PART 2: STOP IMPULSE SHOPPING FOR GOOD | Cultivating new mindsets

Part 1: • PART I: STOP IMPULSE S...
Today is part 2 of my 3-part series on how to stop impulsive or excessive shopping for good. These are approaches that have helped me in my minimalism and decluttering journey, so I thought I'd share them with you!

I’ve taken the time to sit down and map out all of the needs that shopping satisfies - yes, style related stuff, but also getting out of the house (precious when I work from home!), walking, creativity, and engaging with the culture (via trends etc.). Then, I’ve mapped other things I like to do that can satisfy these - planning and going for a walk, tracking style blogs/channels more (let’s be real, we can usually recreate trends with stuff we already have). It’s helped get to the root of things a lot!! 😄 Really enjoy your channel

Ok, a great video before Black Friday & Cyber Monday sales. Obviously, thoughtful timing on your part. Those sale promotions arriving in my daily emails (because 6 months ago I Googled a purse or blazer a woman was wearing on line) ugh, I delete them without opening. Next, I'm 50yo & enjoyed shopping with girlfriends once a month back when I was still married. We'd shop, buy, eat lunch, pick up our kids from school, go home, etc. We ALWAYS said "It's so cute on you, get it." Now I shop alone, no one to encourage over spending since I'm a single Mom. I treat myself to 2 or 3 new wardrobe pieces each season. Something I will wear for years. My most recent purchases were a denim jacket with a sherpa lining... I've wanted it for 2 years & it finally showed up in the consignment shop & my 2nd purchase this fall was a black St. John belt with gold buckle ($20) to wear on dressy occasions (from the same consignment store). Our generation loved Mall shopping as an activity. Now I keep a list on my phone of wardrobe pieces I need to replace & if my upscale designer consignment store doesn't have it, I walk out empty handed. Limiting it to only 2 or 3 items each season, & if it's not on my list leave it at the store seems to work. Buying 2nd hand is still expensive, but if it's something timeless & on my list I don't feel guilty at all. I enjoy it & use it, which should be why we bought in the first place. Impulse shopping seems like a temporary emotional thing. I've spent time & money in therapy after divorce to figure out the true reason I bought $3,000 Celine bag after divorce on a teacher's salary. (Insane revenge against husband. But it only punished my bank acct. Sold it & only recouped $2,200... costly lesson.) Anyway, good video, much appreciated this week particularly.

Thank you for sharing your story. I especially appreciate the part about the Celine bag as I am a purse buying addict. I am working on it. Thank you 🌳

I love that idea of connecting with people by active listening and engaging rather than through stuff. In general, I love the idea of mindset shifts - such an important thing to learn! Thanks for sharing!💗

I really needed this video! I went a bit crazy with shopping this year due to pandemic + new lIfe of being a mum. I promised myself I will buy not so much clothes anymore

I realize that my want for shopping is oriented toward trying to find clothes and to achieve a certain appearance that I aspire to. I want to look like the Pinterest models not just own the clothing that they are wearing. I treat myself like my own doll or “avatar” when I dress myself . when I put my makeup on I’ve started to look at myself in an objective lense instead of emotional. So I don’t NEED the expensive designer versions of everything to achieve the look I’m going for, most times I can shop my closet to put together clothing in the same look as the Pinterest models and focus on doing my hair and makeup the same way. Makeup also doesn’t need to be expensive it just needs to get the job done to achieve the same look. So I use dollar eyebrow pencil, I use a cream dollar lipstick as blush and dollar mauve lip pencil as well as dollar clear lip gloss to achieve that same “glossier” natural model look that looks expensive. I focus on taking care of my body and my personal hygiene instead of shopping. I use the same hair styling tools I’ve used for over ten years now. I use dollar hair spray to make my hair look volumized and fluffy as though I have a blow out. I glue on my own cheap “acrylic nails” and people think I pay to have my nails done. You can be dirt poor but still look rich and put together based on how you just style yourself.

Wonderful advice, as always. I think that after decluttering and achieving an airier, organized space, “not buying” the tempting thing is a pleasure in itself. I think of my home that will stay roomy and uncluttered, of my closet that will stay full of well-loved, often worn pieces... and that’s a positive feeling that helps stave off impulsive acquisitiveness sometimes. Choosing a kind of meditative peace instead of exciting stimulation.

Very timely video series before the holiday season Elin! I love mindset shifts for longterm habit changes especially around shopping and consumerism. I was a shopaholic when I burned out in healthcare and realizing that the quick dopamine hit of a new purchase was not fulfilling or bringing true happiness was eye-opening back in 2015. Having the mindful pause of how an item will bring us joy before bringing it into our home is so important.

Great video! I am enjoying your channel. I have been doing a lot of decluttering because my husband and I want to downsize in a few years. When I’m tempted to buy something I think about if it will be around for a long time or will end up in the back of my car on its way to the donation center in a year or two. This helps me choose not to buy.

This is helpful to me as well. I went on a BINGE a few years ago and most of those things ended up either returned & now I wish I would have kept one of the items but as I had purchased so many things at once I literally couldn’t think straight, or what I did keep I ended up selling eventually. I only kept one item from that massive binge. Such a pain going through the process of returning and eventually reselling items, not to mention loss of money.

The most helpful tips I’ve heard is replacing shopping with another hobby. I’ve tried to replace that time with decluttering bc god knows photographing, measuring writing descriptions, posting, managing listings and taking it to the post office and shipping it all takes a ton of time. Also what’s been even more helpful since I actually do get a ton of joy from dressing myself and curating my space (it’s my creative outlook) is really just planning planning planning and thinking and more planning and researching on my style and that postpones a lot of planning. Also just being poor helps bc everything I really want to buy I can’t afford and I’m not gonna settle for anything just bc it’s cheap. I’m either getting the expensive thing that’s exactly what I want and is perfect or I’m getting nothing. So obv i don’t buy anything bc I have no money

Hey Elin, I am slowly on my path to decluttering my physical and mental space; in a few of your videos, you mention you have been listening to podcasts and reading about the process. Do you have a few of them you could recommend? Perhaps an idea for a future video?

I don't think I have the shopping gene. It completely stresses me out, especially for clothing and shoes. Guess I should consider myself lucky.

Have you seen the movie In Time? I changed the way I think of shopping so now when I'm looking at something I want to buy I work out how many hours work I would have to do to pay for it. Is this item worth a whole days work? Or even is this item worth a whole week of work? Most of the time no it's not.

I like that you address the permission-inducing thoughts. It’s really something we have in this day and age. At the point we reward ourselves for nothing, just living. Sometimes I say to mu bf or a friend « I’m not going to buy that because X reason » and then it’s almost as if they are the little devil on my shoulder saying: but it’s ok if you do. You have enough money. Yolo, etc. And I’m guilty of that as well.
