You should ask your teacher, but the point is that past tense include signal words last yesterday and ago and you don't know exact time, so we put form of past simple tense, but past continues you know exact time like yesterday at 8 o'clock and also, past continues is a little continous time than past tense like for example, teacher .....(come) to the class while the students ....(sit) on the chair. Correct: Teacher (came) to the class while the students (were sitting) on the chair which verb takes more time? I guess (come) takes more time than (sit) so (past tense) goes to the longer time of the doing of verb like (come), but (sit) is not long time verb so it'll be past continous and these 2 tenses will be mixed together in one sentence if the sentence include (when or while) in the middle of the sentence Just equal that, which is the longer verb, sit or come verb? and then decide, but obviously sit is a little time verb

I am not sure, but i think that's because the question is how long ... the flu, so someone is asking us how long we had the flu, so it already ended.
