    @@benjaminmiddaugh2729 that's a very diplomatic way of saying it's overpriced. "oh, it's too pricey to buy every week, probably should just buy it on special occasions."

    @@ellanica No, it's an accurate acknowledgment that special occasions can justify higher quality, more expensive, goods. Doing just fine with cheaper stuff most of the time does not mean that a more expensive item is overpriced. Better ingredients, more labor-intensive production, and (sadly) branding can definitely bring the price up surprisingly high, but as long as the branding markup is minimal, I'm okay with high-priced goods, because they can actually be desirable at times. But, like our expert in the video, I'm certainly not buying them often.

    You remember the knife guy? Every single one, he was going "Yeah, this one is a show-piece, so it's clearly more expensive. This other one, though, is what you'd buy for a commercial kitchen because it does the job and you won't cry when you wear it out and have to replace it."

    This guy may be an expert, but I’m Italian and a cook by profession: that white ring that pasta al dente “should” have is bull. The white ring is simply uncooked starch and it’s present in any pasta. Cooking pasta al dente to perfection means cooking it just enough for that very ring to disappear.

  • @dgphi

    @dgphi

    Yeah, I stopped listening to him at that point. Clearly that white ring is just uncooked pasta. You can see it get smaller the more you cook the pasta.

    I'm glad he reacted to the price of the pasta ! This looks MASSIVELY overpriced. My mom is a pasta maker, everything is artisanal and organic, her pasta is top quality and it is roughly 4 euros/500 g grams. More or less $4.4/pound. This is in a rural region of France, so I can understand that there are some discrepancies in the cost of living but still, it sounds like too much difference.

    I think the problem is the more expensive pastas here are all SO expensive... just spend £1.50 instead of £0.80, the difference is pretty big... but the difference if you spend £4 instead of £1.50 is a lot lower. Diminishing returns!
