Part 5-Model Car Building Basics-AMT 1950 Ford Convertible

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's finally paint day for the AMT 1950 Ford convertible project. I'm also at the one month mark now for this model car. Thanks everyone for watching along!
For the KZread algorithm: AMT MPC Round2 1/25 1/24 scale plastic model car kit building painting Airbrush Tamiya Aoshima Hasegawa Fujimi Revell Johan Meng Full Build HPI Luka Mokei throttle Plamo Plamodel
In this episode I first show the concept of tinting primer before base coat, how to apply the base, apply the bare metal foil (BMF) on small emblems and finally applying the lacquer clear coat. I usually use a 2K clear for my projects but thought that was outside of the scope of this series.
I appreciate all of you that have been following along with this project. If you have any questions or comments I'd love to hear them. If you enjoyed this video make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to the channel so you'll see more of my channel in your video feed.

I’m really enjoying this build series. I like your idea of using the pippets to decant. I didn’t think of that. I did use almost the exact same technique for the badges on the fiero builds I’m working on. I do rattle can most of the paint jobs on my car bodies and use the air brush mostly for detail work. I’ve found that you can get a good paint job from a can but you do have more control with the air brush. I use a similar technique with the cans as with my air brush and found that I don’t flood the details as long as I’m very careful but I can see how it would be much easier to lay a thin paint job with the air brush . Looking forward to more of this series as I’m learning something new with each episode.

Thank you Onix for watching and dropping a comment. It has taken me years to perfect my techniques through trial and error (mostly error). I've found that very thin paint (both thinned and light coats) really makes for a better finish. I see so many people apply way too much paint which causes problems later on with foil, polishing etc. You do good work yourself Onix, I'm glad that I was able to spark some curiosity.

Great installment in the series! I really enjoyed watching your methodology play into your paint process particularly the mixing of acrylics and lacquer. This is something I’ve been wanting to try myself but have held of because I’ve only seen it discussed and not actually done. I also agree about a rattle can never being able to lay down as thin a coat as an airbrush. I thought I wanted to liberate myself from the spray booth this summer by priming outside with a can of Mr. Surfacer, aside from flow control I quickly saw how much primer was being wasted in over spray. I finished the can and went back to the airbrush and spray booth.

Great tip on keeping the base coat as thin as possible. Makes total sense to me. Thanks. I've just started experimenting on a project using Mr Metallic color GX thinned 2:1 with levelling thinner over a black primer. If you keep the air pressure down below 15psi it seems to allow you to get in so much closer with great control over the amount of paint going on to the model. The detail just seems to just leap out at you. No way you could do that with a rattle can. Now I'm going to use your method with building up the clear coat. You've given me the confidence to take my time building up those coats so thanks again for the great advice. Very much appreciated.

I just didn't like the way the paint comes blasting out of the can. I bought myself a Tamiya Spraywork airbrush which is still in use over 20 years later (albeit with a gap of many years before I started making models again this year). I had the airbrush at the time of using the rattle can. I only used it because I needed Old English White which I couldn't get except in the can.

You do amazing work! I'd like to have seen, though, how you got FORD to come out with the BMF, and how you painted the logos on the hood and trunk. I've done okay at that using a toothpick, but not as nice as you have done on that Ford. Thank you for this series.

Thanks for watching. I’ll make sure to focus in on the emblems in the next video. I did use a sharpened toothpick and acrylics paints. I wiped off any excess from the foil.

Wow, That is coming along really nice..I use rattle cans and yeah it's hard..I have to stand about 20" away from the model to get some work like that but that is hard..lol. Also I got your sticker yesterday thank you..and thank you for the words on the note, I agree. It's hard..

Great video James! Love your process. I've never tried clear coating over BMF, though. Do you always do this? Any problems with it down the road? Thanks! I subbed your channel. Cheers.

Thanks for watching James. I find that when you clear over BMF it seals it and you never have to worry about it coming off. Down side is that it isn’t as shiny with clear over it.

Hi James, love the video! Sanding is done after priming and clear coat but what about sanding after painting? I didn't see it in your video and am curious if that's a step to take or why not. Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy, it depends on how smooth your color base coats are. If there is minimal texture and no dust there’s no need to sand between coats.

This video is great and informative. Question I have is while shooting the paint did you have to adjust your air pressure any during any of the painting process?

Thanks for watching! No, I leave my compressor alone at 20psi and adjust my distance thinner and speed of stroke instead.

Thanks interesting. I was thinking of painting a body this way... color and clear for gloss. But ? You mixed Tamiya Acrylic and Lacquer with no compatibility problems ? And used a Acrylic thinner? I have never mixed these paints so its news to me. Did I understand right. BTY Your foil technique seems too easy...maybe we can visit that sometime.

Thanks for watching OD, yes I mixed lacquer with acrylic and the thinner is a lacquer based which makes the whole batch a lacquer. I’ve been thinning acrylics with it for years and will never go back to acrylic thinner. BMF is easy when you take your time and have it settled down securely.

If you did your trim with a Molotov or a Sharpie, could you successfully clear it with Mr Color Clear?

I’ve had sharpie reactivate with clear and run/smear in the past so I quit using it. I don’t recommend using Molotow pens under clear as that stuff never seems to dry completely.
