Can I make it 'personal?For example: 'It is said that he might come next week' Is it possible to say : 'He is said to might come next week' ? If I drop 'might', the sentence seems to lose its original meaning. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be considered correct, since a modal verb can't be preceded by 'to'...

Thank you very much for your lesson. It is complicated for learners to understand where the “to” is needed and where it isn't, and Why. It is an obstacle to understanding infinitive. I normally considered that “to do something” means the next step of action for the purpose. - She wants me to leave. - I told you to wait. - I like to drink juice in the morning. - He decided to give a one-man show. but I think my understanding may be inaccurate. - He is said to be 100 years old. In this case, "to" seem cannot be understanding as "the next step of action for the purpose." What sense does "to" make in this sentence? I have spent a lot of time to understand what is infinitive. How to understand infinitive. But seem I haven't found the underlying meaning of it. Could you give me some help? Thank you very much !

I have thought this question for one night. May be The "to" in "He is said to be 100 years old." is for the link. There is only one real situation, (Suppose it is A) but There are many rumored versions (Suppose They are X,Y,Z) - He is said to be 100 years old. just like that A is said to be X. Link X to A. Match A with X. That's the meaning I thought for "to" in this situation. Is that the right way to understand ? Thank you.

Hi, If you don’t know when to an infinitive. Here are a few rules to help. To say why you do something: I was training 2 hours a day TO get fit. To say why something exists. There are doctors and nurses to care for the sick. After too.... to and enough to. So, she was clever enough to guess the answer. or The parcel was too big to be sent by post. After the adjectives: afraid, cheap, delighted, difficult, disappointed, easy to... , essential, expensive, glad, happy, hard, interesting, impossible, kind, pleased, possible, safe, sorry, surprised, and relieved to. There are lots of areas of the English where "to" is used and maybe cannot come under one umbrella rule. Hope this helps!

Hello. Hope you're doing well. I have a question: I have learnt that we use the passive when the subject is actually recieving the action, so this sentence looks awkward to me. He is said to be a hundred years old. Is "he" recieving the action? Does anybody tell him anything? I think that there is a difference between " she is said to " and " she is said ", isn't there? Hi hesam, So for your sentence: He is said to be a hundred years old. No, he is not told this. It is simply a reporting verb, reporting what people say about him. Hope that helps! 🙏

I found this rule on internet. Rule :--) We can use a pattern with "PREPARATORY THERE" and a passive reporting verb followed by a to-infinitive, With example Pattern: "There" is/are + passive verb + to be+ noun. What is preparatory "THERE" which is mentioned in this pattern and rule . Because I know only Dummy "THERE". I hope you help me ❤❤

Both it and there function as a kind of preparatory subject with the real subject placed after the verb. But they are used in different ways and for different purposes. We use there as some kind of preparatory subject to say that something exists somewhere. We put the real subject after the verb be. There are lots of people in the waiting room. There used to be a fancy restaurant on this street. I hope that helps.

There + passive reporting verb + to-infinitive There is said/believed/thought to be … = It is said/believed/thought that there is … For example: There are believed to be some ghosts in that house.(=Some ghosts are believed to be in that house. It is believed that there are some ghosts in that house.) It is a great idea for a lesson. I will put it on my list of upcoming lessons!

Please make a video about PASSIVE REPORTING VERBS because I have watched lots of videos on KZread but they make me quite confused if V1 and V2 are in the simple past tense or V1 is in simple past tense and V2 is in the past continuous tense. They have many versions of those, so the more I have watched, the more I become confused. Ex1: They said Tom killed the man. Version 1: Tom was said to have killed the man. Version 2: Tom was said to kill the man. So, which one is correct? Ex2: They said Tom was watching TV. Version 1: Tom was said to have been watching TV. Version 2: Tom was said to be watching TV. So, which one is correct?
