    Wowee pandas and pans is a literal illness and affects many kids. Any good doctor would be doing regular testing to ensure nothing like this would happen. It's more than just tics and ocd. It's inflammation around the brain that causes paranoia, intense rages, regression with fine and gross motor skills, speech impediments etc etc etc. It's different for all kids. The leading cause of death for pandas and pans is suicide. Because literal children cannot handle the suffering they're going through even when they have the best doctors in the world helping to make them better. Yes, this is a fictional show, but it's doing a terrible job portraying legitimate pandas

    @@emigem13 I think the implication is that the kid _doesn't_ have PANDAS but has been diagnosed with it anyway as an explanation for his tics and OCD because the parents wanted something to blame for his issues, rather than seeking the help the kid actually needed to manage his conditions. They even said the Doctor who diagnosed PANDAS did the same to lots of other kids, who were in similar situations.

  • @emigem13

    @emigem13

    @@kase1248 which is why it's gross they've done this. PANDAS is still a relatively new discovery in the medical world and a LOT of doctors still straight up don't believe it's a thing, or don't even know about it. It's wrong that one of its first mainstream media appearances is about how a doctor misdiagnosed a bunch of children.

  • @kase1248

    @kase1248

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@emigem13 I mean, I can't really speak for the intentions behind the use of the story-line, since this is only part of the episode and you don't see the resolution of the boy's condition or treatment. like I said, it's mostly an implication that the kid has been misdiagnosed -- the kid only shows a few of the symptoms that you have mentioned above and it is shown that these are more likely genetic (at least the OCD) than PANDAS. I _do_ know that this show draws on real life stories to build their episodes at times, so maybe this is gross but maybe it actually happened (a doctor diagnosing PANDAS like giving out candy) and the show is simply mirroring it. I mean, look at the anti-vax movement and how that started. however, I agree that, as a serious medical condition, it should be treated with respect and care and perhaps using it in the context of parents "shopping around" for a doctor who will give them a diagnosis that, essentially, shifts the blame is the wrong kind. but, like I said, I haven't seen the episode itself, only this video: do you know what the conclusion ends up being for the kid?

    I'm OCD and I can say this. OCD is one of the most stereotyped disorders. People think it's about liking to keep your house clean or organized, but the actual OCD can be really frightening to the patient and to those around them. It's not like the common sense believes it is, and most of times you are pushed to conceal your disorder (like the mom), or you'll be bullied for being weird, when not downright deemed crazy. Recently, my 8yo cousin has been showing symptoms. Her relatives were in denial and just wanted some fast solution, going to "specialists" but refusing to see a psychiatrist. People still think psychiatrists are for "psychos" and "schizos" and reject taking appropriate medication. I believe that's why the parents agreed to the antibiotics. ABs are common medicines, everyone takes them (even when they're not needed). They're not "crazy people's medicine". P.s.: No one is to blame for genetic conditions. None of my parents have OCD, yet I have it. They didn't know they'd pass me an "OCD gene". DNA likes to play these pranks. Somethings just happen and we need to accept it instead of blaming this or that. *English is not my first language

    It hit so hard to me that the parents consider OCD to be such a "big problem" that they're not willing to risk the continuation of relatively harmless tics for something as necessary as surgery and medicine for a potentially life-threatening situation. "Risk his future?" "the tics are weird"? Children (and adults) with OCD still have a future - they still deserve to be happy and successful without conditions on their - well - condition. None of the people who became successful while having OCD magically "cured" it with medicines, they learned to manage (some with help, some without) and move on, often after a difficult time from family and friends.
