Parks and Recreation "Second Chunce" Kathryn Hahn scene

Ойын-сауық

I never upload stuff like this to KZread, but I just loved this scene from the current season (2013-14) of Parks and Rec. Kathryn Hahn is amazing in it.

Kathryn Hahn is so good. Her performance could've been super exaggerated due to the writing, but it was significantly understated--so, so good!

This is the point where this series started to tank. HARD. Knope is elected to the city council, manages to fuck it up to the point that she gets recalled at the first opportunity and this somehow means she is all set to run for state governor? Knope simply hasn't got the heart, stomach or nouse for anything near that demanding. Hell, Knope hasn't got the nouse for politics period. She's a bureaucrat. She can efficiently run things from behind the scenes, but as a politician, she has no creditability. From here on in, this series was all bullshit feminist wish fulfilment.

What the heck did Leslie and Jennifer talk about for the past 58 minutes? Did Leslie detail every machination of Pawnee's citizens that got her recalled? I'm not trying to dull the emotional impact of this scene (good job, Jen Barkley! I'll pay for an hour of your time if I had $1200 lying around), but Leslie should have just said "Pawnee recalled me, and I saw the opportunity to run again, so I'm taking it. It's a good idea right?" Jen would have said the exact same things to her, and they would have had 50 more minutes. I know, I know, Leslie turned out fine-in fact, she didn't really need Jen to orchestrate anything for her, her words were enough to make Leslie realize that it's time to move up, but still, how much more kickass would it have been?

If you watch the scene carefully, it was actually pretty clear what happened. Jen doesn't give a shit about Knope. Knope is EXACTLY the kind of person who would blather on and on for about an hour about pointless bullshit and Jen is perfectly happy to watch the clock and make concilitary noises every once in a while. But Jen will respond to a direct question, and it took Knope 58 minutes to get around to asking one. But this brings up a wider point. Wow, you are really biased here... Let's run this down. "Jen doesn't give a shit about Knope." Jen doesn't care about anyone. If you watched the show, the extent of her responsibilities is to mathematically maneuver people into the right positions. She literally couldn't give two shits about any of her clients unless they directly got in the way of her doing her job (like Ben demanding a recount). Pretty much all of her scenes show that she is basically a non-idle career rich person with very definite values on what fun and life means and using people to do it. "Knope is EXACTLY the kind of person who would blather on and on for about an hour about pointless bullshit" This is what consultants do. Their ideal work is basically listening to everything needed and then ending it with exactly what was necessary. Technically, she would have needed far more than an hour to give the right information. The fact that she was able to end the session with exactly what was needed showed how professional she was in getting down to the point of the meeting. Political consultations are not something that can be ended so quickly. "and Jen is perfectly happy to watch the clock and make concilitary noises every once in a while. But Jen will respond to a direct question, and it took Knope 58 minutes to get around to asking one." Have you seen the series? Jen will always interrupt when necessary and she is eager to do so on her terms because time is literally money to her. But how did she time it so that she gave exactly the right information when it was necessary? Because she was watching her phone. As a professional, she knew that neither Ben nor Leslie were wealthy enough to afford the time needed for a full session but chose to insure that they got their money's worth on the one hour that they got. "But this brings up a wider point. Knope is elected to the city council, manages to fuck it up to the point that she gets recalled at the first opportunity and this somehow means she is all set to run for state governor?" Have you seen the series? Knope's general direction for her work in City Council is largely positive and would have had many benefits. Her stint in city council is one where her proposals were made with the people's interests in mind. The reason why she struggled is that politics are not one where people with good intentions get results simply because they are good. Out of all the politicians, Leslie ranks very highly on the effective scale because she has the least amount of personal investments in politics. "Knope simply hasn't got the heart, stomach or nouse for anything near that demanding. Hell, Knope hasn't got the nouse for politics period. " I don't know what "nouse" is but Knope actually has all of the traits of a politician that gets results. Her stance is strong, she actively tackles big issues and is very physical with her work. While she is very talkative in her character, what is noted throughout the series is that she is a tenacious person that dreams big in a job that tramples on dreams. Her positivity isn't from her success, but her dogged pursuit of it. "She's a bureaucrat. She can efficiently run things from behind the scenes," She's not. Ben is a bureaucrat. Chris is a bureaucrat. The two of them represent people that can game the system to insure that they get results, but at their core, they are not ones to effect change, but to improve what is already there. Leslie is not an efficient person, but her heavy ideals, plans and up front personality makes her ideal as a politician because she dreams big. One of the biggest issues shown in this series is that politics is an arena that is built around the ability to turn ideals into realities. You are mistaking her forceful personality for pressure. "but as a politician, she has no creditability." A politician's job is not to be credible, but to effect change. "From here on in, this series was all bullshit feminist wish fulfilment." What the hell does feminism have to do with this? Did her being a women ever need to be in this coversation? If she talks too much, she's emotional, if she doesnt, she's robotic, what the hell does that have to do with anything? The simple fact is, over the course of the series, Leslie has shown herself to be an excellent politician with solid values, strong work ethics, unyielding tenacity and ideals for a better place. That's what you need from a politician. Especially when we are in a country that is a functional bureaucracy trying to masquerade itself as a working government.

