I was never a para. I was a royal engineer, coming from a family of paras who served in ever battle. Normandy, goose green, every battle. My dream was to be para. A dream I never accomplished, if anyone who wants to be a para reads this. Good luck, you will go through hell, but if you wear the maroon I never could, all my respect to you. I served as a military policemen, in a garrison, with a battalion of this splendid regiment. With the exception of 1 serious incident, they were no trouble at all: complete professionals, good Rugby players, comedians, to-a-man and (off-duty) merely wanting a quiet pint with their mates, whilst scanning the arcs for Beaver ;)

Ah the military police. The blokes who would stand at the side of the road in the safety of Basra airport with speed guns and ping the drivers of the snatches coming back off patrols after being IED'd and shot at. Great blokes. Tried to trip up the young guys when writing their contact reports. Imagine going out of your way to try and get blokes who were actually soldiering and in contacts sent down. Absolute jokes. For some reason they got attached to us in Belize and got deployed in the field. Better soldiers in week 6 basic at Catterick

The training the Paras put dad through served him extremely well in Civvy street after leaving the army.A thick skinned man...rough & tumble where things got done !!!! Dad was seconded to a Craphat outfit in 1975 but always wore his large Dennison smock with wings & DZ flash over his uniform as a tribute to the Airborne brotherhood.

In fairness, I sometimes trained alongside US Marines, in fact during my P Company nightmare the US Embassy sent their Marine guards to Aldershot to run around with us, to give them something to do, to keep them up to scratch. They were fine but not really up to the hardships in the field. But that would quickly be sorted out in real combat conditions and when the American soldier is really up against it he mans up pretty quickly. Their real problem was/is the quality and training of their officers. The UK, Canadian, Australian and Nordic armies have a far better ethos amongst commisioned ranks, the Americans are sadly way behind. Perhaps a lot of this is political correctness.

As a former Airborne Infantryman myself now in my 71st year, I must tell you boys, it's a hard, gruelling slog and if you earn your red beret and wings, you'll end up with the shitty end of the stick in all theatres of war. They'll make you fit and keep you fit, but it isn't all fun and games. I wouldn't have missed it for the world, seeing the pride on my father's face in 1961, he himself a veteran on the Airborne in World War 2. Pride in your Regiment, your Battalion, your Company, your platoon, your 'stick' and yourself is a tremendous feeling, but don't let it descend into arrogance. Good luck to all of you who make it past Pegasus Company.

Fitness counts, but a willingness to keep going when you're totally knackered counts for a lot, too. Fitter men than I failed 'P' Company because they gave less than 100%. Those of us who gave 100% and maybe found a little more got our berets.
@Bhunterism

The main thing you should focus on is really your muscular endurance and stamina. Your mental strength is another. Big muscles mean nothing unless they withstand being worked, and worked and worked. Good luck too you, I hope you achieve your goal!

LYRICS: All you lads wanna join the mob just come along with me Here’s some choccy biscuits and a lovely cup of tea Forget the RAF the Royal Marines or the Navy We think you’re big and tough to be in the Airborne Infantry Got of the bus in Aldershot in 1964 They marched us on a parade ground where my father stood before Ole Drummie Williams he drilled the squad it seemed like half a day I’ve never seen such a motley crew, and then I heard him say Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Toss They handed me a rifle and a crap hat for me head A uniform that didn’t fit and plywood for me bed They woke us up at the break of dawn and marched us round the square. I wished that I was home in bed or anywhere else than there. I tabbed across to Brecon with a Bergen on me back They marched us up to Penny Fan and then they marched us back You should of joined the REME that’s what ole Drummie said You’ve still got 25 miles to go before you go to bed Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a…Monkeys It started out in Ringway 60 years ago All those boys that volunteered for jumping through the hole Ole Winnie and Boy Browning they watched with all there brass But they weren’t the ones that were jumping out and landing on there arse Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Toss They kicked me out of Fat Albert with a parachute on my back The PTI said don’t worry lad if it don’t work bring it back I felt the jolt my nuts went up the chute went round and round At least I didn’t mess me pants before I hit the ground I went for Pre-Selection with a squad of 25 They hounded out the weakest and the one’s that couldn’t survive They handed me me beret and took me by the hand A welcome to the Maroon Machine be proud of that young man Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Monkeys They sent us into battle we took it in our stride A shouting Whoa Mohamed we all jumped in with pride The Royal Marines they stood and watched they seemed so mystified Don’t worry lads we’ll sought them out you run away and hide Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a …Monkeys They always send the Para’s in because we don’t give a Toss They always send the Para’s in because we don’t give a …?

when the next big war comes, there will still be the same need for establishing forward bridgeheads for making sure that front-line shock can be achieved, that fighting men will be available for the tougher parts of that establishment. this WILL be airbourne , it may be that other troops move inward toward an established and defended front position. I cannot see any other division, battalion or anything being able to establish and hold that frontal position whilst waiting for others to join. I also feel that the need for real mobility in any armed force requires the need for an infantry battalion that can and will both adapt and respond to whatever it is tasked to do, be that floating around on usteady boats waiting like buggery to get off or doing a proper job.

@Bhunterism

The main thing you should focus on is really your muscular endurance and stamina. Your mental strength is another. Big muscles mean nothing unless they withstand being worked, and worked and worked. Good luck too you, I hope you achieve your goal!

when the next big war comes, there will still be the same need for establishing forward bridgeheads for making sure that front-line shock can be achieved, that fighting men will be available for the tougher parts of that establishment. this WILL be airbourne , it may be that other troops move inward toward an established and defended front position.

All you lads wanna join the mob just come along with me Here’s some choccy biscuits and a lovely cup of tea Forget the RAF the Royal Marines or the Navy We think you’re big and tough to be in the Airborne Infantry Got of the bus in Aldershot in 1964 They marched us on a parade ground where my father stood before Ole Drummie Williams he drilled the squad it seemed like half a day I’ve never seen such a motley crew, and then I heard him say Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Toss They handed me a rifle and a crap hat for me head A uniform that didn’t fit and plywood for me bed They woke us up at the break of dawn and marched us round the square. I wished that I was home in bed or anywhere else than there. I tabbed across to Brecon with a Bergen on me back They marched us up to Penny Fan and then they marched us back You should of joined the REME that’s what ole Drummie said You’ve still got 25 miles to go before you go to bed Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a…Monkeys It started out in Ringway 60 years ago All those boys that volunteered for jumping through the hole Ole Winnie and Boy Browning they watched with all there brass But they weren’t the ones that were jumping out and landing on there arse Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Toss They kicked me out of Fat Albert with a parachute on my back The PTI said don’t worry lad if it don’t work bring it back I felt the jolt my nuts went up the chute went round and round At least I didn’t mess me pants before I hit the ground I went for Pre-Selection with a squad of 25 They hounded out the weakest and the one’s that couldn’t survive They handed me me beret and took me by the hand A welcome to the Maroon Machine be proud of that young man Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a … Monkeys They sent us into battle we took it in our stride A shouting Whoa Mohamed we all jumped in with pride The Royal Marines they stood and watched they seemed so mystified Don’t worry lads we’ll sought them out you run away and hide Green on we’re Airborne and we know we are the best When you put that beret on you know you’ve passed the test We’ll go anywhere we’ll fight anyone we’re always in the muck They always send the Para’s in cause we don’t give a …Monkeys They always send the Para’s in because we don’t give a Toss They always send the Para’s in because we don’t give a …? pesni.guru
