Part 2 | Working On My Great-Grandfather's Tractor | Ford 601 Workmaster Diesel

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the previous video I picked up my Great Grandfather's/Grandfather's Ford 601 Diesel Tractor and brought it back to my house.
In this video I show the current updates on the project.
Mainly I've been doing a lot of cleaning to make sure I have a good view of what some of the issues could be.
I've slowly been able to take apart some of the panels and have worked on getting some of the paint off. Additionally, I worked on getting the starter mostly sorted out, and have a game plan to fix some of the wiring/solenoids.
Next up I'm hoping to work on the gauges, getting dents out, fixing the hydraulic system and priming most of the panels and parts. (The frame of the tractor is going to be a whole different story.)
Thanks so much for watching, and if you have any advice to offer me, please don't hesitate to leave it in the comments below!
(Also, I did put a new oil filter on it as seen on the seat in the opening. Lastly, I made sure to put some WD-40 on the raw metal parts after the paint was removed to help prevent rust.)

I have a Ford 8N and very soon I will be restoring it and it looks like you are doing just fine with your tractor.. but any auto parts store won't have any parts that you would need and if you have time you can Google the part that you need and I find that I can buy all the parts that I need very cheap on eBay compared to the prices around here where I live ... That my helpful tip and I hope it helps you out...

I don't know if you did this or not, but you'll want to get some zinc additive for the oil. The problem with the 3-point is probably (hopefully for you) the hydraulic cylinders in it, but it could also be that the hydraulic filter is clogged, or pump itself pulsing in pressure (I'm not 100% sure where the pump on those is, but you'd probably at the very least need to pull the radiator to really get to it).

  • @LandonsLaboratory

Never heard of zinc additive, and I definitely don't think I would have thought of it. Thanks for the tip! I'm sure I'll have to consult my manual to find it but I really hope the radiator doesn't have to come off! Haha

@@LandonsLaboratory I've done a little research (I'm a John Deere guy, not much knowledge of Fords off the top of my head), and it seems the pump is inside the transmission, of all places. I'd recommend changing the hydraulic filter first and seeing if that helps, but if that and overhauling the cylinders fail, it's probably the pump

@@LandonsLaboratory The hydraulic pump is on the right side of the engine. Very easy to get to. Wouldn't think zinc additive needed. The pump on these tractors are pretty tough. I don't think you have a pump problem. The lift seems to work pretty well. If you shut the engine off with a piece of equipment lifted does it stay in the air or drift down to the ground? If it goes to the ground quickly it indicates that fluid is getting past the lift cylinder piston o'ring. I think you have an adjustment problem. especially since you had all the linkages apart. You will probably need to take the top cover back off and check the adjustments. There are videos on line that can walk you through the proccess.

One of the biggest flaws with that style of Ford tractors is it has hydraulic fluid tubes that go through the wall at the bottom of the transmission and condensation goes to the bottom of the transmission in Rusts out the tube and causes major flaws with the hydraulic system my dad had this problem on one of his tractors and he had to sleeve it and I’m having the same problem on my 62 2000 You might can look on eBay and find the emblem for the front and the starter buttons always mess up on those tractors you could probably find someone on marketplace parting out an old Ford tractor 8n, 9N, 2n, 600 etc.

Tonight I opened up the hydraulic section and unfortunately it appears to have some rust, gunk, possibly water, and other things. Definitely glad that I'm doing maintenance. Luckily I don't think I have rust in the tube, but we'll have to see when I get back to it tomorrow. And I've definitely been watching Facebook marketplace, but I also have a friend who's dad used to own a Ford tractor dealership. Apparently the parts from when it closed down are somewhere in town, looking forward to that adventure! Thanks for the heads up!

I am familiar with the tube running through the transmission problem. If it develops a hole in it, it will pump the hydraulic fluid into the transmission. It really isn't a hard fix. You can order the tubes on line for less than 100 dollars. Tou don't have to split the tractor. Drain the transmission and hydraulic compartments. Remove the hydraulic pump manifold. Tap the smaller tube (pressure tube) and make yourself a puller with some threaded stock. After you pull it a couple inches it will come out by hand. Lubricate the new tube and tap it in until it is flush with the manifold mating surface. You can remove the transmission cover and make sure it goes into the hole in the rear of the transmission. I've heard of people putting appoxy or other types of sealant on the tube but I don't really think it is necessary. Use your own judgement.

There are brush on paint removers that make paint removal easier. I think one is low impact aircraft grade remover. Brush it on, let it sit and the paint bubbles off. Walmart or any auto parts may sell it. Also NAPA autoparts is a good source for filters for tractors.

  • @LandonsLaboratory

I was using some paint stripper that I picked up at an ACE hardware, but I definitely don't think it's aircraft grade since it didn't do much, if anything, to remove the paint. I'll definitely check it out! And thank you for the filter info, I don't think we have a NAPA in town, but the next town over may have one.

Unfortunately, I don't have a NAPA in my town and was having a hard time (obviously haha) confirming the napa part was the same as the other brands. I was also just starting to work on the tractor and was a bit overwhelmed with all the info I was trying to learn. Thanks for the advice, I hope you enjoyed. 👍

Those tractors came out with a canister type oil filter. It is pretty common to see the spin on conversions. They used the same filter that all the old ford vehicles used. Motorcraft FL1A or Fram PH 8a or the equivalent.
