I love the hire as a Louisville fan. He was a successful assistant and then done very well building smaller programs

Underwhelming hire? Are you guys joking? Did you even watch his press conference this afternoon? He is a Family Man and a Man of God. He mentioned Denny Crum and Rick Pitino and also told every last former player that they can come to practice any time they want, no questions asked. Kenny Payne was a former player and he never said stuff like that. He even acknowledged the fans. This was an excellent hire in my opinion and that matters because I am a lifelong Louisville Cardinals fan not some talking head on a podcast.

I heard this point made about mid-major programs. Even if they got 26-4 or something like that, they typically get seeded around 11 at best and often times 13-16. They have a very difficult first round game and if they pull the upset have to follow it up with another difficult second round game. A 22-8 power conference team is probably around a 6 seed and they at least have a winnable first round game. It is hard to rack up NCAA tournament wins at a school like Charleston. The St. Peters, Lafeyette, and George Mason type runs only occur once every five years or so.

@@CardinalChris502 Yes. I see it similar to horse racing. The top and experienced jockeys almost always get the best horses to ride. Therefore, it is stacked for them to get the wins and Top 3 finishes in their races most of the time. The weaker and newer jockeys get the weaker horses. Those jockeys would have to run a perfect/near perfect race to get their wins and Top 3 finishes. They could be great jockeys but masked by being given weaker horses. Kelsey could be a great coach with his NCAA tournament performances masked by bad seeds being a small conference school and recruiting limitations. It is hard to tell. I am not concerned about offense or defense. I want to see more consistent play and energy, accountability, team chemistry, and leadership develop throughout the season by both coaches and players. I want to see team leaders like Padgett, Siva, Kuric, Dieng, and even Quentin Snyder develop. Those type of leaders have been missing the last 4-5 years.

@@seanholley7284 My thoughts exactly, I think he’ll be successful with a higher caliber of athlete/player. He dominated his peers that were on his level. I’m not saying he’ll dominate the ACC year 1…but I definitely believe we will get back to being a very competitive basketball team again.

I was shocked it was someone I had never heard of for both the kentucky team hc hires, and I live here.As a Louisville fan you really wonder what it would've looked like if rick never got kicked out, the last 2 years have been miserable. We were legit championship caliber in 2020 but covid took the tourney away, other than that Mack's years left you wanting more. 1 tourney win since then is all we have to show. UofL UConn & Nova are the only schools with 3+ title appearances with no losses, Uconn with 6 which is insane. Other Blue bloods are actually just really good at getting deep without winning it. Hopefully he brings the team up. Selling points are easy: UofL's endowment for sports is insane so NIL is not an issue, one of the nicest arenas in college ball, UK and UofL are the pro teams in KY, poster child for Adidas college athletics, Cardinal is iconic, tied for 8th in titles (all since the 80s) and 12th most wins all time.

I was around 6 years old when Denny Crum was hired. I didn't really care about basketball then. I became a huge fan when I was in high school. We don't know what's going to happen with Kelsey but he hit all the right notes at the presser today. Time will tell.

No NCAA tournament wins.. sure.. but what he has is MOMENTUM. Success follows this guy everywhere he goes. He knows how to lead and make decisions, and most importantly he knows how to win. Of course time will tell if he can win with this program, but he certainly has a plan of execution for his entire staff that he appears to be very confident in. He appears to be exactly what UofL needs right now.. the opposite of Kenny Payne.

I think Kelsey is the kind of coach that can do more with less. That's what a great coach does, and then higher star players suddenly want to be there. I think Kelsey will prove to be a great hire. When they hired KP, his resume was full of holes. He never played in Louisville Championship game, and I heard he barely played the entire tournament. He was UK Associate Head Coach, he recruited. I could recruit to Kentucky! Hey, you want to come to KY? That's about all that it takes right now. This guy is way more qualified because he has nearly a .700% winning percentage at a D1 school.

Wow. I didn't know that.. But, no top tier coach wanted the job. The Louisville hire got very little exposure on ESPN. It's a program that has no appeal on a national level. Doesn't move the needle except in Louisville. Hired a pretty good mid level coach. He has moved programs from poor status to good. That's what needs to happen at Louisville. And many times, these mid level coaches become great coaches, eg, Jay Wright.
