“Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films... I think we use only just one language: the cinema." - Bong Joon Ho This is probably one of the most, if not the most, important quote during the awards season.

@@cineflect poetic indeed. I'm from a country where English is just a secondary language, and people here are used to reading subtitles just for us to enjoy movies from everywhere. It's just a matter of training oneself, I guess. I hope Parasite's win will encourage more people, especially from the West, to explore movies from around the world... because some of the best movies out there are non-English.

@@CzarsSalad Agree 100%. Sadly, a lot of Americans are not accustomed to reading subtitles. Many people say they don't want to "read" a movie, they want to "watch" a movie. It's sad because they are only doing themselves a disservice by missing out on most of the films that have ever been made and are being made each and every year. That's why this is such a big deal. PARASITE has the ability to change people's minds.

@@thedon2005 nope that's what you think and could not be further from the truth. The ignorance in your words made me instantly want to hurl insults but I'll be civil and try to explain why you're mistaken. First off, Sharon is not a translator by trade. That alone is a remarkable fact considering her genius for translation. Second, she transcends your average translator with her true understanding of the subject here which is cinema. The use of her superlatives, metaphors, and vocabulary captures exactly what a movie director would have intended and that can only come from her genius of language and the subject at hand. I am fluent in both English and Korean but I have not seen anyone like Sharon in my life and many other people feel the same way hence her recognition. The speed of her translation is one thing (which is perfect) but its the subtelty in the choice of her words that binds the two languages instantaneously that truly gets to people. If you are not fluent in english and korean and understand cinema lingo, I'm afraid you will never fully understand but to say such things like shes only getting famous for her looks is quite mysognist and truly a shame.

Is it weird that I got emotional during this video? I was so moved by Bong Joon Ho winning, mainly because when he was standing on that stage I could see the true passion and love he feels for cinema and making movies, and he was so happy! As a cinephile, it made me emotional to recognize that same passion in someone else. Parasite is easily one of the greatest Best Picture winners of the decade, along with Moonlight, and Bong is definitely one of the best directors working today. I think that the Oscars have lost quite a lot of relevance , but still it's always worth paying attention when those who are relegated and marginalized by the big industry are finally shown the respect they deserve. His speech when he won Best Director is everything. It shows how deep BJH's love in creating movies and how a simple saying able to affect and inspire someone so deeply. Martin Scorsese is truly lucky to know, how he unknowingly influenced someone's passion to soar this high, while he's still alive. The fact that BJH planned each scene in Parasite in detail proves that how involved he was personally with the big picture of this movie. Because that big picture is also what had brought Memories of Murder, Mother, and others.

Parasite touches on every country that deals with poverty and poor people and no matter how you see there will always be poor people and to make an excuse on whether they won the award because of "WOKE" culture is farce. this something that even if you aren't woke you can understand. and yet even non of those actors in the cast of parasite didn't win an individual award because with a film like that there was no need for any actor in the movie to carry the film on there backs like the actor who played joker. so again i'll say your opinion is farce.

StarVision I’m not sure why you mentioned Joker, considering it DID only win best actor (and best original score). Look, I’m not saying that Parasite is like last year’s Greenbook win. It is truly great and worthy of being best picture. My opinion is just that if the Academy wasn’t so desperate to appear woke, 1917 most likely would have won more awards, even if not best picture. That opinion is not a farce. The golden globes did give Parasite an award (I forget what award), but 1917 won the golden globes best picture. Now, the Hollywood foreign press is not really concerned with being woke. Coincidence? Maybe, but idk.

Yes, it matters that the best picture of the year actually winning Best Picture legitimizes the Oscars. Yes, it matters that the Academy has broadened its own horizon and that one of South Korea’s stories was heard. And, yes, it matters that seeing South Koreans onstage is a powerful image of representation for billions of Asians. It matters that more people will seek out Bong Joon-ho’s films. And, yes, it matters that this will be the first foreign film that some people ever experience. And, it’s the first picture that has won both Best Picture and the Palme d’Or in over sixty years. And, yes, any film-maker around the world can now think that his or her film might win Best Picture. Yes, yes, yes. But _none_ of that matters more than this: Bong’s film fulfills the promise and the power of cinema-to transfix and transport, enthrall and entertain. You can see Bong’s passion for film as he pays heartfelt tribute to his fellow directors-he _wasn’t_ thinking of ground-breaking international awards and representation as he made this movie. _Parasite_ _was_ the best picture because it reminds us _why_ people like Bong Joon-ho and millions of movie-goers around the world fell in love with movies in the first place-it matters because exemplifies nearly perfectly why _film_ matters.

