I like to visit for a long time just to share conversstion. I also stay at a hotel where I can watch what I want to on TV and take a long shower. My Mother in law had a great sense of humor which kept me laughing. My Mother was always fixing something to eat. Enjoy them for they are gone too soon.

As a child of immigrants who grew up with my entire family in Europe when someone made the trip it was always 1-2 months. And we'd be lucky if it happened once every few years. Now my father is gone and his entire side of the family. I have sone cousins left on my moms side. We loved when family came for months. When we went there is was for a month to 6 weeks. I can't imagine someone TRYING to make their spouses parents who traveled to see them, uncomfortable so they won't stay long. When your parents are gone you'd give anything for one more visit. Stealing those moments from your spouse is absolutely horrible.

But I would trade it for the world. He was my best friend and I miss him dearly. I also told my bf's mom I would totally be ok if she lived with us one day. One point I will add, he was an amazing person and made it easy. Some family members are just too toxic.

What the ladies don't acknowledge is that not everyone is filthy rich with large homes to comfortably accommodate house guests, AND not everyone gets along with their in-laws. Just kindly and politely tell them you can have them for part of their stay and maybe look into reasonable accommodation for them close by for the rest of the time.

She would go to my brothers house too, but by the end of the visit, we couldn’t wait for her to leave. They were both hard to have around. They did not contribute they just sat. No cooking, no helping, no going to visit friends even though both of them lived here most of their lives. They were our moms, we couldn’t say no, and did our best. They’re both gone now, and even though I miss them, I don’t miss them sitting like lumps in my house complaining. Mother in law would comment about things being dusty. I gave her a rag. I really love and respect Whoopi's style of just coming out with the TRUTH!! Don't do things behind people's backs and try to make them uncomfortable...just come out with it! Why are people such cowards? Why can't they speak their minds and lay their cards on the table? If you do it gently...but TRUTHFULLY, then I would think everyone would come to terms with some sort of arrangement that would benefit all and help make for a better relationship.

It could work if you have a giant house with two separate kitchens , bedrooms very far from each other . Separate living rooms. Just because soemone had a great 3 months doesn't mean that's the same with everyone. What if you have a catty in law that tries to dominate the kitchen or has terrible body odor? Or sometimes , they act like angels for a few months , and then it changes . Or, they act nice when your spouse is around. When your spouse is gone, one will fart in front of you on purpose , cook food with hair in it , stare at you when you wash dishes , try to block the fridge by sitting in front of it , complain to your spouse your kids didn't hug them when they got home and you were too busy unloading everything from the car to pay attention to petty narcissistic demands ...

Yes, you need to be thankful about having a family, a good parents in law... But there's nothing wrong about being honest and saying that you cannot have them for seven weeks. I think is very personal. I really get along with my parents in law, I live with them one year, but I need my space. When my mom comes to visit me, because I don't live in the country I was born in, she is more than welcome, but my apartment is small, and I need to keep in mind what my husband thinks as well. So I negotiate. Ok mom, you cannot stay 2 months, but we can have you one. When my family comes we pay happily for everything, and we do the counting as well. There's nothing wrong about that, and it doesn't mean you don't love them or enjoy them.

So my mum moved herself into our house with all her stuff, 5 vehicles, boxes and boxes of stuff everywhere. She doesn’t pay for anything I cook for her everyday. We have 4 kids also she doesn’t help with them. She has done some gardening using my money which I didn’t even want her to do because it’s a rental. But if I say anything to her I’m the worst person in the world. I’m just waiting until we actually buy a house and see if we can build a granny flat or something and make rules

My parents live 5 min away and id be happy if we never saw them ever again. Everytime they’re here they criticise how wrong we are raising our kids and sometimes will even take one for weeks on end! Not allowing us to see him, finding excuses every time “oh he’s asleep, oh he’s not here, no it’s only been 5 weeks not enough!” Or purposely not answer phone / doors. Toxic Chinese mainland parent traits.

That's illegal! You have to put your foot down and say your child doesn't allowed To stay outside the house for more than a few days a month. You don't even know if your child is okay with it and you have to stand up for them.
