Partying In Europe's Biggest Slum | Lunik IX

Lunik 9 is an old communist era housing estate built on the outskirts of Kosice in the east of Slovakia. Now it is better known as being Europe’s largest gypsy slum. Everyone told us not to visit because it was dangerous and so I had to go and investigate to see if it was as dangerous as everybody told me or if it was something different. What I found surprised and shocked me. Welcome to the party at Lunik 9!

Giving the camera to that kid and letting him go film was a seriously fresh idea. You dont get that on any type of travel documentary. To see the young ones and how they act naturally was brilliant. Changing the game Bald!

As if : hey be careful how you act here ; this will be shown to the world. They care when they feel they are observed by world...but when you're just total random without a camera or many fans who would miss you... I don't know: I would be worried. I'm sure a lot of them are nice but I wouldn't come into their settlements like that : p Bald knows how to approach them ; he has charm; I don't : >

People beat up America for slavery but ain’t nobody beaten up Slovakia for the way you treat people it’s disgusting.. Hi Ben, just wanted to say thanks for the video, I too have visited Lunik 9 by car, twice. The smell is really is quite something, and the second time I went there, I had to leave due to them throwing rocks and firecrackers at my car for some reason. It was interesting to see the inside perspective and that they admit they're at fault for the issues at Lunik 9. I'm a Brit expat who lived in Estonia for 9 years and has spent the majority of the last few years driving around the ex-USSR and Yugoslav regions, you'll often find gypsies will blame everyone else for their problems and try to pretend they've repaired them and the government didn't care.

The throwing out of trash over the balcony happens always where gypsies live in such buildings. Even in Germany where everything is quite well organized and trash is collected on a weekly basis. You can see this happening in main cities like Berlin of München. It is a mentality thing, refusing to adapt to quite simple rules, like; the trash is picked up on Tuesday. Nevertheless they throw it out on the streets whenever they feel like. It is egotistical. Inside the home everything as clean as possible and all the rest outside is not their problem.

This is the issue. I was raised American but my grandma is German and grew up in Hungary. During WW2 they fled back to Germany and she would always tell stories of the Gypsies in both countries. In the states many people empathize with the Gypsy’s and have little idea what their actually like. I’ve been to Europe and visited family and seen first hand what they will do in the streets, littering, and begging wise. A culture I will never be able to understand.

It's probably their nomadic culture, cleaning up your surroundings is a habit of settled people that can't just pack and move somewhere else when it starts to stink, as for the government they've built them houses and gave jobs because you had to work back in the day and later many people lost their jobs during the transformation so it's a poor excuse.

I was eagerly waiting for this episode! I shot a documentary about gypsy settlements in Slovakia a couple months ago and it was quite an experience. However bad it may look, the situation is getting better. Their mayor is a smart guy with a university degree and does everything he can to improve things. The crime rate decreased substantially, many people are getting new flats and they are working on taking away the garbage. By the way, if you want a really horrific experience, you should go to gypsy settlements at Svinia, Secovce, Trebisov or Chminianske Jakubovany. I've never seen things as terrible as there. You're basically crawling through human feces, 6 year olds are doing drugs in front of you, there are dead dogs rotting on piles of garbage etc. It's a very sad side of Slovakia and it's extremely difficult to find a solution to the gypsy problem. Great video as always by the way;)

All left except for the Roma. I think these "blocks of flats - činžiaky" as we call them were destroyed within three years. It's also in Rimavská Sobota, Spišská Nová Ves, Krompachy, Lomnička, Dobšiná and many other places in Slovakia. Our government had build houses for them which they had destroyed in a single year !! They are "victims" exactly as they are in Serbia. They make their cardboard slum settlement on some non developed piece of land in some town, and when the town or the government wants to build something, we have to give them FREE apartments. so, basically, if you are a Gipsy, you just make a tent of a cabin anywhere you want, and wait for the owners of the land to evict you, and then ask for the government to give you a permanent living for free in some new building, because you are "a victim of prejudice and injustice". And the government obliges, of course, because they are nothing but EU puppets. EU is always more than ready to pour money for their accommodation.

This was such a surreal video. I learned about this location from a weird Google Maps locations video by Tuv, a young KZreadr that talks about weird and scary events. It wasn't the first time I saw buildings looking at such level of horrible, but this place gave me exceptionally uncomfortable vibe, I thought it's a former warzone at first. Usually you'd assume that people living there look just the same way, however judging by the Maps photos it already seemed like they wear fairly nice clothes, have TVs and some even cars, not to mention an obviously modern playground, a school and a new house for more motivated residents. But what actually surprised me was that they still get to dress up during weddings, some people managed to arrange pretty cosy flats in such f-ed up buildings, and you'd barely tell their youth from middle class "brown" youth at the first sight. Of course, they probably wouldn't have all that without financial aid, but even then some people tend to waste the charity for drugs and make it obvious on themselves, here I saw only one visibly stoned person, at least from what was shown, and even him didn't look like a complete mess. After all this district looks like it does have a potential for a good future.

It is vicious circle because there is also problem with no electricity or gas as result of not paying anything. If you ask Roma people living there why do not you pay your rent, they are going to say that they are not willing to pay for the flat with no electricity, gas or clean water, which makes sense, KIND OF, but then you ask the local authority why they are not providing these people with It, their answer is,because they do not pay their rents and bills so they do not get any of that. Vicious circle as most of those families now owe thousands of euros after decades of living there illegally,so they can not pay off their debt to get their water or power or gas to get back on.Also the authorities were especially worried about switching on gas supply again, because of their nature to dismantle everything:cables, copper pipes, windows, anything worthy to sell,so they were worried of possible gas explosions if someone starts fiddling with the copper gas piping...they are very

@@majingilane7730 So, my reply was seemingly deleted for speaking the truth, but I'll post it again. The government DOES help them out. In Serbia, where I live, they get child and social support for every child after the first, if no-one in the family is legally employed(and nobody is, because they would rather leech off of the government and do things that the original commentator mentioned, plus crime.). What they do is make 8 or more children and get almost two average salaries off of that. They also have loads of family up north and west, in Germany and France mostly, who smuggle cars and tech pieces across the border and sell them here for low prices, earning more money than any average citizen could ever fathom. I used to work in a slot club and gypsies that would come in would always be draped in golden neck chains, Gucci and Armani, lose up to 2000 euros annually and they would be the rudest gamblers there(extinguishing cigarettes on chairs, hitting tables and the machines, spilling drinks, yelling, cursing to name a few). When the children I mentioned turn 18, they acquire visas and join in on the "family business" in EU countries. On that note, they also receive more lenient punishments for crimes. Personal example; a gypsy committed armed robbery in my city some time ago, and received only 5 months, while a Serb who I personally know received 3 years. There were no additional offences added to their original charges, either. Ergo, you really shouldn't speak about the things you have no clue about, that you read from tabloid media, orchestrated by people who also have no idea about how things really are down southeast in the good ole' Balkan region.

This vlog was awesome, I take my hat off to you two for travelling to such a place. I was in near tears to see how these people’s life situation and how they are surviving. It reminds me of my days in the NZ Army when I was posted to Singapore and Malaysia at the start of the 80’s the first time I had seen such poverty, but the one thing that stood out amongst those people is how happy they all were regardless of there situation. Love your work bro🎂👍🏽👍🏽😎

I’m impressed by that boy who speaks English fluently. I was born in Presov and I remember my gypsy classmates... They were barely able to read in Slovak.