@일산발해인 I don't disagree with that. I don't think Bong and his crew wants to represent all Asians-Bong himself has said he doesn't even make movies to represent South Korea or Koreans. I was just conceding in my comment that C.S. is probably right to say that that's an image of representation for Asians, _whether or not_ Bong intends it to be (or you or I think it's right). My point, really, was, that Bong doesn't want or intend _any_ of that, true or not-the representation, the legitimacy of the Oscars, the international awards-he wants to make movies that move us, excite us, that mean as much to us as movies mean to him. With _Parasite,_ he rescued the movies from all those other reasons and brought them back to to the _real_ reason movies matter. _That's_ why _Parasite_ matters.

I think when you mentioned “the wall” it can be metaphorically described as the “1-inch subtitles” barrier where, upon looking over, can introduce to many great films. Not many want to put effort in reading subtitles while watching a film in a different language but still a large number did look over and rewarded it 4 oscars. This is a huge step in cinema history and it took one masterpiece to continue those steps.

I saw all of the top contenders for Best Picture, and it really came down to about three. Of them, Parasite clearly had the best script/writing of them. There were several scenes in it that will be unforgettable: when the old maid rings the doorbell and is seen on the video, when the wife sees the bloody napkin thinking it is TB, the drinking and dinner scene just before the doorbell ring, when the husband living underground is revealed, when the old maid has them blackmailed, when they are stuck under the table while Mr and Mrs Park are on the couch, and a few others. The editing was phenomenal imo, and the style used was passionate and expert. The acting in it was surprisingly good, and especially the daughter of the Kims (she is a very good actress) and the Parks wife (imo her and the daughter of the Kims really made the movie as far as acting although everyone was good). I was very glad it won since imo 1917 lacked a good script and lead acting despite its fine cinematography and OUTIH underachieved in the script department a little as well. Beyond the aforementioned reasons listed as to why it was important, would add that because Parasite was very artistically made and written, it also restores hope that artistic movies can win the top prize, which helps to promote originality and creativity in future movies being made, as opposed to the same old themes and kinds of stories.

Parasite winning shows the Academy actually learning their lessons from previous years, particularly letting Roma win some big awards only to give Best Picture to Green Book (Roma was robbed). This movie was incredible and Bong Joon-Ho deserved all four awards. Overall, this year’s Oscars has been much better. Here’s hoping this lead the Academy to a bright new future.

As good Roma was incredible as a film, I read a very good analogy to what Roma was as a film. That is, Roma acts and serves almost like a coffee table book of an arthouse project. Its drab, drawn, and highly artistic. It reminds me of a Korean film known as Burning which has similarly very arthouse-like vibes. Moreover, the meanings and inscriptions are oftentimes supremely hidden and overly artistic for the general audience to observe. Now why Parasite is so special, is that while it does serve the purpose of conveying a complex message, it does it in a way that is witty, subtle, and highly entertaining. Hence, while Parasite delivers as much meaning as any Best Picture film should, it also carried the artistic and entertaining values of a summer blockbuster. I think that is why it was able to win Best Picture when the year previous, another Korean movie by the famous director Lee Chang Dong (hes referenced in the video above) named Burning didn't even get past the Shortlist for foreign films. The entire movie was so much like a coffee table book similar to Roma.

The general public isn't used to movies like Roma, but at least the Academy should recognize the better films inspite of popularity. That movie was masterfully done and it was the best of that lot. Had roma and parasite been nominated the same year for example, parasite would win for reasons you mentions in your comment

Day M good point. Honestly I think Parasite, while it was a great movie, was also the perfect movie for the academy to gain public support once more. • @danielchun431

Day M also I think it does come down to subjectivity. Roma was a masterful film hands down. However as naive as it may seem I do believe films should have the ability to entertain. Roma simply sent me through a downhill of emotions and managed to wipe my tears at the end. On top of that it exposed me to the beauty of the art that existed in the film. I’m a novice when it comes to movies, hence that is why I think I may think lile this however I think it is fair to also judge the film on entertainment value. Like I think Parasite, while loaded with meaning and masterful cinematography, managed to still be entertaining and have the pace of an action/thriller while still delivering the same punch.

There have been many masterpieces but none of the movies have questioned your existence, ethics and morality. The winner is the director and actors as well. No over the top drama which in itself is a master stroke by the actors. The only thing that lingers on your mind is the a long list of questions. What a masterpiece!! Bravo..

As "shalllow" as it may be perceived it still does affect peoples judgement and for many people they would have only heard of the film, band, artist etc through these award ceremonies. Foreign cinema has always had a foot in the door but I hope this moment has blown the doors wide open, and leave people hungry for more.

I am so happy that this historic moment happened this year, because this was the first year I saw all of the best picture nominated films and became super invested in the oscars themselves. Edit: This video was excellent and I cried at the end

An excellent commentary. It is time we look at ALL movies everywhere when giving out awards. This is not the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it ALL Motion Pictures. The wall is actually the wall of not wanting to 'read' movies with subtitles. Once people climb that wall and get over it, we will truly bring down the walls surrounding and excluding great movies from being recognized and enjoyed.

