You can still be the resident of another state if you spend less than 6 months in another. He could even be only working during the winter. There's also nothing from keeping him being a full time student AND working! I know plenty of people who worked full time and were full time students.

That's not always the wisest thing to do, especially when you got someone that is as heated as that guy was. A lot of people don't listen to reason or anything and never think it's their fault. Keeping up on registration and plates is one of the most basic things about owning a vehicle, so the dude has no excuse for it expiring. It's one of the few things these properties I can agree with on enforcing. Mine, for example... they'll tow anyone just for parking in reverse apparently which is one of the dumbest crap I've ever heard in my life.

I think I'm with you. At the VERY least I'd have told him, as John did, that it wasn't up to me, and if you have a problem call either the office or the cops, but there is NO way he'd talk to me like that, but as was mentioned in the video and you can see John's frustration clearly, he didn't have time to wait around, but here's the prick in me based on that guy. I'd have at least tried to make time to return and grab it later that day. Respect goes a long way, and it's a two way street.

@@50buttfish Johnny does actually have other tow truck operators he can sometimes call, if multiple are working on the same site or nearby sites. He will call them if he can. It's way better than a "GORILLA", if anyone lays a hand on a tow truck operator, they can and will call someone about that kind of behavior. Usually it's the police, although it could be their tow truck friend and operator of another vehicle. Johnny has posted videos where he's called other tow truck operators who work for his company, and they have come to help deal with the person that's being difficult.

Much respect John. It has to be a rough way to make a living, not even mentioning the physicality that is involved. I am an old guy now, retired, but I have had two different "careers" and my first one was a restaurant manager in a very busy restaurant. I got so tired of people complaining about stuff just to get a discount or something free (I want to make it very clear - IF they had a legitimate complaint, we bent over backwards to make it right - which happens and in the restaurant unless someone ate the entire meal and said they didn't like it, which happened, we would do the right thing but we had a problem with take out orders because there was no way for us to actually LOOK and see what was unsatisfactory and the customers trying to scam us obviously knew that) but it became very clear that with take out orders, people would call and complain about something but suddenly they "couldn't" bring back the meal in question because they "threw it away" or something was missing or whatever. We were never accusatory to the customer when they called, we just calmly told them to please bring it back and we will replace it. The problem arose when they ate the food already and tried to call and say it wasn't satisfactory and wanted a free one next time. It got old after a while. The problem was I had VERY capable people with years of experience making and packing up the food who would NEVER put anything but perfect products in the take out containers (we specialized in rotisserie chicken and barbecue ribs - very popular and very good ) - so I know most of it was BS. Just trying to get a free meal. I am going into all this just to say I finally got fed up with it. I got SO tired of people lying and daily trying to get something for free I just became cynical, even to legitimate problems, and I knew it was time to move on. That was almost thirty years ago, and I relocated to a different state and got a job in a totally different field (not dealing with the public) and all was well. You do a wonderful job and I give you a lot of credit because I wouldn't be cross or unnecessarily mean, but I personally wouldn't tell them to call the office more than one time. Ninety seven percent of the people you deal with KNOW they are in the wrong, and you and everyone watching these videos knows THEY know they are wrong and lying, and the fact that most get housing assistance on top of it? I'd last about a week. Forgive this long and rambling post but the moral of my story is the public is VERY hard to deal with, and it's much worse these days than when I worked with them. You're a good man John.

Your story reminds me a little of my father's experiences running a wholesale butcher shop doing custom cutting of sides of beef, pork etc., dealing with the public daily. After 30 years of it, he one day had a customer accusing him of stealing part of a meat order. After lengthy explanation and argument and attempts to mollify the customer, the individual called my father a name I will not repeat. I will mention that angering a butcher is not wise. My father said that when he regained his composure, he found himself holding the customer off the floor by the front of his shirt, with a steak knife poised at his throat. He dropped the guy, who promptly left the store. My father said that he decided that day that it was time to retire and he promptly did that. Fortunately, the customer did not file assault charges. From where I stand, your burn-out story is fully understandable.

It was difficult enough maneuvering that beast, but finding a spot that allowed a w/c ramp to drop was hard. Even then, either a motorcycle owner thought that spot was a free zone created for them, or someone else parked over the lines for a host of reasons, it was very hard to get him out of the van and I would need to back it up, pull up, etc. Many people don't realize that you also need that entire space, the one with the blue lines next to the handicapped parking spot, for the w/c ramp, AND space for the w/c to roll off and turn towards the parking lot. I ended up using a curb towards the end of a store some days, parking the van, and running back to meet him. Same thing to load him back on. Dad really enjoyed his days out. To be honest, it's not the property manager's job to enforce the law... It's up to law enforcement and the owner of the car. And I know, the "requirement" of having a valid license plate is in the lease agreement. Even though that requirement has no place in the lease.

I've often said that and I agree with you. WHY have the company come out and tow it if all you're going to do is back down from a yelling or upset tenant whose fault it was in the first place? I realize John's company works on contracts with places, but once a person gets a couple of warning and a vehicle has been issued a sticker and they are given a week or two to get it right, that should be it. News flash to the guy with the outdated registration; regardless of whether you have to go across the country or next door to renew your plates, guess what? It's YOUR responsibility and your problem, no one else's. You work nine to five? Congratulations, so does the rest of the world. It's all part of being a responsible, car owning adult. I know, it sucks having to abide by the rules, and if this company just lets him get away with causing a fuss, I'd tell him to find a new place. This is why entitled people keep doing it; managers back down way too easily.

Johnny was in a bad spot where he already knew the property would not back him up, and by sitting there, he would lose other jobs. What I am saying is that the boss should have a better contract with all of the properties to prevent the managers from giving in and making them drop the vehicles without the drop fee. It keeps the tow company from wasting time and money, and give the property and out; they can explain that their contract says they cannot make them drop the vehicle without a fee. In sufficiently unusual circumstances, the manager can call the boss direct, explain the situation and they can agree together to do a free drop, but it should be a rare, odd situation.

Hey Johnny. I think most people are completely oblivious to their tag being expired being related to the tow. They are used to driving with expired plates and they simply see no relevance of that to getting towed. Maybe if you said that management gets cited for having non-drivable cars on the lot (which covers wrecked, flat tires, and expired tags) it would enlighten them.

  • @ArchimedeanEye

But a non-registered car isn't non-drivable. As long as they have insurance on it, the tags aren't a moving violation. the cities really don't give a crap about it, either, because they get the money out of you either by you registering it, or, by paying the ticket for not registering it! The only reason they use that in the criteria is that most cars that are abandoned, or pieces of crap, etc. are also not registered, and they have to apply the rules fairly, so, these people get caught up in it, when no one really cares if their plate is up to date if they are driving it daily and it's not a junker sitting in the lot.
