Patapon Retrospective

I scoured through the internet archive and found some of the animations you mentioned as lost. I've compiled everything I could find here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n3WDtqOpgbvQYpc.html

Relevant, "Ratatan" was announced recently. I'll be looking forward to that.
I've always loved their use of the self fulfilling prophecy motif with zigotons. Their prophecy says patapons will cause destruction when they reach earthend, and so they try to stop them, which causes patapons to cause the destruction. Had they not tried to stop them, patapons wouldn't cause any destruction to zigotons. I think that's quite neat :>

I'm having problems with lag on my PS4 controller, how did you get it to Work?
Patapon 2 and the Loco Rocos were a huge part of my childhood. Both beautiful games with fun mechanics and great music. But while I’ve beaten loco roco a hundred times. I haven’t gotten to the end of patapon 2 once, and I’ve tried many times. That’s game steps up
Patapon was the best way to incorporate music into rpgs of its time . 3 was fun as hell .
I've played and been a Patapon Fan ever since i was 7, but growing up in a poor family i could never afford to play these games as a child, so i would stick to what little gameplay there was on youtube to watch, sometimes just putting videos and re-watching them so much to the point of me memorizing what actions the person took and pretend to play the game myself! All i had access too were those flash games you'd find on websites where after defeating the 3rd level, you'd unlock a wallpaper creator, and that was the most fun i'd had! Even without having access to the game, i learned everything about it, strategies, bosses, music, characters, lore etc. And it always was devastating to not be able to share or talk about this game with people my age because of most of them being into more serious or edgy games, so they would instantly say "That's a dumb game" or "Un-fun 2D Game." Years later, when i learned that i could emulate the psp on mobile and on computer, i was in awe, and lost my mind about finally being able to play the game i had followed for so many years. The hours i've spent in Patapon 2 & 3 are insane, over 1000 hours on my current P3 Gamefile and well over 3k on my Patapon 2 game, i sincerely hold this franchise close to my heart and always will, and i'm glad to have seen someone make such a well edited and dedicated video about this awesome title. And i'm glad to see some more people become interested in the game as time goes by (And i did just like you said in the video, i too recommend people trying the 2nd game to get them into the game back in the day lol). I will never NOT stop saying this is the best game of all time. A Patapon Fan for life!

Dude I had a similar experience with PaRappa! Easily one of my favorite game series ever, such a huge impact on my life. I used to watch the gameplay videos over and over and over, and sometimes I would boot up KZread on my PS3 and use a dead controller and just match the buttons and pretend like I was playing lol. My cousin got me a PlayStation 4 for my birthday one year and I immediately bought, downloaded, and beat PaRappa 1 and later 2, so amazing to finally play it

Thank god for emulation. I've been playing single player for the entire Patapon 3 back then bc I didn't know how multiplayer works (I was 11). Then after replaying 2 and 3 on emulator revived my love for the franchise. I was surprised that there's still an active community, and I have made great memories playing multi w peeps in discord. God bless that Depths of Infinity mod, it actually gave me incentive to continue on the dlc quests, and I've beaten some of em w/ just me and a friend. It was the most fun I ever had during the pandemic. Oh ye I've watched this entire thing in one sitting. I'm just glad that this game is not forgotten even after a decade of its release.

I still own all 3 of my copies of the games, the same ones I bought when I was younger. Patapon is one of my favorite games of all time, sad to see we'll most likely never get a 4th game. You also forgot a Patapon easter egg in Playstation All-Stars. When using Big Daddy's level 3 attack on the God of War Stage, he will cause the whole stage to become underwater. If the Patapons are out when this happens, Gekoronpa rarepons (The Frog ones) can be seen swimming in the background until Big Daddy's level 3 ends. Thanks for making such a great video! Patapon will always be my #1 game ever. I found the game by complete accident as a young kid. My step brother had found a PSP while on a construction site but it was to badly damaged and didnt work. it still had a game inside and he knew I had a PSP myself. So next time i visited him he gave me the game. That game being Patapon. I never heard of it and it didnt really look that interesting but i gave it a shot. The music was the first thing that got me hooked. I would play dancing to the beats as I played in my room with headphones and sing along to keep rhythm. It became the only game i really played on my PSP, and then i found out it had 2 other games and i went straight to GameStop to pick them. I still listen to the soundtrack when i workout since it always fills me up with motivation and good memories

@@mchaosg that's nice to hear! Take your time! Also the story why I was stuck playing Locoroco 2 and not other games on my PSP back in the day was the left d-pad was drifting (I guess that's foreshadowing that the following console I'll own gets drift too) and I think it was a coincidence that Locoroco has a control scheme that mostly used the shoulder buttons. I still wonder why how I 100% the game before.

Late reply, but that's interesting! The L button on my first 3DS broke, so any game that used it I couldn't play anymore until I got the New 3DS XL.
i have completed the first, second and third game hundreds of times using different types of patapon, characters and strategy. I miss this game
This video popped up on my suggests after finding out about Ratatan, absolutely teared up throughout the early part of the video, thank you for this lovely love letter to such a lovely game series!

Happy to do it my friend!
This video is amazingly well produced! Great to see someone else talking about Patapon.
Has any person played Patapon music when your friends give you their phone, cord, etc. while driving? Imagine the look they give you

I was sooo self conscious about people hearing the music in this game at home or even school, I think I would have died from embarrassment had anyone known. I would exclusively play with headphones until I was older.

