i also think that if the ball was not a shot going toward the goal should be an indirect free kick :p or if the player in on the edge (near right or left corner) with his back to the penality box, how come that become a direct shot to the goal net without any player interference

@@Soap.-- to the referee it obviously isn’t. I already posted above that I would not make this call - though I don’t officiate the professionals at that level. It’s a tough call. Wrong call here in my opinion given the defender is running and defending. But as the laws of the game state, players assume the risk of it being considered a foul if they’re perceived to have made the body bigger.

@@Soap.-- to you. If you have 10 different referees call this I bet it’s split pretty evenly. To this (highly-accredited professional) referee it is a handball. And the laws of the game do back him up if he suggests it’s “unjustifiable”. These guys get paid to understand and interpret the laws of the game. I’ve taught hundreds of new referee classes and the term “discretion” is used a lot. It’s a tough call - even a harsh one. But it’s not wrong. I simply would not likely call it.

I think the referee was expecting a matrix neo style dodge of the ball at that distance.

Agreed. And I would also question Newcastles goal from match fixing perspective. There was no power on Almirons shot and if you watch the second angle, facing the keeper, you can clearly see that he didn't fumble it but actually pushed it out.

As for me it's not 100% penalty or no, but we have to admit that the move was made by the player and stopped the cross and then it helped him to clear off the ball. As I said it's controversial, furthermore in this state of match and group placing, but there are a lot pros and cons for making that decision.
