Cool sled. Terrible war to tow it. First thing I do with the old indys is fuel lines filter and fuel pickup. Clean carbs with new gaskets and check boots for cracks. Very sweet old survivor you have there

It was a huge mistake towing it that way. Lesson learned. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Kevin, First off I want to offer my condolences to you and to Joanne's family. That would have been awesome for you to have taken her for a ride on her old Trail Indy completely restored. ... This is a great old machine. Polaris first introduced the "Indy" chassis in 1980. They produced basically the same chassis until 2007. The Indy was offered in many models with many different engines. There were many refinements but it was pretty much the same design. None of the other sled manufacturers were able to produce a chassis that had such longevity. The Trail Indy was there mid level model. It offered good ride, good handling, and a bullet proof engine that would propel the sled to about 75 MPH. ... You have done a great job at getting this running. Just wanted to offer a few comments. Remember this is a 2 stroke engine. There is no oil in the crankcase. All of the engine's lubrication comes from the oil that is mixed with the gas. ... You commented on the fuel tank outlet being so high on the tank. There is a line on the inside of the tank that goes from the outlet fitting to the bottom of the tank. Don't touch the inside line unless there is a problem. If you break the line you will probably have to remove the tank to fix it. ... I never saw that you removed the needle and seat out of the carbs. I think you were having difficulty removing the float pins. Take something with a point like a small nail or a scratch awl. Hit the pin on the non flanged end and it should pop right out. A lot of the carb needles have a rubber tip. If the needles in this carb have rubber tips, I would recommend replacing them because of their age. ... I would also recommend rebuilding the fuel pump because of age. I think it's a 2 port Mikuni pump. The rebuild kits are about $20. ... If you don't have any success with the brake master cylinder, you may want to replace it with a used one. There are a lot of people parting out Indy chassis sleds. I think they used the same master cylinder for years. ... Most of the replacement parts for this sled are available aftermarket. I'm not sure you will have much luck buying anything from a Polaris dealer. ... Best of luck with this project. Looking forward to seeing your Part 3 video. Take care, George

Hi George. You are a wealth of information! Wow. I learned a lot. Thank you. I think you're right about the carbs. I should pull the needle and seat. They are easy to pull off so should be an easy job. Good point about the fuel pump! I did learn that as I went along. I think I might look into an oil pump rebuild too. If that fails Im in big trouble! I actually just today bought new brake parts. I am really struggling to find rebuild kits for it but was able to find an OEM diagram from a 1985 and get the U packing seal, O ring and a washer. The spring is still good and there's nothing else left to replace. I thought everything looked good in there but even with the brake line disconnected from the reservoir zero fluid will pump out. The U packing was very loose and took a lot of convincing to get it stuffed back into the master. Right now it only starts on starter fluid but once it's warm it goes to town. I don't think the choke is working properly. I hope to have part 3 up in a few weeks! Thanks again! Take care

Correct, drain plugs are for what you did. Your running premix & if the oil pump is working you might have to drain it again. And get some new plugs. 😉

Thanks! I topped the tank off with about 5 gallons of 91 non ethanol. So with the premix I added I’m prob running 200:1 ha ha. Time to replace the plugs!

Hello. Sorry I just saw the comment. Thank you. I could use some help on the brake! Master cylinder is shot. Bought aftermarket lever and master cylinder but can’t get it to adapt to the line. Trying TJ find a solution. I also think I need to go through the carbs again as I only have one cylinder firing

Suppose I should have waited to end of video before commenting lol you got her going!!! But still I'd say if your still getting lots of gas out of bottom of crankcase I'd say fuel pump diaphragm is bad or needle an seats are sticky!

Hey there watching your video an I'd say your fuel pump diaphragm has gonna bad an she now sending gas into the bottom of crankcase through the crankcase pulse line which is to send pressure to your fuel pump so she can send gas to carbs! I'd get a fuel pump gasket kit an retry with carbs, also if the needle is stuck open shes sending to much gas theres alot of possibilites when digging into something that's been sitting years believe me I know!

Hi Kevin glad to see another Snowmobile video up I know the last one was about a month ago but I've been waiting for this because I couldn't believe that you couldn't get that thing running when you first started messing with it. I thought for sure is good as that thing looked you would have had her up and running very quickly. It is a shame about the 94 year old lady that is for sure but that is what is going on with these times unfortunately. I know I have a lot of health issues myself that keeps me from doing things that I would love to do like owning a snowmobile like you got, LOL. Never had a chance to ride one but I hear there are ball I've been on motorcycles and all kinds of different things my whole life definitely a bunch of Two Strokes that's for sure and I miss those days. There would be nothing like a pack of rd350 Yamahas or rd400 Yamaha that sound of Buzzing Bees. Anyway I understand that that particular snowmobile was probably one of the best ones ever made and the fastest. The motor actually resembles my experimental Titan 500 Suzuki back in the day I should have held on to that bike because I have not seen one like that anywhere. As it had the regular shifter in the particular place they usually are but it also had a shifter up on the case that will let you run quarter mile gears or high gear in all five gears. If you ever spot one of those you better grab it! Not sure what state you're in I live in Ohio myself man oh man I can see myself cruising on that right now. Take care my friend many blessings to you and your family.

Hello. Thank you for the nice comment! They are a lot of fun. Very much like a motorcycle but they flip over much easier!! I try to do as much as I can now while I’m younger and still have my health. I do a lot of this for my mental health mostly. It is satisfying to me and I enjoy it. I’m glad it got it running. Just have to do a few odds and ends and it will be on the snow hopefully next week! You take care!

To me it seems like there was a whole lot of fuel on the bottom of the base of that engine. That’s the reason why it’s running like that without the carbs.

  • @allensnook7760

Yup as others have said its a two stroke the bottom bearings n seals get there lube in the pre-mix gas.probably why it didnt run till you flushed out old buildup of over oil and gas.i agree may want a fresh vacum pump n lines to push fresh gas into cylinders.dont you just hate no electric starters on them.that and most have no reverse as well,i guess it was a time when men were men.very nice that u honored the original owner.snooky pa.

Very bad way to pull a snowmobile wrapping the strap through both skis it clenches the tips together and binds and bends the linkage, hook straps up individually to each ski. Nice sled ! Good work.
