I needed. Please please keep going and make a beginner series. No rush. Thank you !!

Solid Vid. Very nice tips and indeed beginner friendly. I would not recommend rolling magma to start with (personal preference). Use the Holy flame totem with Flame Wall and you are set until lvl 35ish. Meanhwile you can collect the gems and gear for whatever you want to play. Start leveling them and using them next to the totem. Just a minor downfall in your vid. Trading in poe is probably the most useless system ever. You say they are going to contact you as a buyer but that is a rare occasion as usually you get no reaction whatsoever. So if you want to buy a specific item just spam the sellers and hope someone responds. The trade system on poe is prob one of the most useless systems and should be converted to a auction house type of system where you can buy instantly and it also deletes the scammers you talk about because in an auction house if you list it to low...........its gone.
