Not everyone lives in a melting pot like America is, so it is important to teach kids all over the world about other cultures and races. The majority of people from my country have never seen a black person in their lives, how are they going to know about racial diversity all around the world if they're not taught in school or home about it? It's much better to teach them about it rather than let them be ignorant on the matter for their entire lives.

Ecstasy even if they never saw a black person I’m sure every country is ethnically diverse so include them. It’s not necessarily a black and white or even racial issue. It could be ethnicity as well. And once you know there are people who don’t speak your language or who don’t eat what you eat, then you will be open or meeting ‘the others’ won’t be a big shock.

Loni is 100% correct about middle america. I was born and raised here in Oklahoma and in my primary school all the way to high school we had like 4 Asians, 6 Hispanics and like 8 black kids. Not very diverse AT ALL. I would love for more diverse programs to come to middle America now that I have a kid in elementary school. I teach her about diversity but we should def see it in schools as well.

I think that it is kind of hard because it really depends on where people choose to move. In order for a school to be "diverse," people of different ethnic backgrounds have to actually move to those locations. Every place can't be an NYC. I grew up on the East Coast close to a major NE city so my school was automatically very diverse but I realize that my experience was totally different from someone who grew up in the Midwest and that is understandable. I think like Loni said, that is where TV shows and the Internet can play a role. I watch KZread channels from people all over the world to learn about different cultures and it makes me want to travel to those countries to learn more about the people, their history and their cultures. We are fortunate to live in a time where you can learn just about anything about any culture you want!

We are experiencing alot of gentrification here in the Netherlands. I left Amsterdam, for a town, in the suburbs, so we could have a bigger house, and parking. It has allowed us, to get our kids to music classes, scouting and much more. We pay twice as much per month, but we have the peace of mind, to have the eldest bike to school alone.

I understand what Adrienne was trying to say but the fact is you have more African Americans and Hispanics live in inner cities so the prek class will only have kids from those communities. It's more of an economic issue when parents, who may not have the means, have to pay for Prek classes. It's more economic based because if the families can afford it, then those Prek schools would accept everyone thus making the class diverse!

Because for me... both go hand in hand to lead to a wonderful environment for your kids to learn in... it allows them to get to know all different creeds , colors , races and cultures and live and learn with other kids who can learn to be open and loving to other people of color and cultures as well !

I'm multi-racial but think it would be very stupid to hire someone for the sake of diversity. Qualifications and work ethic should be a priority and the only two things when hiring someone for a job. If people want more diversity then become friends who are opposite political party then them, race, religion, etc. However, don't have it be applied to when it comes to jobs and within the workforce, for I want the most qualified not the least qualified just for the sake of diversity.

Segregation in NYC schools has and still exist too though. I went to Head Start in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (in the 90s when it wasn't as gentrified) in an Orthodox Jewish part of the neighborhood and almost every kid, staff, and teacher was Latino or Black. Went to a public school on the Upper West Side in Manhattan and the only black kids in my Kindergarten class were the kids of a famous director who everyone always wanted to hang out with but equally made disgusting racial jokes at their expense when they were not around and even to their face at times. There were other black and latino kids who were also children of wealthy, successful people living in the neighborhood. Everyone was rich and mostly white. Of the non-wealthy, there were very few black and latino kids and all of us there because we lived in project, rent-controlled housing or children of supers of buildings close enough to the school to get us in. And almost everyone of those kids, rich or not, faced discrimination by the teacher, the staff and the other kids. When the public school process became competitive to get into public middle school and high school the population of black and latino kids at the schools shrunk exponentially compared to the elementary school while the asian and white kids became even more of a majority. There's a lot of reasons for all of this - willful incompetence and veiled, systematic racism/xenophobia by far the largest - and I'm sure the situation is a million times worse for children "lucky" enough to be the few to get a full-ride scholarship to a completely and purposefully non-diverse private school.

Adrienne started talking about the NYC school system and busing kids from certain areas to to desegregate in other school districts and let me tell you, the system is failing at that. My parents worked their asses off to get the home they have and to live in the neighborhood they live in! The schools in my neighborhood had better funding because the taxes were higher and that is the exact reason why my parents lived there. The thing that my mother hates was that they paid taxes for schools that i couldn’t go to because they had to bus me to a different neighborhood which was lower income and the schools were not properly funded. Nothing wrong with giving opportunities to those who otherwise wouldn’t have them but taking opportunities away from other kids? My parents pay high taxes so that we could go to the school in the neighborhood we lived in. It took my mom the first 3 of my schooling to get me in my school I went to from 3rd to 8th grade, and then when it was time to go to high school, they paid for me to go to catholic school because they didn’t want me going to any of the other schools.

