The fact that tamil cinema didn't have parallel cinema allowed it to experiment a lot even 30 years before...experiment in stories, music, film making as a whole
In Malayalam there was clear distinction b/w mainstream and parallel movies. It’s only at start of this century both merged gradually and came to known as ‘new gen’ movies.

Love what Basil said and it's very practical. A film should connect with reality of people or situations that filmmaker is informed about. Thats the best and honest way to make films and if nationwide audience connects to it due to stories being universal then it's just a bonus. 2018 is an example as it worked well mostly in Kerala as well as few states but if its not resonated on a larger scale then it's audience not being informed. As a filmmaker just being consistent that eventually the films will earn more audience as time goes is more important than falling for the "pan india" trap. Distributors are also not informed that not every film comes out of the same template that X,Y,Z film is pan india success so one should promote and give more screens. Disappointed that "pan india" films are being viewed as formula that works instead of just promoting good films.
Nona, can you give your take on what happened to 2018 ? bcus I thought it would be the next word of mouth PAN India success like Kantara, i took my neighbours for the Hindi dubbed one and whole theater was empty on a Sunday, did they even recovered their Hindi Dub cost ? .. I am genuinely disappointed it just got rugged under OTT with no buzz at all,
