Part: 03 - Motherload Carpenter’s Chest Finale with Price Reveal!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey party people, we’ve finally reached the big finale of this box/chest, including the price reveal!
This week we’ll go through the final two levels which include mostly woodworking chisels and wood carving tools, and finally the collection of wood planes in the very bottom of the chest.
My apologies for this one running a little long, I hope it didn’t feel too rushed. I said I’d try to get through it quickly but still ended up covering pretty much everything. Hopefully I can figure out some better planning should a find if this caliber ever comes along in the future.
It probably won’t, but you never know! 😏
Thanks to everyone for hanging in there, thanks for all the support and kindness in the comments, thanks to the early subscribers, as well as the new ones and thanks to those just stopping by for a casual view.
Be sure to like, share, comment and subscribe, and as always…
Have fun scrounging! 🤘🏽

At 34:34 that device with a file in it is a tool called a saw jointer! its used to level all the teeth across a saw when doing maintenance before sharpening

Nice toolbox and and some great contents. My Great grandpas toolbox had a rack built into the lid to hold a full set of flat chisels. Probably 15 chisels of different sizes.

Such a great idea, I’m going to build my own someday soon and that’s would be a great way to store them!

I’m guessing that the Geo. Lincoln is an owners mark. Makers marks for wooden planes usually have a rectangular field with raised letters. Also, wooden plane makers would many times buy the iron from a different company (ex. Moulson).

I am so jealous it is hard to watch your video. I would have given the man double his asking price, this is an incredible find. Best of luck, although you don't seem to need it. ; )

Its is rare I have this kind of luck but occasionally I’m in the right place at the right time. I would have paid him more as well, but it was all I had to offer. He was happy, and so was I and that’s the best outcome after all. Now I have a lot of work to do cleaning and sharpening everything! Thanks for watching! ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Jason that was a nice lot and the price was really good! Love the Marples and the one with a foot is probably a foot print brand. I was just asking around at the flea market for those metal file handles. You should give wood working a go while you got those tools there. Take it easy!

I definitely have plans for woodworking, I don’t know how good at it I’ll be, but I’m not afraid of making firewood out of perfectly good lumber either! 😏 Thanks George for watching, I appreciate it a lot! 🙌🏽

I'm a wood carver and you should do well on the carving chisels. All of the tools in the box were cool and told a story but the shiner was the chest in my opinion.

I’m definitely holding onto a set of carving tools for myself, I don’t have many and this was sort of a windfall for me in that regard. I agree on the chest, it’s the heart of the whole thing really. 🙌🏽

Watched all three! Awesome old tool Haul👍 that Chest is easily a $200 in good shape. I really dig the Old original Box’s for the Dunlop’ stone and others. Those actually value pretty good. Rare to find those. Just a great bunch of old tools. Some of those chisels are sweet. It’ll keep ya busy for a while! I subbed your channel!

Thank you for subscribing, I really appreciate it, and I agree they’re very nice stones to find in good shape. I honestly don’t think I can pick a favorite here, there’s just too many quality items I don’t often run across. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Around 23:00 is a “footprint” brand tool. UK brand, 1960s?

The file hokder is an implement to top off a saw, can't remember what its called in English. You ise it to make all the teeth of a saw have the same hight. After that you'd normally resharpen the teeth and give the saw a new set.. Cool find!

I had a feeling it was saw related, I actually have another one that has a patent date cast into it but no other markings. I finally pulled it out yesterday to compare the two. Thank you for the assist! 🙌🏽

I work in both leather and wood. The tool at 11:20 looks to robust to be a edge beveler for leatherwork. It has a much higher chance being a cornering tool for round overs in wood. I've never seen one that looks exactly like that but stanley used to make one back in the day and veritas still makes cornering tools.

The narrow but tall and thick chisels are known as mortising chisels or pig stickers. The stubby chisels may have been longer at one point like a paring chisel, but in their current size are considered butt chisels The "curved" chisels are all carving gouges. A lot of companies numbered them from #1 to #11. #1 being flat and #11 being a V gouge or veiner. Addis is one of the great ones, so is H. Taylor (Henry Taylor). You've got one heck of a great haul with all the tools you've gotten from this chest. Well worth cleaning and if you're looking to sell, most will likely garner about $25-$50 each. Yes each! The one's with badly cracked handles will obviously be less. The flat piece of steel with Henry Disston engraved in the middle, might be a straight edge. It seems way too thick to be a saw. I could also be wrong, but my gut says, straight edge. At 34:20 The "some kind of file holder" is a saw jointer. You place a file in, where it is located already and you place it over the teeth of your hand saws and file down the teeth when sharpening. It gives you a straight surface to start from and you can recut your teeth from there. 42:30 those are all kinds of moulding planes. It looks like the first one you picked up is a grooving plane. They will all create either some sort of moulding shape, groove, or create hollows and rounds. I hope that helps you. The box would be great if it were put back into service. They aren't cheap.

Definitely super helpful, thanks so much! The saw filer makes sense now that you say it, I’d never have thought of that on my own without seeing it or having someone explain it. The moulding and grooving planes I sort of knew about but rarely see them in groups this big. Most of the time they’re disregarded at sales, but I think I’ll try them out and hopefully get different results than the pre made ones at stores. We’re doing some remodeling and it would definitely be cool if I could have something a little different. My main draw to the box is the carving tools, I only had a few beaters until now. I think everything here will be put to use again, that’s always my goal. If I can’t use it, I’ll get it into the hands of someone who can. Thanks again! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
