A Child Protection conference is a meeting held to discuss child protection concerns relating to children. As a parent, she should be consulted throughout the process pre during and after the meeting. Typically, parents will be encouraged to attend a child protection conference. Parents may be invited to come separately if there has been domestic abuse in the family. Parents are permitted to bring friends, bring a friend or friends, bring a friend or support to a child protection conference. But the people of the friend they bring are not permitted to speak. A Child Protection Conference brings together family members (and the child/ren where appropriate), supporters / advocates and those professionals most involved with the child and family to make decisions about the child's future safety, health and development. The meeting is attended by professionals who know the family and can provide relevant information. Professionals will be required to submit a written report to the Chairperson beforehand.
Parents and carers are encouraged to attend and participate as it is recognised that they have an important part to play in the conference. The social worker and Chairperson both have obligations to help parents and the child understand the conference process and what to expect.
