Regarding Isaiah 53:10
www.desiringgod.org/messages/...
As with every reaction we do This is not an endorsement of the genre, the song or even the artists themselves. That is a matter of conscience. Our goal is to listen to each piece openly and objectively. Pointing out where it presents truth and error from a Christian worldview. This exercise is solely to help develop discernment and to show the often erroneous view the secular world has of Christianity as well as where they unintentionally get it right. It is important to note that we believe pure truth can only be found in Gods word.

I grew up in church, hearing a lot of warnings about demonic stuff in Black Sabbath and other bands. As an adult, I went back and actually listened to their lyrics and I was pretty shocked that they were singing against pride, vanity, war, hatred, casting out the poor and weak, etc. So I'm a lot more open minded these days about them. Thanks for your ministry, y'all!

When Ozzy re-emerged on his own in 1980 he capitalized on the image of being satanic. I went to one of his concerts at the Bakersfield Civic Center in 1980. Randy Rhodes had a polished brass pick guard on his guitar, and would use it to reflect the spotlights into peoples eyes while trying to stare at them all wicked.... I wasn't scared. It was annoying.

"Is God Dead?" is another christain like song. It may not seem that way but if you listen carfully in the lyrics you will see he is confused of if God is dead or alive. He also says he don't believe God is dead in the song. Someone might say well they say God is Dead in the song like it's a statement many times. But he also says in the song where he has a voice in his head screaming God is Dead. That is maybe an example of the voice screaming. Also note he never said he believe God is dead he instead said He don't believe God is dead.

The “Holy Wars” part of the song refers primarily to the Troubles in Northern Ireland where the conflicting Republican & Unionist populations identified as Catholic and Protestant respectively. If you had a Catholic sounding name, if you identified as a catholic and practiced at mass, you were a target for Loyalist paramilitary forces and the British Army; and vice versa. The song specifically came about when Megadeth played Belfast in the late 80’s and Mustaine made a particular arse of himself on stage when he made reference to “the cause” and a riot ensued.

I'm just another atheist metalhead who wants to congratulate you on your reactions. You really show that you can be open-minded, and show appreciation for music (despite the label it carries) and still hold strong to your beliefs and principles, AND still be critical and make insightful commentary about what you think is right and wrong about the songs. Also, as a father, I also appreciate that you take time to listen to music with your son and comment on it in a respectful manner. Parents with religious beliefs usually have trouble with their kids listening to metal just based on their preconceived ideas and perceptions of the genre and it's great that you take some time to learn about the genre and the artists with an open mind and your insight on the music. I have been a Sabbath Fan for almost 50 years. the lyrics for MANY of the songs are about social attitudes, vices, warnings about drug and alcohol use, etc. ie Snowblind is about the negativity of drug abuse...not an invitation to go out and abuse cocaine...there are warnings about the evils of war, the damage that can be caused by worshipping demons or satan...etc. why assume that their lyrical content is anti-christian on the one hand, and promoting satanism or whatever on the other? it may be of some note to remember that they did not use any upside down crucifixes despite some of the album covers depicting demonic possession...this should be understood as a warning, not any kind of promotion. the cover art on sabbath bloody sabbath is pretty much the only one of it's kind of that (Ozzy) era...that depicts any kind of religious symbolism...and it was a BLATANT attempt to sell a product based on the then popularity and controversy surrounding the hit movie "The Exorcist". in those days, album covers sold the albums, so why not associate something with a #1 international box office smash....this is MARKETING 101 people...a really good way to SELL a lot of records, and usually the Record COMPANY had control of the album art approval, not the band itself...Black Sabbath did not set out to promote evil deeds...Ozzy himself was completely misunderstood in the '80's when he wrote the song "suicide solution"...the "solution" was referring to the liquid alcohol (such as the use of the word "solution" in the Sherlock Holmes novel 7 % solution in reference to a tincture of Cocaine which could be injected....not a "solution" to a problem. lyrically it describes the path of self destruction travelled by alcoholics...not a "way out" for suicidal teenagers...something of which he was accused after one of his records was found at the scene of a teen suicide. there will always be those with low IQ scores that cannot see past their own noses that will buy into the hysteria of "hidden satanic messages" etc....but really? there are other artists who are far more obvious in their messages...like maybe Slayer?...let's do a review of some of THEIR lyrical offerings, if the popular consensus is that these messages can be found in Metal music. There is something far more objectionable in most hip hop and rap.

