What do you make of this incident? Act of God that the pastor was not killed?

Thank you for addressing the training issue. I've seen some other church security discussions around this, and they gloss over the training pieces. As far as the guy who tackled goes... congratulations for taking action. But I think it pretty clearly shows he doesn't have a lot of training in how to control and subdue someone, especially an active shooter.

Yes there was a case in Pennsylvania close to 10 years ago. The man’s name was Gregory Eldred, he shot his ex wife while she played the organ. People held him until the police arrived but before they did he got up and shot her again. He was under control but also never really under control. He should not have been able to get up a second time, or still have the gun! Thanks for sharing Ed.

I posted this on my LinkedIn page and talked about the importance of training for congregations. Conducting an assessment is great but does no good if the congregation doesn’t know if they should be in a flight or fight status.

Hi Stacy, although many houses of worship have no idea where to start even on training and could be seduced on active shooter tactics training. That’s why I like a risk assessment first for them first as if done well it tells them what training they need so they don’t waste resources on purchasing training that isn’t a good fit for them.

Watching the brother who jumped over the railing to tackle the gunman, I'm reminded of Jack Ruby who shot Oswald in 1963: Ruby was tackled by police security, yet he was still squeezing on the trigger, until they got the gun from him. Fortunately in this incident, they got the gun away from the gunman before he was able to fire off shots!

Your question (5:18) I would answer like this: pastors, ministers, priests are men whose focus is on the accuracy of their messages, not so much on the people within the service. They have to be!

16:35, brother, this is what I take from your question: this is the reality of the world we live in now; things we thought could never happen (especially in a house of worship), can happen! As we draw nearer to end of the world, evil will proliferate; 2 Timothy 3:13 attests to that. The church can get better, but the outside world will not!

This story should remind all of us who confess Christ, that, this is the reality of the world today: even a pastor is vulnerable to crazed gunmen!
