    I kinda like the chain gang actually. The problem isn’t the chains, it’s the spot of the ball. The chains are an accurate way of measuring, but it’s ridiculous to measure something that precisely when the ball spot is always off by a yard.

Therein lies the problem! For example, assume it's 3rd & 1 and the offense goes for a rushing play...and the QB hands off to the running back, who after crossing the LOS, is immediately bombarded by 5 defenders, no one can see exactly where the true spot of the ball should be simply because by the time you pull everyone off the running back, he may have moved one way or another that will affect the call and thus, affect the game!

Refs still need to be on the field to spot the ball/separate piles, manage players, etc.

    And even then, when you have a mass of bodies around a player, it can be impossible to tell when they hit the ground. People want to point to Europe, but the reality is that their game is more cut and dry and cleaner as to whether or not a ball or player crosses a line. That isn't the case with football because it is far more dynamic.

    This is a classic solution to a problem that doesn't exist. There is NO REASON to get rid of the chain gang. It is consistent and fast. Just think of how buggy the new system will be.Have you seen soccer VAR? It is quite often blatantly wrong with offsides calls (they freeze the frame when they want, sometimes the ball is still being struck and sometimes after the ball is struck). That is what we have to look forward to. And chipping an oblong ball isn't really feasible, either. The orientation of the ball will matter...and it will end up being LESS accurate than replay and the chain gang.

  • @troybaxter

    @troybaxter

    23 күн бұрын

    And chipping the ball doesn't solve the inherent issue of what constitutes the ball stopping. It isn't the ball's momentum, but the location of a second body (the player). And the player is going to be the absolute hardest to determine if they are down or not, because it's not just single points, but various parts of your body.

    If they are going the sensor route, they will end up changing it if its anything like the usfl recently used. When the usfl came back they introduced this new tech, but it didnt take long that qbs were complaining about the slight weight difference in the ball. After that, the company that made the tech introduced a super precise option that uses multiple cameras and doesn't require the sensor in the ball. This is what the ufl (xfl+usfl) are using today.

But never, "those damn chaingangs are ruining the sport of football!!" Hell, I think jumping in the air has caused more damage to the game, with how players have been hit and come down wrong on a leg & snapped a leg/ankle/knee....

  • @troybaxter

    It's not the simple. You have to consider the state of the player and whether they are down or not. Yeah, we can see if the ball crosses the goalline, but the question is whether or not the player's body was on the ground before the ball crossed or if the ball gets jarred loose. It's just not as simple as y'all make it out to be, and parse through the noise to find the accurate and reliable data is sometimes outright impossible.

    I was on a chain gang, it was hilariously fun. I clipped a marker on the link on whatever 5 yard line was nearest the center of the chain ends. For example, if the spot was on the 24, I would clip a marker on the link on the 30 yard line. Then when a measurement was needed, that link with the marker would be centered on the 30 yard line and that's how they would measure.

  • @RyTrapp0

    @RyTrapp0

    They say that because it's the *TV people* putting the line on the field, not the league. Because it's a TV feature, not actually apart of the game, they aren't apart of the officials. As if a guy holding a stick "about" where a ref said the ball should be was ever accurate...

    So the guy holding the first stick jogs off the sideline, 30 yards out onto the field, watching out for players and officials, keeping an eye on the chain and his stick partner... then puts it down on the field where he thinks he was on the sideline. I think the sensors can probably achieve that accuracy. 😁

  • @matthewjosephthecommonsens2940

    @matthewjosephthecommonsens2940

    @cf2851 yeah that's not how chain gang works. There is a marker that clips to the links of the chain that delineated the LOS and thats where the down marker goes. The 2 side judges then keep track of thr original LOS and the current LOS so if the chains go down they can line the chains up exactly the way they were before. The chain gang system is so incredible accurate at spotting the ball it's almost unbelievable.
