Park Ranger Encounter during POTA activation
03-19-2023 Hatchers Pass K-6332. Had a awesome activation in the mountains of Hatchers Pass Alaska. Pleasant encounter with a Alaska Park Ranger as always. I got my 10 contacts before being stepped on by a net that started on top of my activation without asking if the frequency was in use. I would of gladly qsy if they had asked but nope, just started the net on top of my activation. I’d say 95% of amateur radio operators are incredible to work and share frequencies with. Then you have the other 5%, like this net, who thinks they own the frequency. The latter is not how this great hobby is represented.

Thank you guys for watching. I never anticipated this getting so many views. This video was targeted to folks who made contact with me in Alaska as a digital confirmation of our contact. Since then I have had alot of folks commenting on why no explanation on abbreviations. So here goes. POTA stands for Parks on the air. It’s a program inside the ham radio world. Activators (like me) set up in these parks and other operators (hunters) try to make contact with these parks. If you want to learn more please visit parksontheair.com. Thank you!
She was doing her BEST to try to hem you up on something...you could see how she was thinking. Their first go-to is always: "I'm LE and I'm looking for crimes and you are a citizen, our enemy."
Nosey cops. I can tell you that here in Ireland, no cop ( Garda) would bother you in the least and thank god for that.
KL4KF here, love seeing fellow Alaskans getting out and on the air, I'm currently in AZ but I will keep an eye and ear out for your call! 73

Awesome video! I need Alaska for my hunter log, but its really tough being here in DC so keep on activating and I'll keep on trying to get you in the log one day. Love your setup and I use an Ft-891 as well. I'm typically a half-wave end fed wire up into a tree. But I don't see any trees in your video, lol! So looks like the buddi poles on the stand are doing really well for you. Have you tried a vertical antenna setup? I sometimes use the Chameleon 17ft whip on a mag-mount on the hood of my jeep. It gets out long and far and its very easy and convenient to use when I need to be inside the Jeep. Glad the Park Ranger was friendly. I get so many people curious, nervous or scared when they see me in a park with my gear. And regarding the Net, sometimes those Nets act like they own the freq. I understand that they have regularly scheduled Nets on the same freq, on the same day every week etc., but it would have been nice if someone would have at least tried to talk to you first and let you know that a net will be starting. Regardless, glad you got the park activated and I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing it. Keep up the good work and "POTA-on" my friend! Cheers and 73 de W3LAM.

Good greeting with the LEO for that "park". Generally, most people, including forest, park, and campground personnel, don't know or even care what ham radio or POTA may be. This were we "educate" , truthfully, and completely what you're doing. Sometimes a little printed info maybe on hand for them to read in a short time. However, if time permits, do a little research a head on the park's rules, and keep your presence "small" if possible.

@KL7ECoutdoors
Жыл бұрын
It’s always a good idea to have a guying kit. It’s something you can easily build yourself as well. You can always get a painters pole and a clamp to clap to a picnic table. I know several folks who use just that. Or build a drive over mount that you can put the painters pole next to your vehicle. Let me know what you come up with! 73
@dangermandave67
Жыл бұрын
@@KL7ECoutdoors Thanks. I've got a few rings that slip over a pole and have four or more holes drilled in them to hold guy lines. They work really well with those fiberglass Tenkara fishing poles, which are tapered so the ring just slides down until the diameter of the pole exceeds the ring inside diameter. I usually just tie the guy lines around small stones if I cannot drive in stakes. This is what I use for SOTA activations. But my recollection of the supplied shock-corded aluminum pole that comes with the Buddipole is that it is all one diameter. So I don't know how one of those rings would work. If the pole is all one diameter, there's nothing for the ring to catch on and it will slide to the bottom.
@KL7ECoutdoors
Жыл бұрын
@@dangermandave67 good point, I’ve never used the shock corded pole so I’m not sure. If you use a painters pole as it’s telescopic you should be able to guy it. If your using a base mount or a clamp I wouldn’t think you would need to guy it unless your wanting to get some altitude with the antenna. When I first purchased the buddipole I got the long version so it came with the tripod and telescoping pole. I’m pretty sure they sell that separate. It just doesn’t give you the 1/4 wave height on 20 meters. That’s the only reason I got the 10m mastwerks tripod
@K5KTM
Жыл бұрын
I found a little screw in eye that goes into the tripod thread in the bottom of the base. I run a single point guy straight down and using the legs it’s solid as a rock. A lot easier than multiple guy lines.

Thanks! So nets are on specific frequency’s at specific times. Usually they have a alternative frequency in case it’s in use. So essentially they take check ins and pass along traffic in case it’s needed. The formal question at the beginning of any net should be “is this frequency in use?” If it is, they would go to their alternative frequency or in my case I would of said yes, but I will move frequency’s for your net. In this case it was never asked and they started the net on top of my activation on the same frequency. So instead of two things going on, on the same frequency, I decided to let them have it. That’s what I meant. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful! Get on FT8 20 meters. I need Alaska for WAS! :D

Thank you! I do some ft8, mostly when I’m camping in a park. Thanks for watching! 73
It isn’t the antennas or radios dude - it’s the beard!!

I’m using HAMRS to log.
Things like the net that you mention is among the reasons why I'm not QRV any longer. 73 DE W3XWT/4
My first and only POTA attempt, I had a Park Ranger come up and ask what I was doing. I explained and he was cool with it and said have a good day and left. About 30 minutes later, a Sheriff deputy came by and asked me to pack up and move along. I let him know the Park Ranger was already there and was okay with what I was doing. His response was pretty much, I'm here now, not the Ranger, so..... I just packed up and didn't give him any grief. Thinking about giving it another try soon.

Oh wow…sorry to hear that. Yeah some folks just have a bad day and bring it to their jobs unfortunately. Yeah don’t let that stop you, as long as you were adhering to park rules I wouldn’t worry about it. Get back out and POTA on brother! 73

With everything, there is a little bad. The good outweighs the bad by a long shot though. It’s a great hobby! Don’t let that discourage you!
What antenna are you using?

It’s the buddipole on the 10m mastwerks tripod. 73 my friend!
Nets figure they own that frequency at that time but still should have cleared first

Most of the nets I know of also have an alternate frequency if the main is in use. But I would have moved as well if they asked.