When Parasite was recognized for Best International Film, I said to myself "Here we go again." Thankfully I was wrong and it won Best Picture with a super standing ovation. I gave one HUGE clap, but because my hands are in such horrific pain, when I did, it caused such intense pain, that I could not give anymore. Yes, I 100% agree that this is the biggest win in Best Picture history for a truly stuck up academy on its own level that as a requirement was needed to be gunned down by a true masterpiece, Parasite. Hopefully by it's inspiring win and the gracious acceptance speeches, people will be more open to international films and subtitles which in reality should not bother anyone. International films offer culture, art, insight, action, drama, horror, comedy, and every genre imaginable that is not bankrolled by the Hollywood make a buck ideal.

Greetings from Lebanon! ( a small and extremely flawed country in the Middle East). I’m so happy this masterpiece is recognized by the academy and as a college student with an interest in filmmaking I believe that great work should be seen and celebrated. I know that a movie doesn’t have to be acknowledged by the Oscars in order to be a great movie and I understand many people frustrations with the “woke” movement but believe me there are so many people around the world that have something to say and in my opinion we as people should give them a chance. I’m so sorry and I feel so ashamed of what some of my people have done in the past and maybe still do, those portrayed in the media don’t represent anyone but themselves. I strongly believe that we as people of the earth can live peacefully together with each of us having their own culture and set of beliefs but open to hearing others and maybe honoring them if we loved what they offered, this, in my opinion is the only way we can love our differences and enrich our cultures. I am also really grateful for the existence of a platform like KZread that let creators like you share information and start conversations. Woah I wrote a lot, maybe I said many unrelated things, but if you read this far thank you!

Thanks for your comment! YES Americans don’t give enough credit to foreign films, which is sad because they offer a glimpse into a whole other world. I hope you can make movies someday. This is why the invention of the Internet, I believe, has brought the world closer together. What did you mean about Lebanese cinema, that you were ashamed of it? And how is Lebanon right now, I was reading that there’s lots of turmoil right now. Hope you are safe.

mydogiscrazy13 thanks for the reply! Well I actually meant that I was not very comfortable with the way many people in my country think or act, like in general. As for Lebanese cinema, there are some good movies but the majority are either about war or sectarianism. So there’s no diverse themes being explored. I really can’t blame anyone for this however, because as you said my country is passing through a lot right now and always have been really. My father grew up with a civil war that lasted for approximately 20 years only to face an economic crisis now that will most likely last 20 more. So yeah, the situation isn’t great, but I’m doing fine so far, and staying productive. I think art and the internet help me cope with the current situation. Hope you are well as well! Have a nice day/night.

Great video! I'm from Argentina and i loved Parasite so much (2nd favourite movie of 2019 for me). I was screaming out of excitement when it won original screenplay, directing and best picture (especially this category) My parents didn't know what was going on, but i was super cheerful with that victory

I was expecting 1917 to win. Honestly, if 1917 won, the world would have forgotten about it by now. Foreign cinema, (not including the UK, Australia, etc) has always been amazing, since Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini, etc, and I’ve always felt angry at the Oscars for never recognising foreign cinema. I’m so glad they’ve finally been recognised, and Parasite is definitely a film that deserves the title as the first Non-English film to win Beat Picture.

Bruh what do you mean the world would forget about 1917 by now, that films is just as good as Parasite IMO (but they are two very different films, so there's almost no use in comparing them). 1917 is such a revolutionary, technical achievement and will stand the test of time. As a war movie, it's very easy to be forgotten about and blend in among the rest, yet 1917 was so unique and so well done that it will go down as one of the best war films ever,.

MetaPlanet While Birdman’s camera work is noteworthy, it Pales in comparison to 1917. 1917 was way more challenging to get that one shot style because it went through so many different environments: trenches, craters, fields, and more. Also, the Revenant is probably considered one of Iñaritu’s best films, at least better than Birdman. The revenant also has long takes with hidden cuts. Not very many people actually saw Birdman, but it might still become a cult classic. Nonetheless, I think the revenant will become more iconic. Anyhow, Parasite is definitely worthy of being best picture and is a fantastic film, but I feel like the Academy and some people overlooked 1917. I felt it was a near perfect war film, and really just a near perfect film, I was seriously blown away, from the cinematography, to the tension, to the sets, to the characters and the acting. That’s just my opinion, and I understand if you were underwhelmed by 1917, but I am almost certain this film will become a classic and will be revered in the future.

Parasites take without giving anything back. Our lives touch and are touched. We are not like stinking bugs, we are like bees and ants. Social animals. We build more and better together, even if Marxism infected everybody into thinking differences in achievement should always lead into resentment.