Pre-K programs developed and funded by grants and gov are specifically targeted to help kids that come from families that may not be able to offer the kids the tools at home to learn what they need to learn to start kindergarten. The income limits are so that the people that really need it can qualify. So having a diverse classroom becomes difficult due to socioeconomic status of the groups of people in the community. Many people forget that pre-K is not a requirement but a choice.

Of course none of this means that companies lacking diversity are unable to increase productivity. But it's interesting to read about 🙂

The thing is, in South Africa, Pre -School is private and not compulsory, so parents do not have to send their children to school until grade R. I think it may be the same in America. One thing about South Africa, it is a melting pot of diversity. I am coloured, and my son goes to a Catholic School, which has muslims, blacks, whites, Indians, coloureds, you name name it.. and I am dating someone of a different race to mine as well. So I am so happy that my son is growing up with exposure to all types of people , and he loves it as he is learning so much about different cultures and ways that other people live.

When I first started getting my degree in child development I was go to a school that praised teaching diversity. We had to take several classes on and observe schools based on how well they were teaching it. I also was a assistant teacher at “higher end” preschool but we offered tons of programs and scholarships for all kinds of students to attend. We also never had materials that displayed once race or one type of family. We would have community gatherings to support the diversity that the preschool had. That college and preschool was in a town that had a mainly white community and they building on their diversity. I am now finishing my degree in a town that has a primarily Hispanic community and I have been honestly shocked at how little that make that a priority. Personally I did expect a little more being taught about and I can definitely tell a difference in the students.

It’s interesting being an educator on the east coast and as someone who is born and raised in California. The east coast is very similar to what Adrienne was explaining. The hoods are segregated. You can go to a neighborhood and there will just be black people or another one will have just Latinx people. It’s not just white people segregated from everyone else, it’s everyone separated from everyone. You could see the girls who grew up on the west coast didn’t understand. It was very jarring when I moved to the east coast.

Who the heck lives outside the hood would send their children to school in the hood? The hood folks are looking to school their kids outside the hood? People enroll their kids in whatever school they can afford most based on location and curriculum. Diversity in pre-schools? Pre-schools is when everyone gets along most because they are more innocent and content with nap time, play time and colouring. Heck I miss pre-school. Anytime you see a pre-school child displaying certain unseeming behaviour check home.

But nearly all of the little surrounding small towns are predominantly white and very racist. Even in my "big" city, I've seen racism. I cant imagine there being any lack of diversity in cities such as New york! I've always hoped to move to a much larger state. Where I'm from, it's not common to see extremely nice cars. Dating life here is trash LOL! I can say that you can find people that are nicer and genuine. I've literally had the same best friends since elementary. But, as a city in its entirety, there is no hustle or motivation to even move away or "chase a bag". It's almost as if complacency is praised. I can definitely say that lately I've been seeing a change, as my city IS rapidly growing... but I hope the smaller towns in my state change as well.

This show how America has sunk into the racist hole. Diversity in pre-school it use to be kids of all different races at this age was color blind. My mother use to say you can take kids at this age let them play together they see no different but as soon as they grow up the world tell them different. My neighbor 5year daughter told her mother a girl hit her at school,(she went to a private school mostly white )her mom said what color is she ,her child actually look up at her confuse .This happen 20 years ago her daughter back then didn't see different in color. But this diversity training is for what to deprogram children from some of there parent racist words and training at home. This is sad that our children have to be told everyone is the same at this age when years ago they automatic new it.

What’s crazy, is that Adrienne never grew up in the projects like she says. She says it all the time to gain attention and make her story more interesting. Preschool age, they’re still learning and developing. Once they’re old enough to understand, that’s when it should be taught. Not too young because they will forget and not be interested. So when you teach it, make it interesting and unique for the children to understand. But I agree at Preschool’s instead of teaching it demonstrate it. All ethnic dolls and toys, Latin based movies such as coco etc. that could be the early start of it.

Is she talking about the students or the staff? You can't diversify the students, but you can diversify the staff. There's universal Pre-K in NYC, so Pre-K classrooms in DOE public schools would reflect the neighborhood/community. As for daycare, it is dependent on whether you can afford it. You can't diversify a particular daycare unless you provide a significant amount of financial assistance to include families from all backgrounds.

What loni said was right but it wasnt where adrienne was going and didnt apply here. Pre-school is optional and paid for. Its a socioeconomic issue, not an educational one. There is more diversity in elementary, middle, and highshools because those public schools are free, and there are financial options like scholarships for the private ones. Thats why adrienne brought up scholarship and busing which is provided for youth in education phases outside of pre-school.
