I have had to slide the trans under the car on a piece of cardboard then push on the trans jack with my legs while pulling a C6 with a gearvendors OD onto the trans jack at the same time while under the car. Not fun!

Oye. Lots of grunting I bet.
My 4R70W came out of a 98 Ford Explorer. My 75 Gran Torino 351W original flexplate and spacer plate worked with 4R70W.Also my Torino had 2 cross member frame pads.I think the rear pad was for a C6.I was able to the rear pads on the 4R79W. And I have the original explorer cooing lines. Im just going to radiator trans cooler .Never had any problems in the past. Im using the US shift quick 2 controller . Keeping it simple. I have Ford 9inch with 3.0 gear ratio. And I'm sticking with rear drumb brakes . Using Mercon V. Thanks for the great info.

Was the flex plate a 164 tooth? I seem to remember that some 351s had the larger ring gear.

@@AutoRestoMod Yes.When I was researching flex plates I realized mine was already the correct one.
I ran my trans cooler lines thru the Radiator then thru an OEM Ford air cooler I picked off of a F-150 at pick a part.
If you are going from FMX to AOD or 4R70W, the original FMX flex plate should be fine. Ive done both and used the FMX flex plate without issue.

There were two different converter diameters used in 4R70W transmissions. Be sure to use the proper converter.
Lots of good information here, thank you. I agree with you about steel or aluminum lines where possible. The OEMs did it that way for a reason. NHRA limits the amount of rubber fuel line on a car for a reason. You see people pulling flex line the whole length of the car with A/N fittings. That's a lot of money to spend on something you can do with hard lines for a lot less money and in some ways better. Oh, and a trans cooler? Yeah. Just do it. Heat will kill an automatic transmission fast. Count me among those who want to know why you aren't a fan of disk brake swaps. I want the best brakes I can reasonably get on my classic. Modern traffic is too crazy.

When you accelerate particularly with a leaf spring car the diff nose will lift as the tyres bite (equal and opposite reaction) so it pays to run the pinion nose down a couple of degrees so it comes up level.

For me, I've got a 64 Cruise-O-Matic that's just not going to cut it with my build. The options I'm looking at are a 67 C6 (I have) or a 4R75W (don't have). Either are going to take some fabrication in my 64 Galaxie. The 4R75W will require more, but will bring overdrive and programmable transmission parameters. I intend to run 3.70 or possibly 3.89 gears in the 9 inch. I am not thinking of using anything other than the 9 inch rear.
@AutoRestoMod

4R70 might be challenging in the Galaxie at the tailshaft housing. Option would be a Gear Vendors Overdrive and the C6
This is great. I'm planning to do the 4R70W in a 66. I'm curious about what pan you end up going with. I've read that you can swap over an AODE pickup and pan to get rid of that nub on the bottom, vs going with the larger deeper pan you used on the Fairlane swap. Looking forward to more videos on this install. Heck, maybe you can do mine next.

You Were talking about Explorers. Would a 1998 Explorer V8 and transmission go in a 65 fastback mustang? I'm trying to figure all this AOD stuff out.
I have two AODs laying around. One I got with my car and one I got with my engine. I don't know that state of either. Guess we'll find out on first drive lol. Would be interested to see that thermostat controlled external cooler. I've been thinking about doing something like that for a while, but haven't quite figured out all the parts yet

According to the sstuff I read, no. Not sure i the wiring harness is a part of the kit or will have to be purchased seperately.
I'd love to hear why you're not a fan of rear disc brakes on classic cars. Also, thanks for the info on the 4R70W. I just picked one up to put in my 76 Bronco that I am getting ready to start building. I did the AOD swap in my 73 Mach 1, and that was pretty easy, to be honest, although it did require some work to make it all fit and play nice.

Another option for carb guys is full manual valve body for the 4r70w if you don't want the electronics
@donreinke5863

The other option is to use the wide ration 4R70W planetaries and high capacity clutch packs in the hydraulically controlled AOD.
Question, what did you use for a TPS on the wagon I assume it is on the carb, was it the 4100? I would like to keep my 4100 if possible when doing a 4R70W in my 66 Ranchero. FYI after watching your video's on the install on the wagon I hunted down a C6 crossmember I am close to start the project down to the TPS issue.
@SuperBossman9

You can get a tps with a small bracket that fits on the side of a Holley, I picked up one from Summit.
I will not have an electronically controlled transmission. Fortunately, the AOD can be built using wide ratio 4R70W components. Ive done a few of those.

MERCON "LV" (Low Viscosity) MAY NOT "Back-Spec" to older transmissions. ;)
Dropping a 5.0 out of a 96 Explorer into a 65 F100. I've converted it over to carb instead of EFI. I bought a 4R70W out of a 2000 Mustang, it has the correct bolt pattern to fit behind the 5.0. I also got the flywheel and the torque converter from the same Mustang. Just want to know what tooth count and weight on the flywheel? Also, can I theoretically use the torque converter out of the Mustang with the 5.0 or do I need one specific to the 5.0? I just want to make sure I'm using the correct combination of parts to get this to work together cohesively. Thanks.
@AutoRestoMod

Any 5.0 built after 1983 will have a 50 oz. imbalance. So if you have a transmission, flywheel and torque converter from a pushrod 5.0 out of that 2000, it will work.
I am going to be installing a 4r70w in my 1968 Mustang as well. The list is really helpful, however, I can't find some of the parts like the driveshaft from Summit. Would you be able to add part numbers on the list to help identifying the correct parts?
@AutoRestoMod

The list was primarily to allow for pricing. As we install the parts we will list them out.
I am looking forward to this install. I have a 66 mustang with a 351 Cleveland (yes Cleveland not W) narrowed 9 inch and want an auto with OD still deciding on AOD or 4r70w. What do you think?

4R70W, unless you tap Lentech Automatics, is the best way to go with higher horsepower. I'd still go to Lentech for the racing transmissions.
