Some of my viewers asked for the full tutorial video of my Native American Headdress. So, here it is.
You can see the whole playlist of five videos here :

When I was a kid, I had a great admiration for Native Americans and their craft I discovered in movies the french TV broadcasted every sunday night. This build was a challenge for me. I wanted to learn how to make a headdress, overcome all the difficulties and most importantly pay a tribute to the traditions and craft of the Native Americans I admired as a child. I know the importance of the headdress for Indians and the honor it is to have one or wear one, so please don't see in this video any disrespect for the culture or traditions of Native Americans, as I only mean to show respect and admiration for their craft.

This video is the last part of a full tutorial "How to make a Native American Headdress / War Bonnet".
In this part, I finish the assembly of the headdress. As you will seen, I needed to ad some details, fur and leather strips to mount the feathers on the bonnet.
This build took me around 30 hours. It was a first for me, but I'm really happy how it turned out. I love it and I hope you will like too !

the one I made for the Order of the Arrow Ceremonial Induction / Dance Team took me around one month to assemble...labor intensive, but very satisfying..I used a old Dan Beard design in one of his awesome DYI books...Back in the day, everyone thought every native Indian tribe wore war bonnets!!! I modified mine to the REAL Eastern Woodland Native headress..Dan Beard had good eyes when it came to detailing...I was complimented by the Mattaponi Chief for getting it "right"....Think of a "crown " design, with a ring of feathers and shells replacing the beads...Beads did not come into the picture until the English / European influence..thus the beads were called "Trade Beads"..New York as we know it , was traded by a trunk of beads and trinkets...yep...look it up....Old "Uncle Dan" was a very early defender of Native American rights ...Seton, another early leader of U S Boy Scouts could not stand Dan Beard for his outspoken support of the American Natives and his wish to "Keep the Scouts in the woods" enthusiasm...Seton later left the Scouting movement after words with James E West, the first Chief Scout of BSA...

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure that Native Americans did not have superglue. Liked the rest of the video

So, after watching this guy go through all of this, to document and share the making of this beautiful piece of art, you're going to question the materials that he used while doing it? About some glue issue? That's all that you could think of to say to him about it? I may be wrong, but I think that you're an asshole.

Hello, I have been obsessed with this video since I was little (I love Native American culture) and this masterpiece put me in awe. But I have always wondered, where do you get those metal disc plates? I would love to make one of these one day and want to know all the knowledge I can. Again your art is such an amazing thing in this world which has inspired me so much.

  • @RedSmith

Thank you for your kind words. I made the metal disc myself with a 3mm thick metal sheet cut with shears and filed to be as round as possible. So glad my video inspired you and I hope it will also help you to fulfill your dream.
