The significance of the rain is to show how drastic the experiences of the 99% and 1%. You see for the rich family it just ruined a daytime event, but for the con family it ruined their entire terms for living.

The rain also had an unintended meaning, according to the director, in that it always flows down in the film, another statement about how class mobility is a lie unless you count going down.

Note on the ending: At the NY film festival, the directors and main actors spoke after the movie and Bong shared that he actually wrote the song in the background when the son was in the basement, and titled it something like "564 years", because he did the math and that's how long the son would take to save up enough to buy the place.

Maybe I can tell you the details only Koreans or people who live in S.Korea can understand. Spoiler Alarm! - The noodle (Translated as Ra-dong) is actually Jja-Pa-Gu-Li, mixing of two different cheep instant noodles(it was popular trend in Korea). And then Park's wife tells her to add Korean Beef, which is quite expensive beef, as a topping for sake of her daughter's health. It refer the situation of three families. Two poor family as instant noodles and expensive beef as Park's family. So first time she allows housekeeper to eat it when her daughter rejected to eat. But then when she saw that expensive beef is actually in it, she reverse that she gonna eat it. - Kim's family is poor because it seems like father (Song Kang-ho) was failed his business. And the man who lived in basement was mention he also failed his business. It seem they were running same brand business, 'Dae-Wang castela' (aka Big castela store). In Korea, many job is not guarantee for long-term, so when many people quit their job, they eventually open their own small business for living, like small restaurant or fried chicken house whatever their career was. Dae-Wang castela brand was also one of huge trend store in Korea, but few years ago the brand was hugely failed because of one broadcast spread out unconfirmed fact. It refers that both poor family failed not because of their own fault. They are poor just because they were out of luck. And there are so many people as Kim who failed their own business in Korea.

I'm so glad you guys noticed the importance and symbolism of stairs....to me something else that struck me was this ever presence of lines...you can feel this line that must not be crossed between the rich characters and the people who work for them...and what makes it genius is that it's never told that the line exists but the settings, the camera work, the structure of the house everything is set in such a way that you can see it. Also another thing that hit me was just how perfectly this movie makes a commentary on society...it's never a fight btw the rich and the poor....the rich are just baiting the poor and the poor are fighting each other to get a taste of that bait.

  • @Santiago-xw7dk

24:50 what i got was that the smell became a symbol for their status in society. There is nothing that they can do about their smell, since they mention it comes from the house they live in. So basically they need to stop being poor. The rich family just has to put up with the smell, like they have to put up with the poor. When the rich father plugs his nose in the end the poor father is reminded of how the rich see him. He is seen the same the husband that lived underground, someone who he considers beneath him.

The actor Song Kang-ho, you guys mention 12:16, there is interesting story behind him with Bong Joon-Ho. (it's quite well-known story in S.Korea) Maybe you guys already know. When he(actor) was unpopular, he tried so many auditions yet really didn't get a chance. And usually director or anyone in charge didn't reply back to people who get rejection at that time. They just don't reply back and that was the answer of rejection. One day he tired one audition as usual, he was failed again. But this time it was different. One young assistant director replied him back with full of sorry, compliment of act, and detail reasons of why he was failed. And said "One day I'd love to work with you." Yes It was Bong Joon-ho. 5 years later, Song became popular actor, and accepted the failed director's second film. (Bong unfortunately failed his first movie.) And that was "Memories of Murder."

Some characters in the movie often use English casually with Korean... it sounds so funny and very... pretentious. That's the way some Koreans mix English out of nowhere because they want to look upper class. That's so sad. Well, I'm Korean. The name of the main lead is 송강호... Song Kang Ho. Ya'll, I just got home from watching Parasite and I'm SO glad you posted this video today. Completely agree, one of the main themes of this film is comfort. A telling scene is when their home is flooding and even while the toilet is spewing sewage, all the daughter wants to do is find some form of pleasure by smoking a cigarette. Even as their world falls apart, their main priority is to just have some form of comfort-- much like what the husband living underground says. Like other films touching on the subject of class disparity, there is the recurring theme of the lower class being referred to as garbage, sewage, or subhumans that need to be "cleaned up". Throughout the whole film we see this degradation happen-- particularly with the father-- which makes the ending that much stronger. Overall, I agree this is one of the best of the year. I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to sleep tonight.

I think the bunker couple really erode the main family's moral justification. They are lower then the protagonist family; really nice juxtaposition during the flood of the rich family, the poor family & the couple dying in the bunker. Just because you are the victim (of class) doesnt make you nice or right. Sure 'money makes you nice' was a potent quote but how nice are they to the family lower then them. The families demise comes either in 2 ways, depending how you interpret it : 1. They carelessly destroy the lives of the bunker couple & it comes back to end them. 2. The son's notions of honour & right (symbolized by the rock); the act of kindness- undoes the family. Without a doubt the father becomes the bunker man, living in self imposed imprisonment & isolation. The mother, who ultimately kills the bunker woman, is left to live with the consequences - dead daughter, no husband, brain damaged son (depending on who you view his recovery). I think the son returning the rock to the river was him making peace with his status. I feel that the wealth (real or fantasized) he gains in the end is earned fairly not stolen/I'll gained.