Agree with you on most counts but not about drugs. Sweet Leaf is about "wonders" of pot and Snowblind is not against or pro cocaine, it's just a statement of their lifestyle at the time (pretty much every band in mid 70s was doing coke). Just listen to the beginning of the last verse: "Don't you think I know what I'm doing, Don't tell me that it's doing me wrong." Sabbath lyrics were never very deep, they were pretty straight forward and simple to understand. What they wrote is what they felt. You never have to wonder about their meaning at the time they were written.

So glad I found you guys on here. It's about time there was someone who was willing to teach that not all dark songs are completely Dark and Bad towards Religion. If the Religious ignore all things dark instead of using understanding, how can we understand others pain and problems through empathy. We have to realize this to properly understand a state of mind that is outside of our own. You guys have nailed it on every song you've talked about on here.

When I became born again I had to make so many cuts with my music. The first time I listened to After forever I was only vibing to Ozzy’s vocals and Geezer’s guitar play I didn’t really know Geezer has a history with Christianity. The truth is most metal bands sing about a lot of dark stuff. I then went back and listened to the whole Master of Reality album and the themes are actually pretty good a good message in the songs.

I would say to the comment regarding the people crucifying Jesus vs God's Plan, I feel both can be true. God's plan accounted for them to call for his Crucifixion, he knew they would, but that doesn't take away their culpability. Basically both can be true and are not mutually exclusive.

Max Sand I see what you mean because I used to see it that way. It’s not an essential issue but It’s a good point of discussion. The people who killed Jesus were the tool that God used to enact his plan. They didn’t actually have a choice in the matter. It was Gods plan that those particular people would do it at that particular time and in that particular way. Which fulfilled many prophecies. Every detail was planned before creation. Otherwise God would have been hanging out hoping someone would take his bait and kill Jesus. No, God is sovereign. He controls all things. “This Jesus [was] delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23)” “For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:17-18) www.desiringgod.org/articles/who-killed-jesus

@@roberthoughton7127 "Foreknowledge" to me means he knew what events would transpire, and the age old "Free will vs Determinism" debate will always rage on, but I am a firm believer that one can enact god's plan and be acting with, what appears to us anyhow, as free will at the same time. IE he knew the outcome, but by knowing the outcome he isn't really gambling on it. He knew they would enact his plan for him because they were flawed, they were sinners and they were human. This was a plan banking on the ugliest nature of humans, not human goodness.

@@roberthoughton7127 Reading this reminded me of the concept of predestination. Does it mean that we are predestined either in heaven or in hell if both even exist? I'm sorry pastor but it is quite perplexing to think that no matter what good or bad things we do, if we are destined to the aforementioned destinations then we are literally just pawns of God then. I am particularly sad of the fate of Judas Iscariot because as you have said, "It was Gods plan that those particular people would do it at that particular time and in that particular way". I am a confused Christian by the way and like everyone else here loves to listen to metal music.

Hey! Metalhead here. Living in a secular circle like I am, I have no idea what do religious people like you think about my favorite music. Metal has usually these "satanic" and "evil" lyrics mostly because they can be viewed as cool and provocative, not really as a real devil worship or something. You could also contact bangertv -channel and do some kind of conversation with them about evil lyrics and how people see them.

Keep spreading peace and love guys :). My main suggestion is probably unlikely to be done because it is a 30 minutes song... but that is The Door by Neal Morse. He is a Christian progressive rock/metal musician and that song is part of a concept album about the life of Martin Luther and the Reformation. You might find the music and lyrics interesting. And, of course, Ghost of Perdition by Opeth.

