Parrot UV Lights | Are They Safe & Worth It? | TheParrotTeacher AD

Hello parrot fans,
This week's video looks at using UV lights with our birds at home. I investigate their benefits, how to set them up, their pitfalls & also discuss our own experiences using one.
Using UV lights with parrots has had some controversy recently, so I hope this video clears things up for you all!
I'd like to give a big thank you to Arcadia for kindly sending us a UV light to test for this video!

    Before I got my cockatiels, I found out about the lamp and got it- in Finland wintertime there is many many days, we don't even see the sun. So it's really important! Luckily they are healthy and active creatures all the time 😅

    The problem with most lamps is that they dont include the cable management and light safety adjustments from the get-go which i think should be industry standard for sth geared for the incredibly fragile birds and parrots they are produced for! Their installation is also often not made for the distance that gets the birds their benefits and instead for the humans benefit in their home. Its frustrating. I managed to find a brand that had a stainless steel cable around the cable and a grit in front of the light just in cage with other safety adjusters optional if needed (included!!) and since then ive been side-eyeying arcadia disappointedly for not including that despite having the same price point and company size as the other one.

    Honestly, you aren’t wrong in your observations. The quality of the light and reflector itself from Arcadia is great but they definitely could include some more elements to make it easier for the end user and for easier safety management!

    This is also my problem, our Eclectus already demolished a lampkit, shorted the whole house out and burned her beak. The Arcadia sets are nice, but very "fragile" when you have large freeroaming psittachines.. 😮

    Really looking forward to hearing more about how UV helps partially sighted birds! I have a blind, chronic egg laying cockatiel. She has been laying every month for the last 2 years. Bought a UV lamp to help manage her condition but haven't been using it so much as wasn't sure how best to use it! If you could link me to any research/info would appreciate it!

    Sadly this isn’t something that has research behind it only what I’ve noticed from consultations and from discussion with other owners! The theory is if they have any sight at all even shadows the uv helps them see at least a little! It’s had a lot of anecdotal success so far!

    Thank you for this! I bought a UV lamp for my cockatiel after we moved downstairs to the basement apartment where he gets very little natural light. Until I can get him outside more in the summer months, it seems to be doing the trick and keeping him on a regular activity schedule. Thankfully I haven't heard or read any of the negativity and I think I'll continue to avoid it. Thanks again!

    Probably best as much of it is scare mongering or due to improper usage of the products! If it’s from a good brand and you use it responsibly it’s a great addition, especially for your situation!

    Hi Everyone-- Happy to see this video. Very informative!! After researching I got one for Spidey. Wanted to keep her away from the windows since I can feel drafts coming thru them. I got one that the cord is wrapped with flexible metal so no chance for a Conure to bite thru and get electrocuted. I am going to see about leaving them on for a shorter time during the day. She can be quite cheeky at times.Will see if it makes that better.I'll let you know!! As always Thanks for the great videos!!!!

    Thank you for this! We noticed when we stopped using one that our bird started overpreening and seemed a bit hormonal. We took it away for the summer, hoping to take him outside most days, but then the temperatures started soaring and there were fires nearby. When he missed over a week of UV light, his behavior changed for the worse, so we're back at it! The tips here are really helpful.

    I have a photo sensitivity condition so I’m unable to have any uv light around. I learned budgies rely on uv light to find mates which makes me very upset that I was unaware of this before I got my budgies. I’m concerned about my birds, I do give the vitamins but I am considering having a uv lamp that I could have on for certain amount of time while I’m not in the room since they need it but it’s life threatening to me.

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    @TheParrotTeacher

    Ай бұрын

    Obviously it’s a major concern for you and understandably! Regarding vitamins there are other ways to provide vitamin d for them. For example being out in sunlight for a while or foods that have it in them! As for their vision yes they do see in that spectrum (I have a video on that topic) but they can get on fine with normal light too. You could consider the option of having one on for limited periods but do consider your own safety too!

  • @partyofnone159

    @partyofnone159

    @@TheParrotTeacher Right I can look into foods that could help them! Yeah, it’s a bit complicated, I wouldn’t say the lighting in my home is normal since it only puts off roughly 1-2% uv (I have a device that reads uv rays) and you have to be basically touching the light bulb to feel that mild uv. My birds aren’t blind I’m sure but I do think it’s more like trying to constantly read or navigate with only faint light which is not good for humans long term so I doubt it’s good for birds. Gonna definitely look into what I can do for them without risking my health and safety, I want to give my birds the best life I can! I’ll check out that video! I’ve been trying to find out more about how birds are affected and need uv light but it’s hard to find any real information out there. Thank you for the information! I appreciate it a lot!

    Any thoughts on the amounts of UV radiation from these T5 lamps? For reptiles there's 6%, up to 14% uvb. Why use 2,7% for birds? There using the same sun outside ain't they?

    Is this very different to a 3000K LED lamp? I have 5 (40w equivalent) in a chandelier near to my birds cage. It's a north facing room so, although his cage is by the window, the room is quite dim so the lamps are really needed during the day to brighten the space.

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    @TheParrotTeacher

    2 ай бұрын

    So the short reply is yes! A led will illuminate and serves to produce light but it doesn’t produce any significant quantity of uv light! So it depends what you want it for? If it’s just to light up the space then it’s fine! If it’s to provide uv then no it’s not serving its purpose!
