I attended the high-end section CES at the Alexia Park in 2004 -- when Alon introduced his mini-monitor speaker. I must have visited his room five or six times over the three days I was there. For me, it was both a revelation and a show-stopper, and I have never forgotten that wonderful experience. Some day, if the stars align, I would like to own the M2s.

Interesting tour. Between the time I had the analytical tools as a freshman in engineering school and the time I used them to understand how woofer/enclosure systems works mechanically was 25 years. The model explains all of them regardless of type. The two tools that are useful is what is called Newton's second law of motion applied to forced oscillation (physics) and the ideal gas laws (chemistry.) The reason it interested me was because I wanted to understand how Edgar Villchur's acoustic suspension principle worked and why it was so successful producing deep bass without distortion from a small enclosure. Villchur himself was not an engineer and never fully understood it. It could have been called a pneumatic suspension. Newton's second law used this way is useful for many applications such as explaining how the suspension of a car works. The three factors that matter are the moving mass, the spring constant, and the damping factor. Most speakers today use light moving mass woofers, rely on the speaker's inner suspension the spider and outer suspension for both the spring constant and damping and also for the same function a port of some kind. This results in bass that is highly variable, usually has a significant peak at its port tuning frequency and falls off rapidly at 24 db per octave below that frequency which is effectively its lower usable limit. At some frequencies the air moves through the port easily creating no back air pressure on the cone. At other frequencies it is very difficult to push air through it creating a lot of back pressure. Turbulent air flow at the inlet and outlet of the port creates the chuffing sound typical of ported designs. To mitigate that the port is often flared to smooth the transition from high pressure inside the port to low pressure outside. The acoustic suspension principle relies on a heavy higher mass cone, the difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of the enclosure provides most of the spring constant (the restoring force to the cone) which is independent of frequency. The secret I came to understand was the damping factor. I guessed it and the first time I removed the woofer of an AR2a I knew I was right. It was filled with fiberglass or mineral wool or some similar fibrous material. It's not for absorbing cabinet vibrations, it's there to create an aerodynamic drag by making the woofer work to push and pull air between the fibers. The aggregate surface area of the fibers is enormous. The friction is lost as heat for the same reason the space shuttle heats up reentering the earth's atmosphere. The damping force is directly proportional to the velocity of air independent of frequency. So mass, damping factor, and spring force are independent of frequency. That means the resonant frequency F3 and resonant magnification Q can be adjusted to whatever you want it to be. Unlike other designs they are independent of frequency and amplitude within their range of operation. The price for low F3 and low Q is low efficiency. When the damping factor is adjusted to 0.707 you reach critical damping, the lowest F3 without a resonance peak. Above 0.707 you get a peak in the frequency response. Below 0.707 you get a faster rolloff below F3. This design was so successful it became the reference standard for bass reproduction in the 1960s. Medical schools used it to teach students heartbeat sounds. At critical damping FR falls off at an equalizable rate of 12 db per octave so within its power handling capacity so the FR can be extended downward.. My guess is that this is the secret sauce that makes the Magico speaker able to produce such deep bass.

Magico speakers are not deep bass producers because they are sealed and while you have a very strong back ground from the science side the practical side is very lacking. Sealed enclosures give up sensitivity vs vented and has more distortion in the bass vs their vented counterparts , the trap air adds ( spring ) mass , this kills transient speed which is also obvious when listening, when port tuning by design you can easily have your port cut off tuned to the lowest frequency extreme for maximum bandwidth especially with multiple bass drivers. Magico is using 3 woofers typically to produce the same dynamic output of A single bass reflex driver . Doubling of driver surface area increases sensitivity and lowers thd , if you were to compare a properly designed vented multi driver enclosure it gives up nothing To a sealed enclosure ..! As to Jays setup he sits against the rear wall were the bass is loaded up in chairs that cup his ears , he is having a positive situation due to his combination and improved setup knowledge , his set up will not necessarily produce this same result in another room setup situation or a chair with distance from the rear wall etc .. Regards

@@audiohertz2341 I try to never argue with audiophiles. They know much more than I do including those who become manufacturers and the arguments often wind up in flame wars. I attribute this to their passion for their equipment where to me these are just machines. I save my real arguments for people who deal with something that matters to me, physicists. They are finally coming to the same conclusion I came to nearly 50 years ago, they don't know anything. Small wonder every one I ever knew of or met including my college roommate for 2 years is crazy. All those equations tell you what will happen but not how. Less than 10 years out of school when I realized ultimately I didn't understand how anything works at the quantum level. It was no comfort to realize neither did anyone else.

Very interesting part when he mentioned that sense of air is noise. That also made me doubt if the B&W 801 d4 speaker is really a close alternative to the lower end models of Magico, because of the motor basically is being put in a aluminum tube which most likely dramatized the noise a lot more,; creating more air.

@@jaysaudiolab For S7 owners I see that as a positive, for 2 reasons. There is nothing Magico can do to make S7 significantly better, and if a Mk2 came out the resale value of Mk1 would be diminished. It's a win-win for S7 owners.

I heard the A3 and A5 - the A5 was awful. Maybe the electronics was not a good match but I felt like it was very fatiguing.

Aluminum is for manufacturing aircraft & tin foil. Regardless of price, speakers are only as good as they sound, so let's hear them...less talk & more rock. Diffraction theory needs proof.

//long but please read// I call for 1on1 battle with a polish brand ZetaZero orbital Ref. which can play down to 12Hz (due to woofer xmax of 100mm! yes, not ten, one hundred mm) and can take 2,500W per channel and has omni ribbon build with insane materials (not your typical RAAL). Beat that, Magicians ;) Jay, do a "discussion" panel with both designers for 1 hour - and we will see who put more technical work into each design. Let them fight with audio engineering arguments. This will be the battle of the titans!

Jay can you please upgrade your camera and audio setup? These videos are just terrible in terms of quality. I appreciate you giving us a look into magico... but please give us better quality so we aren't cringing at artifacts.

@@gigi4747 First my apology, I mean no disrespect. It's coming from a place of passion. I love my audio, and Jays KZread channel. He's very articulate and funny...Especially when he wanted to lift that Gryphon amplifier 😯. I'm a former DJ and record producer and one of the pioneers of Hip Hop. But we all know a DJ system is much different than a home audio system. Sorry I'm telling my age now. But anyway, when I'm watching these videos when components are part of. I want to see the product. It just seemed like in the beginning you were very apprehensive to pan down on the sub-woofer. I kept saying go down go down further. We can always hear the conversation even if you pan down to the product. Personally, I wanted to see the size of that beast next to the human body. Like when Jay was showing us that huge Gryphon amp. But anyway, it's just my opinion. One ❤

It was ME who made the decision to choose that song. YES - I AM YOUNG and love upbeat music. I don't spend my night listening to audiophile music. Audiophile music does NOTHING for my heart. It's simply a tool i use to evaluate components. I think of it as a test tone to see if a driver is working.