I am free in Christ, and the only time I curb my listening habit is when I’m in danger of letting metal get too important to me. Also, I draw the line when the lyrics are over the top blasphemous (eg. “The Thrashin’ of the Christ” by Municipal Waste). I love Jesus, and I really like to jam. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Just caught your video, ..I have been a Black Sabbath fan since about 1969....(when they did their first record) ….the history is Geezer butler was "into" the Occult as a youngster. Many of his lyrics are theological and struggle with Dualism (meaning he struggled) this song is mostly Tony Iommi (guitarist) with the help of Geezer... Geezer's dabbling in the darker side is really the original seed, but he has since grown up...many years ago. I urge you to listen to the entire Black Sabbath collection. Not all of it is as striking as After Forever, but many are insightful and many warn of poor choices. The band is well known for its philosophical and theological lyricisim. I also urge you to take a close look at the album art for the record Sabbath Bloody Sabbath....its cover is also a warning, and its reverse is a reward. When you first see it, it looks like an evil orgy of demons. And it is...taking the soul of a dying man who lived his life without the light. The revers is the exact opposite, A dying man surrounded by those who loved him, grieve his loss. He was loved and will not suffer the fate of the man on the cover. Some of the lyrics to that record are prophetic as well, just not to the degree as After Forever.

Disclaimer: Comment written before watching the video. A few things to note. First, Black Sabbath is my favorite band of all time. I know everything there is to know about them. One of the biggest misconceptions about Black Sabbath is that they were a "satanic" band. This is patently false. The entire concept of the band was based on a horror film by the same name. The intention was not writing dark music just for the sake of writing dark music. Instead the intention was to play upon and invoke peoples seeming enjoyment of being frightened for the thrill and excitement of it from doing things like watching horror films. While their lyrics have some satanic themes in them, they were never intended to be a kind of recruitment tool of satanism. In fact it was exactly the opposite. Geezer Butler who wrote most of the lyrics for the band is now and was then actually very religious. The lyrics of the self titled song on their first album were written after Geezer Butler woke up in the middle of the night and saw what he described as an evil presence looking at him from the foot of his bed. To reference the corresponding lyric a "Big black shape, with eyes of fire". When the band was signed on their first record contract, they recorded the album live, over the span of 12 hours. They had no hand in any of the promotional material and artwork of the record jacket. It was the record company who put the satanic themes on the album artwork, most notably an inverted cross on the inside of the record jacket. The band was completely surprised by this because as I said, their intention was not to be or promote satanism. The lyrics to this song in particular (After Forever) are to be taken in the context of a person who believes in religion speaking to someone who does not. To break it down as simply as I can, the entire purpose to this song is to say to anyone and everyone "You may think heaven and hell, god and satan do not exist, but you can never possibly know the truth." It's sort of a warning almost, don't write off religion as nonsense, because you may be wrong and by the time you find out, it's going to be too late, if you change your ways now you can be saved. I could go one, but I feel I have talked about everything that is relevant to this video.

I too am a huge Sabbath fan. I've never heard Geezer say that he was religious. I've watched just about every interview with Sabbath online that I could find and I have heard him say that he was into the occult and read lots of material on the subject. I am a born again christian and am not saying that I know what was / is in Geezer's heart but did want to point that out. I don't think that being as addicted to drugs and alcohol as the band was being indicative of men living for Christ. I would love to believe that all members of Sabbath were saved and going to heaven but just looking at their actions, I don't believe this to be true. I'm not judging their hearts! That is not my place! Only God knows. That being said, Master of Reality was a great record for sure. My personal fave is Into the Void!

Also, if you haven't listened to the Legendary Soundboard Tapes -- Merry Christmas: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZiOpLdwoNSxeqQ.html

Don’t stop a record in the middle of a song, that’ll screw up the record

If you need stop the record: please PICK UP the arm. Vinyl is pretty fragile, especially one from 1971! Keep that poster pristine, too. That's a rare first print, even my copy doesn't have one and I bought mine in mid 70s.

@@fabbrunette that is a WB original press from here in america, the english version was pressed by vertigo. Both came with the poster, a poster from either one is worth some cash.