I didn't need to imagine, it is clear in their faces back when I was in high school, and I didn't own a pair of headphones. (Heck even still now, I love the ost way too much)
Thank You Tucker for the Video, I Love the Patapon series as well. A HUGE Fan here! I remember I’d drawn Patapons in my Middle School to my High School days. And Even after Japan Studio Shut Down. I’ve Thanked the Former Sony CEO Shawn Layden for making games like Patapon to be on the spotlight. Even Replied me with a Patapon Gif. And Would it be awesome in an Alternate Universe that Patapon 4 might happen with a Mario Maker with a bang? Maybe Before Shutting down Japan Studio? That will be Great? But truth was it didn’t happen and it’s reality still 😞 So Thank you! And to Kotani-San, Rolito-San! Sony and their Producers for this Great Series to love and enjoy 😊

I think I remember seeing your tweet to Shawn! From what I understand, Patafour is going to add a Mario Maker-esque feature. It's good to know the community will be continuing the legacy when Sony no longer wants to.
Wait, your telling me there's a whole series about this and I'm only hearing about it now? Well thank you ratatan for showing me this rabbit hole.

Me too!
I searched for a video like this like 3 years ago, didn't find ANY and I was a little disappointed because it was strange that a game like this hadn't any good review, retrospective or generally a good video. Bless u for making me relive a memory so deep in me! Locoroco next that's a fantastic game too :)

There's a few now, I'm definitely not the first one to cover the games like this but thanks for watching! I would love to talk about LocoRoco someday.
So happy people are making videos on this, this game franchise was one of my favorites as a kid
Loco Rocco and Patapon were by far my favourite PSP games, even more than Monster Hunter. I would love if Patapon and Loco Rocco got new games or some skin of spiritual successor. Light hearted, funky music and lovely art all around. Also, Elite Beat Agent, that would be great.
Ratatan here we come.
Glad to see people still remember patapon :) This was a really well put video, Keep it up man!
Good lord what a great video this is, I also grew up attached to the patapon games, and still find myself pleasantly surprised every time I meet someone who knows the franchise; I had no idea about project Jabberwocky! I've been itching for some new patapon-esque adventure for a while. Thanks for making such a great video on the series and everything around it!

Thanks for watching! It's always great to know people are becoming informed about Jabberwocky through my efforts, it was definitely important to me to spread the word so I'm glad it's paying off!
can't say how good this video made me feel, thinking that patapon playstyle has chance to carry on to new generations
Finally, a video of people covering the game! Love the Second game because it's literally the best story and gameplay-wise. Patapon 3 then kinda ruined that with the annoying difficulty, especially those giant enemies. Also upgrading weapons in that game is just annoying
It makes me so happy to see more Patapon content being made, even if it's just videos from a fan. It helps remind me that the community still exists, and now with Project Jabberwocky, maybe even more will appear! Great vid

I hope so!
This video brings back a lot of good memories for me, I have so much nostalgia for the PSP and Patapon in particular. I was never really a console player, never had a playstation or xbox, but I saw an advertisement for Patapon when my parents took me on vacation in Paris. I could not read french, I didn't know what the game was about, and I had never seen a PSP in my life, but I spent the next year begging them so that I could get a PSP on my birthday to play it with. Patapon 1 and 2 were my favourites but I also had the Loco Roco games, me and my younger brother have so many hours in Patapon and I can't imagine what my life would have been without the appreciation for music and rhythm that it gave me (not to mention how great the games themselves were). Thank you for this retrospective

That's really interesting, it makes sense considering France is Rolito's homeland - I would of loved to see what kind of advertising efforts were made for Patapon there, do you remember any specifics?
@TheKiwiKiwi

It was over a decade ago so the memory is fuzzy sadly, all I can remember is that it was a flyer glued to a pillar that had a lot of advertisements on it
For anybody watching this, it looks like we might be getting a spiritual successor to Patapon called Ratatan.

@@mchaosg bro Patapon practically RAISED me as a kid, this video means alot to me ngl
Man am I glad KZread recommended this to me. Real great work here, I like how you talk about the PSP as well as Patapon. To me the PSP and Patapon are synonymous as well. The 2 PS4 remasters gave me a lot of hope for the future of Patapon, but we know how that turned out. Also I'm so happy to find out about Project Jabberwocky from this video, looks like there's hope for more Patapon, even if it's in the form of a spiritual sequel, after all. Thanks again for covering one of my favourite childhood games, Tucker!

Thanks for watching! In my eyes, the story of the PSP is also the story of Patapon, so I'm to see someone else thinks so too.
I appreciate your work on this one Mister. Thank you.
To be honest i only really like and play constantly Patapon 2. It hit the perfect balance between the two to the point of being one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences i ever seen alongside Locoroco 2 (made by same developers btw, more devs should take note from both imo). Patapon 1 is a good first try experiment but it can be a bit clunky and unnecesarily frustrating at times and 3 is so unbalanced and too much strange decisions that i think is one of my most hated games, as unpopular it can sound. I respect personal opinions though, and i really liked the retrospective. 1 hour well spend 👍 Would you talk about Patafour?
@mchaosg
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, they're not the same developers; Japan Studio only produced Patapon, it was developed by Pyramid. I don't know too much about Patafour other than the devs. I did just recently find out Kotani-san is a Patreon backer, so that's neat!
I was so addicted to Patapon 2, it's my favorite rhythm game, the music, the boss fights, the army building, just an amazing game. I was really underwhelmed by Patapon 3 tho, it just didn't fit my taste I suppose, felt too different
@mchaosg

That's fair, I feel like they are two pretty different experiences overall.
I have always loved the Patapon soundtrack and even made custom recorded Patapon OST to my channel so many years ago. (It's still up!) Thanks for letting me know there's an official soundtrack released in 2017 ! I thought they'd never do that due to the changing music / rhythms of the game mechanics. Brilliant video and subbed !
Had this game when i was less than 10 years old. Mannnn watching this gives so much nostalgia & happiness to see a game i live be loved by other people too. Awesome video
