There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

The thing with exercising is, you need to have (1) time to exercise, (2) good food and enough of it - otherwise more exertion just means you starve faster, and (3) recovery - this last is important. You can't work 12 hours a day then workout and expect to recover on 4 hours of sleep. Only the well-to-do tend to have these three things.
I just watched Kissinger, pt. 1 - so the "Nobel Peace Prize" bit hit doubly hard.
The best fitness tip I've ever gotten was to love my workout. If you hate lifting weights in the gym then don't lift because you'll never have the motivation to do it. Find something you love to do that's active, for me it's mountain biking, for you it could be rock climbing. As long as you love doing it you'll never struggle with motivating yourself to do it.

At least the most well known one. There's certainly ones who are moreso but less well known.
1:01:21 Fun fact: corsets, when sized and worn correctly, were not bad for you (or at least not worse than modern shapewear/bras and girdles). This is actually kind of a myth, apparently. In fact, a lot of corsets essentially sort of functioned as bras (in the sense that they would help support the weight of the breasts) and could help keep the back straight. Waist trainer-type corsets (and modern waist trainers, and again, girdles) or corsets laced too tight, were indeed bad for your breathing and digestion and long term/organ health. But most people didn't wear them that way most of the time, and you certainly didn't have to wear them like that/laced too tight. (The pod actually does sort of reference this, so OK.)

Just a note, what is describes is not vaccination, getting poked with cowpox to immunize you from smallpox, but rather variolation.

I had heard it called "inoculation," but maybe that's a more general term.
@DW-xw9pl
8 ай бұрын
@shulamithbond The two techniques are both inoculation but with two different viruses. The Vaccinia (vaccination) virus or the Variola ( variolation) virus. The Vaccinia is a closely related strain to the Variola virus, but unlike the variola virus, it does not cause deadly small pox in humans. Modern vaccines are based on the idea of using less dangerous versions of a disease causing agent to inoculate like Vaccinia inoculation but today we no longer need to find safer viruses in nature but can create our own safer virus fragments.

Oh god, I don't know why, but the story of Bernard's mother just got me in the feels. She tried so damn hard. I wish there were a way to go back and give her the love and help she needed.

Like she did something nearly unthinkable at the time, if she had even the bare minimum support structure available to her, who knows how far her considerable strength could have taken her. But her family was near destitute, likely everyone she knew was in a similarly precarious position and likely if there were any institutions purporting to help, they were likely hell holes of abuse and exploitation at the time, more liable to punish her for being a single mother, regardless of if she is a widow.

@@Daedalus117 I believe the point was to irritate the 'overprotective' father and possibly set up the boyfriend to be her protector later in the movie. Obviously a kid who LOOKED like a boy her age wouldn't fit well so they tried to justify her boyfriend being a grown man. It was a pretty ham fisted way to do it.
Vitamins were not well understood back then so obviously there was no vitamin supplementation. Hence, if you stayed inside all the time and never saw the sun, you became deficient in vitamin D which is really bad for you. If you were a child, lack of vitamin D gave you "rickets" because your boned didn't develop properly. Lack of green veggies and healthy food in general meant a lack of B vitamins, iron, etc. I've worked as an electronics tech and with the long hours, saw maybe one hour of wan sun a *week* that's less than a Death Row prisoner gets. The difference is, I could take vitamin pills. Without vitamin pills, like if they'd never been invented, I can see modern companies having employees being required to be out in the sun for an hour at midday, exercising and getting sun exposure. Thank goodness for modern science and technology! People can be kept indoors for 60 or more hours a week and no nonsense about getting out and getting sun and exercise. That would cut into productivity!
This childhood is like an American version of a Charles Dickinson novel.

A surprising number of Americans' childhoods are like something out of a Dickens novel. For some reason, Dickens' tales of hard times, written as morality lessons in England, are taken to be blueprints for how to run society.

People also typically stop eating when close to death. I assume it is not "instinctive" but a natural result of metabolic functions slowing down or stopping. You wouldn't feel hungry and food would just sit in your inert guts. I assume this is true for most animals. The other one is getting cold.

By the time of Bernarr's vaccination, I'm pretty sure they were using cowpox lymphs instead of actual smallpox. It was still not *safe* compared to modern vaccinations, but it was of course still much less dangerous than actual smallpox
I chose to go into electronics because the one guy I knew who was in that field, was fat. And yes, being fat was very difficult in the 1970s, you had to really be doing something right to be fat. When I joined the Army I weighed less than 100 lbs and drank a *lot* of water to "make weight", I gained weight on that good Army food in Basic Training and well, I never went hungry in the Army. Considering how horrible the economy's been all through my adult life, I should have stayed in the Army for a full career. Electronics has turned out to be pretty much minimum-wage like everything else is these days.

This might be a dumb question, but what exactly is wrong with the weird idea about “a country exercising?” Like the whole “our country would be better if we made mandatory PE a part of our school curriculum”? I’ve seen a lot of those types of comments under videos about old timey exercise clips on Fitness KZread, and that stuff always rubbed me the wrong way, since that’s a weird sentiment to have about exercise. But, it sounds like there’s some context or history that I’m not aware of that may shed light on the problems with that mindset. If anyone has any info or source I could read to learn more about it, please let me know. I’ll try and post stuff I find I’m under hear, if I find anything myself.

Well...later my great cousin used this shit to help pioneer the polio vaccine so in the end a win...??? 😬😬😬 (not at all LMAO)
Eugenics ABSOLUTELY WAS very very popular prior to 1870. Do you know about Plato my good man? Very very very much a fan of Eugenics our boy Plato was! It WAS popular before the 1870s #2 when you get sick, human or animal, you stop eating BECAUSE when you're sick you lose your appetite entirely. when you get sick you don't eat because you just physically can not eat. this is absolutely not some instinct thing for the heard mentality, neither among humans or animals. I like this podcast, these 2 points are absolutely absurd. vaccines? a debatable topic. it's not one that I am sold on.
