Patagonia R1 Air - THE lightest and warmest Midlayer ever?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#ultralight #backpacking #Patagonia
In January I reported from the ISPO 2020 and the Patagonia R1 Air was one of the most anticipated pieces of gear from the Tradeshow - and now that I own one, I can say it really does not disappoint! It probably is the warmest midlayer for the weight that I own, and I'm looking forward to go hiking and skitouring with it in the coming months!

For cold runs I’ve been going w a cap air for insulation depending on situation, and the older airshed pullover as the breathable wind block. The Houdini’s too clammy and works against the wicking of the baselayer, but the airshed breathes so well it’s symbiotic. Blocks just enough wind but let’s the steam out. The nano air is great but with the air shed+fleece it’s separating the insulation from the shell so it’s more of a versatile combo. If less active but still moving in the cold it’s either the R1 pullover+airshed or if it’s really cold the R2 tech face, which is basically a slightly beefier R1 grid fleece w a built in airshed. It’s far superior to the regular R2 but at the same price

@@bikeinmotion I concur wholeheartedly, the cap air crew is the one thing I wear every day, from fall to spring, I had to get more than one so as to never be without a clean one although they stay surprisingly fresh for what I do in them. My regular R1 is the full zip since it’s easier to get on over a clingy wool base, but I ordered the R1 air crew hoping they will pair up well. Can’t wait to put is under my Airshed, so far the cap air+1st gen airshed has been the perfect cold combo from 40°F down to the twenties. Lower than that I swap out the airshed for the R1 for max therm and airflow. If it’s below 0 F all 3 lol

@@GermanBadGuy the half zip is classic, but the full zip isn’t much heavier, and it makes it much more versatile. It’s easier to put on and take off, especially over clingy baselayers or thin sweaters. The main flaw of the regular R1 full zip is the pockets don’t zip which was a major oversight they attempt to make up for with the new Air version. The one advantage is the lack of zippers makes the pockets real comfy for jamming cool hands in since the reinforcement binding isn’t cold or scratchy, but they ain’t for storage
