Is it weird that the part of this that bothers me is that you have to declare an onside kick? I know that it is often obvious, but I love the occasional surprise onside kick

TBF, there's lot of ways to preserve the spirit of an onside kick. Schiano's proposal for one 4th and 15 down still lets you surprise teams. That play was fantastic, no doubt about it. Until you realize that for every play like that, multiple players literally were injured out of their careers running all of the other BORING kickoffs just to get the 1 in a 100 cool play. It's just not worth the cost. Same reason we didn't let Burfict keep playing when if he played in the 80s, he would have been an NFL idol. We care more about the players now.

Probably because it could really break the game, if they’re going to make it much easier to convert them, as they probably would. You end up in a situation where a kickoff could give them the ball on their 40, and an onside kick that you don’t recover gives them the ball on their 46, why not try it?

I mean I can't really see a reason for a team winning to do an onside kick without either looking like the most unsportsmen like team. Or a coach that has no faith in their Defense that has been doing enough to keep the team in the lead. The only people I can think that run on onside before the 4th are usually teams that have a coach playing for his job. Like I think we like the idea of the "surprise Onside kicks" but best case it wins you what? 2 games? Like name me a playoff appearing team that only made it because of one or two onsidekicks and I'll show you how minimal if impacts the history of the Modern NFL.

I'll go off the board. In Canada we have what you would call a 5 yard halo on punt returns. And if the ball stays in the end zone on punts/kickoffs it's 1 point. So in the NFL I'd maybe suggest a 5 or 10 yard halo (smaller field ) if the ball is kicked inside the 20, reducing major hits. And you would still have the ability for an onside kick up to the 20 yard line. And if it hits the end zone, the return team gets a shot at a 2 point conversion. That way they have to try and keep the ball out of the end zone and in play.

  • @mae2759

The NFL isn’t scripted, but it definitely feels like the NFL has a vested interest in the outcome of a lot of the major games in the way they get officiated and all. And, the vaguer you make the rules, the easier it is for the NFL to just stand behind the officials calls and say “it’s a judgement call”.

The convolusion is intentional by the NFL. The more complicated, the harder it will be for your average fan to follow, the easier it is to put their finger on the scales of the outcome. Also, it’s a good way for the NFL to have the excuse in a few years to go “we tried to make it safer, but you didn’t like it (or we couldn’t), so our only option is to get rid of the kickoff altogether”. And next it will be some other “unsafe play” until they just out flags on them

Nobody was kicking to him since they could now kick it out of the endzone. Same thing with players like Patrick Peterson and DeSean Jackson. They were destructive in the return game on punts but useless on kickoffs. If Cordell Patterson played during the original kickoff rules he probably would absolutely dominate the return game.

I once heard an interesting thought on the kickoff that might be worth looking into at this point. Instead of a kickoff, the "kicking team" starts with the ball 4th & 15 from the 40. They can then go for the 4th down, much like an onside kick, or they can punt it away. With the power of today's punters, the outcome would be close to the same as a traditional kickoff, but still provides for the thrill and advantages of the onside kick.

Kickoffs are one of my personal favorite plays, when they're returned. If the goal is to not make kickoffs pointless, and prevent injuries, then this is a good idea. Almost 80% of kickoffs were touchbacks last year. 17% of all concussion injuries were from the kickoff. Yet kickoffs were only 6% of all plays. That's a lot. Yeah, this is going to look different but I guarantee after next season we're going to be happy about this decision. I want kickoff returns actually back.

@@gratefuldeadmau5610 It's exceptionally rare that a team even scores on a kickoff. The vast majority of kickoffs end with the ball either getting kicked through the end zone, a touchback, or fair catched. Very rarely does a returner even want to try to run after the catch. The entire kickoff as it's been is just incredibly antiquated and stale. That the risk of serious injury is so high, just so a team can maybe get the ball to what is usually the 40 at best only makes the kickoff that much more stupid. I mean, I get your sentiment - I'm not a fan of how wussified the NFL has generally become as most of their safety rules changes have basically crippled what modern defenses can do - but, in this particular case, I think the proposed changes would actually make the game fundamentally better.

Dude this creates so many jobs in the nfl. You’re going to need legit guys who can run beat and block and tackle. You’re going to need a field goal kicker a punter and a guy who can land one of these bad boys on a consistent basis.

With only 53 roster spots each job created eliminates another job, its a zero sum game

I had all but given up on the kickoffs. This will be an improvement. Looking forward to it.

They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.

Times have changed. The kickers are stronger. They could have also done one of two things, either move the kickoff spot to back to the 30, like they used to have, or make every kickoff be like the kickoff after a safety, with the punter kicking from the 20 instead of the kickoff specialist.

besides the no more surprise onside kick, this actually sounds like a great concept (might need some tweaks, but seems like a great way to add strategy)

One thing I am not clear on: if you do the squib kick and it lands in the landing zone and the two returners don't get to the ball in time and it goes into the endzone...is it an automatic touchback, or can they still run it out? I guess it doesn't matter YET because it's not the rule YET, but...enquiring minds want to know.

I know its a crazy thought but if they dont want injuries put the the ball of the 50 and let them try to make it through the uprights. If they make it they get 1 pt either way the other team gets it as a touchback. I dont know if this would add or take away from the game but I like the idea.

They're talking about end of game whether or not you go for the 0-20 landing rolls into the end zone or take the set 35. I think the caliber of kicker is just going to get better. Kickers that can't reliably land it in the 0-15 or even 0-10 area are going to have a lot less value than those that can. Its like how the QB has adapted overtime.

Not a huge football fan but typically watch the big games. This past superbowl the kickers had such a big boot that they were kicking it past the endzone almost everytime for a touchback. This new kickoff actually sounds really interesting and adds some more technicality to the play.

Here's a crazy but simple idea that I think would work, add to player safety, and add a completely new element to the game. Allow one forward pass for the receiving team on every kickoff or punt return up to 10 yards from the point of the reception. The kicking team would have to focus more on the actions of the other 10 players, not just getting past them to destroy 1 player at full speed.

Probowl should change to a bracket system where each division gets to have their own probowl team to square off in different challenges. And move it to the middle of the season where teams basically get a second bye week and extend the season to 18 weeks.