I agree but I also disagree. I think being nice because you are rich is in fact true because you have the luxury, and time to do so. I dont mean monetary but mentally as well. The reason why both of the poor families acted like that is because they were both desperate. Desperate to survive. I think Kim family did feel sympathy and companionship? from the bunker couple. That's why the Kim mother opened the door and that's why Kim dad killed Parks dad. They know what it feels like to be in their shoes and they understand and they empathise with them. Even the daughter and mother and father tried to make up with them after the fight (though they didnt know they accidentally killed them)

You could also argue that if they had ignored the previous housekeeper entirely when she rang the doorbell that night, the whole charade would have gone on like it did. If the mother had just ignored the previous housekeeper, the husband in the basement might have starved or died from dehydration, but the Kim family could have continued their act. It's only because she was soft and empathic that the whole thing went bad for them.

The meaning of parasite(Both the rich and the poor are parasites!!) - There are two meanings 1) infiltrate : the poor(Gitak's family and the basement family) infiltrate their money and place. And also the rich(Park's family) also infiltrate the poor and suck up their labors. 2) aversion(abhorrence): We generally abhor the parasite. If the rich and the poor don't respect each other, there are possibility for them to abhor each other because of various reasons. The limitation of Capitalism is that the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. The poor's deprivation and the rich's ignorance toward the poor can come into "conflict". It means that the rich regard the poor as parasites and vice versa. These days, One's effort can not lessen the gap between the rich and the poor. But it is possible the rich to harmonize with the poor and vice versa. If the rich only think that there is a invisible line, the conflict can not be solved. is it possible the rich and the poor become real friends at each other? How about trying to understand each other, and how about giving consideration and respect toward each other? Then our world - The world of capitalism - can coexist between the two, and we try not to make a world where the rich and the poor abhor each other. In other words, Don't regard each other as a Parasite!! It only accelerates the demerit of Capitalism. This is why the title of this film is parasite.

I don’t know how you can watch the film, and think the ending implies that he actually will ever be able to buy the home. At the end of writing the letter he even realizes he has no way of even communicating the letter back to his father much less make the money to buy the house.

I'm not claiming to know his background, but I can say from first hand experience that being a child of a lower middle class (almost poor) latino immigrant parent, accepting that their struggle will never pay off is a very bleak outlook on life. This is one of those films that even though crazy things happen, it's still grounded in the real. The message is very real. So if I were to accept that message, I'm would mean we accept that there's no way we can move up from my current state in real life... Also, the fact that Art outright is telling us that he refuses to see the letter montage as a fantasy, says a lot. Opinions such as these can come from a very personal place. Anyways, I'm not trying to put words in his mouth, but this is how I can rationalize his opinion. Feel free to correct me.

@@franks8462 I ABSOLUTELY Understand what you are articulating. My parents are Honduran immigrants, and there is a constant Idea that you can go and achieve anything. Because if that is not the case you have to accept some very harsh realities about the world. And, yes for the protagonist to be able to live a comfortable middle class life is certianly possible and he doesn't have to live in poverty forever. But the dream of becoming a 50 plus millionarie to afford to buy that house when he is still in his 20s or early 30s, I think is VERY purposefully used to show the riddiculousness of the rags to riches dream, and I'm suprised that LME didn't read the film in that way. However, I also suspected that his desire to read the film in that manner was because of his possible immigrant upbringing. In many ways LME thought process is identical to the protagonist of the film. (though again who knows for sure) But when I took my mother to watch the film she had the same reaction as LME. And i think that is ultimately what Bong is trying to do with the film show how the poor also perpetuate the class system in many ways, by believing that they can climb up it with relative ease. Not to sound like a pedantic bitch, but I feel as though LME and my mother are both in this classist "sunken place".

I feel like clothes is another important symbol in the movie. Clothes represent the persons wealth. In the beginning the poor family’s clothes are dirty and messy. This shows that the family is poor. While the rich family had nice clothes that are clean. Also the poor family begins to wear nicer professional clothes to fake their wealth. Also when the family is in the gym the people are fighting over clothes which represents the people in the same lower class fighting over money which are clothes.

Rich families live in a big house with 3 or 4 people and servants and poor families with 8 or more people cram into a small 2 bedroom size home.. there is no social equity in wealth and health.. maybe it has always been this way in civilization for millenniums! Parasite was a cinema changing film. You are dead on right about comparing it to others like Wizard Of Oz or The Godfather, this brings international films to american audiences and really puts an eye on a more diverse set of film-makers. All of that on top of what it does to elevate story-telling and conventional film making. It also comes at a time, where the conversation of wealth in-equality is much over-due and needed. Brilliant film. Masterpiece. No other word to describe it.

How you can believe for even one moment that Kevin's plan to save up enough money to buy that house will come true is beyond me. It's an example of the delusion he's been living under the whole movie - that their luck can turn and he can make it to the top somehow. Even just the challenge of saving up enough money to afford a good college education to get a high paying job will put a stop to that plan. He'll be lucky if he can make enough money to have food and a roof over his head.

I just watched it and the smell is so focal cause the kid smells them first and actively unifies and identifies them as smelling the same and being one and idk for me it was interesting but that's it. After the scene where the rich parents complain about the dad's smell it becomes so much more relevant cause they go back home and we know that the street is full of sewer water at the poor families house because the dad says so but then that creates that sense in the viewer and to top it off Kevin's sister smokes her cigarette on top of the spewing toilet and its almost like she's either used to it or she accepts it. Obviously the next day the rich mom opens the window in the car when Kevin's dad is driving her and that makes him even more conscious but most importantly I think that Kevin's dad killed the rich dad because of the flinch the dad made when moving the body and how it was almost representative of the shame, trauma, mockery etc. that he had been facing throughout.

But of course he didn't know that the wife was accidentally killed by his mom.