Well I misspelled “nous”, so I can see why that might be confusing. Essentially “nous” is a British colloquialism that means a kind of combination of good judgement and practical ability, I believe the closest American equivalent would be “street smarts”. I’m going to try and keep this brief because commenting on your comments about my comments could take up page after page. So I’m going to boil this down to one part. “The reason why she struggled is that politics are not one where people with good intentions get results simply because they are good”. Yeah, and that’s why she sucks as a politician. When she was in the parks department, she was a bureaucrat, and in that environment she thrived because she’s not really competing with anybody, she’s in a relatively insulated situation and everybody in that office is, on the whole, working towards the same end. Now sure, some of her colleagues were apathetic, but none of them were actively working against her. Now you can bang on and on about how good her ideals are, but that by itself is not going to cut it. Creditability is EVERYTHING in politics. You can the most idealistic and motivated person in the world and they can still be unelectable if they have no political creditability. You might not like it, but that is the truth. She is not a credible negotiator, she’s way too gullible, she’s too easy to manipulate, she isn’t ruthless, she is not careful enough with her words, she gives no indication of knowing anything beyond parks and recs department business, she doesn’t seem to know the law particularly well and she is utterly flummoxed by obstructionism. Bottom line, if someone as inept as Jamm was able to constantly defeat her, how is she going to cope against corporate vested interests? The reason why this is all bullshit feminist wish fulfilment is not because that she’s a woman. It’s because she’s a Mary Su. Hell, Britain is actually on its SECOND female Prime Minister right now. You can absolutely have strong female leaders, and in Britain that was an argument that was won almost 40 years ago.

All of this assumes that you are in a British political system where politics tend to skew towards a more conservative outlook with an emphasis on data based results. What you are missing is that the American political system functions quite differently and that while your description fits the ideal politician in the UK, that does not cut it in America where things are run very diferently. "Yeah, and that’s why she sucks as a politician. Now you can bang on and on about how good her ideals are, but that by itself is not going to cut it." Yeah, that's not how politics work in America. the big part of the issue is that you assume politicians are groomed for their position when in reality, the thing about America is that any person can be a politician, from a career government worker like Leslie to a porn star like Brandi Maxxxx. You are really underestimating the depths of which people can sink in politics in here and the issues she deals with are not simple situations of government restrictions. She has all the tools she needs to deal with that. But the ballgame is completely different over stateside. "Creditability is EVERYTHING in politics." Credibility is part of the politics, but not all of it. Vision tends to speak louder than words in America and while it may not be realistic, it is what gets votes in this country. There is a strong emphasis on message and what the candidate stands for and that is what gets them elected or followed. The fallout comes aferwards, but the general thing about American politics is that the most followed politicians in the US are the ones that dream big and follow through. "You can the most idealistic and motivated person in the world and they can still be unelectable if they have no political creditability." Political credentials are built on message in this country. If it were like you said, no one would have voted for Trump. "You might not like it, but that is the truth." I would laugh, but you have never been in this country. "She is not a credible negotiator," That's because that isn't her job. She's a project builder which is a platform for her kind of position. She's there to prove her point, not negotiate down to something. However, she has plenty of skill in that as well. "she’s way too gullible, she’s too easy to manipulate, she isn’t ruthless, she is not careful enough with her words, she gives no indication of knowing anything beyond parks and recs department business, she doesn’t seem to know the law particularly well and she is utterly flummoxed by obstructionism." She actually knows the law really well which is part of her character. What is her notable weakness is her penchant in seeing the best in people, a trait that is not strong with political opponents, but is very strong with the people in general. Her ability as a politician is not backed by her ability in the arena, but in being able to motivate people into action. The thing about American politics is that it isn't a system built on parliament tomfoolery, but actually showing that you can do what you set out to do. "Bottom line, if someone as inept as Jamm was able to constantly defeat her, how is she going to cope against corporate vested interests?" Jamm is hardly inept. He is definitely corrupt, but not inept in his work. He knows exactly what to do in order to undermine someone and uses tactics that prey on the vulnerabilities of the American legal system. Everything he does is well within the limits of US law and while it may seem wrong to you, what he does is condoned which is why he is effective. While he would never show up in the British government, faces like his are all too common in local government positions here. "The reason why this is all bullshit feminist wish fulfilment is not because that she’s a woman." Your reasoning is all too ridiculous when the same traits in a man would not seem to garner as much criticism. "It’s because she’s a Mary Su." Mary Sues are built on a setup that creates a character that is perfect, but the series shows that the American government system and what she does is far from that point. If she were a Mary Sue, she would have become President quite quickly. She is a classic case of The Pollyanna where the sunny disposition is retained forever. She is not perfect and her life and accomplishments are not perfect. But what she has going for her is that she never gives in (which is also far from universally accepted in her setting) and that alone is what makes her a strong character. "Hell, Britain is actually on its SECOND female Prime Minister right now. You can absolutely have strong female leaders, and in Britain that was an argument that was won almost 40 years ago." Yes. But that's not Leslie Knope. She isn't someone that is built on cynicism that pervades the British government. She's not there to preserve and defend, but to actively step up to making changes. Her entire situation is built to drag her work kicking and screaming into a new century and while she certainly cannot do it alone, she really doesn't have to. A key point of what makes her story complete is that she did not accomplish what she did on her own, but with the aid of the rest of her team. She alone would not be able to make her plans happen, but the point of this entire show is that a person that believes in what they do can inspire others to help build for that same goal. It's also why you have characters like Ben, April and Chris on her team. They are people that are skilled at what they do, but work with her because they know what she does has merit.
