This is exactly the sort of content that KZread was meant for. A helpful, detailed tutorial on a DIY project that might seem easy but has a lot of intricacies to watch for
These videos were honesly sooo helpful in restoring my barrel. Thank you so much for making them!
Thanks, my cousins a cooper in Elgin so I've just started work on a couple barrels he's given me
I was skimming through this to see how you stoppered the holes in the sides, but the stoppers just suddenly appear. I have 4 Jack Daniels barrels that I want to use outside as rain barrels. No sanding or refurbishing, but they do have to hold water. I can put the spigot in one of the holes.
Great series of videos...ya'll have the most in depth process for what my husband and I are looking to do! We just came across a bourbon barrel that we want to use as a patio table. What grit of sand paper do you recommend using if we plan on keeping the original character (before coating with spar urethane)? Thanks in advance! 😊

Hi Mariela! We appreciate that. Thank you! I would probably just take a 120 medium grit sandpaper and sand it by hand, just taking off some of the surface dirt and grim. That will clean it up a bit and give the poly a better surface to bond to. Good luck!
Very helpful vids, especially love the pics of different finished products since I'm trying to figure out what level of sand/stain to do. Orbital sander was taking a while, have you ever sandblasted one with maybe a walnut shell media?

Edit. Couldn't get the hoops off so used orbital sander for large parts and sand blaster for the nooks and crannies. Worked pretty well
I just came across a Buffalo Trace barrel. If I used 240 on an orbital, will it be super smooth but also retain original character or should I get different grit..? Thanks in advance
I will be using my palm sander to clean up a couple of wine barrels. No disassemble will be needed. What grit do you recommend for the wood?
Currently sanding a barrell, the only thing that makes a dent is 40 grit on a belt sander even then, ive went through 4 belts, 8 hours work of seriously digging in and still 1/4 left to go, and im only sanding so the grey weathered wood shows a little with bare, and its like 5mm to get to see any bare wood everyone i see gives it a little rub with a palm sander and its done, this is a serious undertaking. Tried every other type of sander and grit, nothing would even scratch it, this does but even still, what the hell is it made off? Also a massive request, i havent seen anywhere on the internet what to do with the inside of the barrel, was dealing with halfed barrels for planters, was a struggle to get the dank smell out of it, or how to take the lids off, etc, if there was videos on that itd be amazing.

Hey Paddy! Wow, that's a lot of sanding. You must be sore after that! The barrel you found must have been very weathered. The more weathered, the deeper through the wood that the moisture can affect it. The barrels we have just have surface stains and darkness that can be pretty easily sanded off. But sounds like you're almost there, so keep it going! I'll be working on some videos of the other topics shortly. Stay tuned!
What do you use the plug the hole at the front?
How many sheets did you use on an orbital sander I am like 10 sheets in on palm sander
Can you sand the rings with the same sander as you use for the barrel?
Do you sand the top and bottom of the barrel too? If so how do you preserve the stamping on it?

Hey Jarvis! We typically do sand the full barrel clean and remove any markings. If you want to keep the markings, just do you best to lightly sand, or maybe even just clean with a damp cloth. Then be VERY light with the stain so that you can still see it! Or use a light colors stain, like a Natural.

@@MysticBarrels I'll try that, thanks. I bought the provincial stain as recommended so that might be took dark and it might just drown the stamp out anyway
Doesn't it matter that you're sanding against the grain / boards? (for lack of a better word choice)
You remind me of actor James Rebhorn

Your sound on your videos is awful. You need a wireless mike.
