Pat Summitt's beef with Geno Auriemma broke basketball's best rivalry

Спорт

These two coaches started off as friendly acquaintances, but sometimes a rivalry is just so fierce that a friendship falls apart ... and then so does the rivalry.

    Geno was telling recruits/parents that Pat and Holly were sleeping with players and turning them into lesbians. Maybe that was true, maybe it wasn’t. But Pat’s two closest disciples to get their own gigs wound up losing those jobs because they were sleeping with players (Mickie Demoss, Tyler Summit). Maybe that’s a coincidence, but it seems like something that must have been normal to them.

    The Moore recruitment was the last straw for Summitt. She was stunned by the list of demands Moore's mother brought to her, demands that were very much against the recruiting rules, and was even more stunned when UConn seemingly met those demands. That's what Summitt meant by "you and I both know we aren't playing by the same rules."

    I am a UConn fan through and through and adore Auriemma, but I also have so much respect for Pat Summitt as a coach and as a person. Despite how demanding and disciplined she was, she was never afraid to be herself; I remember when Bruce Pearl was in the stands as a shirtless fan during a Lady Vols game, and Summitt showed her appreciation by dressing up like a cheerleader and singing "Rocky Top" at the a future men's game, which blew my mind given her cold sideline demeanor. Her presence made all of college basketball better and is still sorely missed.

    Part of me wonders if the “odd behaviour” Coach Summitt displayed were the beginning stages of her dementia. I know from extensive experience that even before the worst of it appears, out of character choices start cropping up. Friendships that were vital are suddenly over because of a small slight. Moods shift faster than the speed of light. Habits that were engrained for decades change drastically. I hope as we learn more about dementia and Alzheimer’s that we can start to see these signs in more tangible ways. That way, we can help our loved ones that are struggling with it. Most of all: Rest in power, Pat and kudos to Geno for doing his all at the end to restore their friendship. ❤️

I found comments from YOU on a Tennessee fan board from 10 years ago talking about a rented condo (VolNation 10/30/15). Now that's turned into a "fancy house in a gated community?" As a Connecticut resident I am fortunate enough to have been able to witness the rise of both the UConn women's and mens college basketball teams into elite programs. The rivalry with Summit always made the Huskies a better team even in losses because the Vols were the high water mark for that era. There has never been a rivalry that great in women's college basketball and idk if there ever will be. Respect due and RIP to Summit,she has earned her flowers and then some.

    19 combined titles. 11 for Geno, 8 for Pat. Absolute goats. Sucks that they had beef but it made the rivalry better. As a UConn fan and PA native I love Geno (Norristown represent) but Pat is an ABSOLUTE LEGEND. R.I.P. (also that Pat vs Genos cheesteak bar was wild but unpopular opinion: Pat’s is better. Jim’s and Dalessandro’s clear both)

    This beef defined my childhood. Growing up in CT, my family lived and died on those games. My sister and I fought over who had to sleep on camping trips with the Tennessee orange pillow and got a huge kick out of wearing our UConn championship tshirts to Dollywood. One time, we got chosen to stand in the tunnel before a WNBA game and give players high fives as they came out, and i took my hand away when the TN players came by. But all respect to the legendary coach Pat, gone way too soon.

    The game wasn't big enough for both of them. This has happened many times in many sports, and in life itself. When the fighting is finally over, when there's no need to beat each other anymore, the great rivals make their peace.

  • @SULLYtheSojourner
    @SULLYtheSojournerАй бұрын

    Pat couldn't stand getting beat by UCon. Pat's teams won for years with her press. Athletic, black girls pressured turnovers into quick scores. Through the years, when the rest of the teams caught up, she had no halfcourt offense. Eventually, she hired someone to teach a halfcourt offense and became competitive again.
