Paraphonic Strings & El Capistan : That Vangelis Blade Runner Sound

Played in one go, through a Strymon El Capistan pedal, and with a Valhalla Reverb on the output. The bits where the video pans are where my naked torso comes into shot. I decided to spare you this.

Could you do a 10 hour piece next time? Thank you.
This is one of the best demos I have ever heard. I keep coming back and watching it from time to time.

This is the video that got me to go and get a Paraphonic 505, over six years ago. It's been a love affair ever since. Thank you, Tim, for your beautiful and stunning demonstration of the magic of the 505.

i just saw it and, well, now i'm stuck with the prospect of planning to get one as well 🙈😄...i have Juno-6, JX-10, JP-8000 but this is something else...wonderful use of effects 👌🏻
When those low notes hit. Holy shit what a massive wall of sound
Well, I would call this performance a real masterpiece. I find myself listening this again and again... 😀👏
Like a flight through a far away gas giant's atmosphere. Amazing.
Like tears in the rain ❤
More bands or artists that sound like this? It makes me feel like I'm back home...somewhere safe, somewhere majestic...

Some Tomita pieces have a bit of this feel like on the LP Snowflakes Are Dancing
The absolute best example I’ve ever heard of what the 505 can do. Bravo!!
Utterly gorgeous, especially when those low strings kick in.
My mission in life is to listen to and play the fattest pwm and sawtooth pads possible. I think you out-Vangelis'd Vangelis. WOW! I can't believe you got this sound out of that single paraphonic synth. Great work.

Thanks so much. That’s a great mission :) It’s a magic combination of modulations - the built in ensemble effect (from the dimension D), the wow & flutter delay repeats on the El Capistan, and finally the modulated tail on the Valhalla Vintage Reverb.
Wow! I haven't had goosebumps in a long while. Sublime.

Paraphonic 505 was my first synth in 1978 and I always loved the sound, later got a VP330 with a similar sound, vocoder added. Roland chorus really sparkles on both. The divide down technology gives it a great character, somewhere between an organ and a synth. Inspiration to put it through the strymon. Still a great sound and rare ancient synth. You do it justice, nice work.

Hi Sam, I hadn't heard of divide down technology before so I've been reading up on it. Interesting ... I wonder if that's why some paraphonic machines have a kind of 'volume stealing that happens when playing large chords, or spreads. It's actually nice though and kind of glues the instruments together, giving it a self-contained character. Thanks for commenting :)

@@TimOliver Yeah Tim, the old paraphonics were totally polyphonic like an organ or EP. It was the only way to cost effectively get envelop control on a polyphonic synth back in the day until the Prophet 5 showed them the way. The popular ones were the 505, Solina/String Ensemble and ARP OMNI as I remember but there were a bunch that were fully polyphonic, every key made a sound - Elka, Korg, Logan, and Hohner all had a verson, mostly string machines. Perhaps there was power fluctuations causing the fall off you hear - more keys, more draw down. But these old keyboards had character and fully polyphonic not like some of the new "paraphonics" the Pro2 and Sub37 that only divide down to 4 voices or only 2 in the sub.
I always come back to this video, it just sounds incredibly beautiful...
I watch this video over and over. Best string machine. Expertly played.
I've watched C-beams glitter in the moonlight.
Pity its not an hour long, Much respect.
What a sound shower - incredible! That bass is killing me - I instantly stopped working and put Blade Runner on :-)

This is the best demo I've seen of this synth, the track is stunning, full of feeling....awesome sound.
I come back to this again and again - this is truly beautiful and leaves me only wanting more, MORE ! MORE !!!
Just found out about this synth. It blows my mind.
Love it when the bass comes in. Epic.
Amazing composition and fantastic strings, the Roland RS-505 sounds so full and lush. Beautiful ambient soundscape... took me on a journey beyond. Thanks for this great piece, well done.
It's amazing how, because of technical limitations, manufacturers of the 1970s worked around those limitations, and ended up with such a rich, moving sound.

@@dinorocker8647 That's perhaps a bit too broad. I'd love to get my hands on a Novation Summit or a Waldorf Quantum, for example. And let's not forget how brittle these vintage instruments are.

Well I prefer more of the vintage re imaginings of these vintage synths that have the look and sound of that era but have better components that'll last longer.@@SeverityOne

I hope you know I've probably watched this video more than any other on KZread (that might be an exaggeration). Such a great keyboard! Such a huge sound! I like your chord progressions, too -- someday a musicologist will do a study of 80s chord progressions and explain what makes them sound so great, and why so many of them were in minor keys.
El Capistan is one of the greatest pedals around, and one of my favorites!
beautiful
Such a nostalgic sound! Enjoyed this.

Love those strings. And that bass!
I must have played this a thousand times over and over, it is a stunningly beautiful demo of a fantastic instrument, thanks for posting.
Best 4.43 mins EVER!!! ;-)
I can't get enough of it, and I love the AIR that comes out of my subwoofer when the bass notes kick in! I can feel it in my reclinerrrr!!😆😆😆.. I have gotten stoned to this many times as well with very fine weed..

I smoked weed back in the 80's and listened to some music. I heard things I never heard before and the music sounded one hundred times better and like I was there with them. The tune totally rocks.
lush sounding, beautiful
Absolutely epic. Just lost myself in a different universe. Speechless...
This is so beautiful, thank you for such an epic demo
This is so beautiful! Great play!

What a gorgeous sounding instrument and you have the right touch 👍👍
lovely sounds
I find myself coming back to this to admire the gorgeous sound of rs505 and that legendary low end... Great job on the composition too, it feels so comfortable to drown in that ocean of sound.
Sounds gorgeous
the very organic sound goes very well with the capistan. Polyphony is Beauty. Nice!
Absolutely superb!
Beautiful strings with a nice synth!
mesmerizing
Probably the coolest sound I've ever heard, damn.
By far the best KZread demo for this wonderful synth. I have a VP330 but this is magic too
Have to make a second comment This guy is a genious. I have seen many demos of the paraphonic 505. But nobody knows better than him how to use it. Congratulations
Wow! Super lush sound, so awesome!
Absolutely mint, absolutely mint. Bravo!
the Roland Paraphonic RS505 is my first analog synth and I still loves this instrument very much!
This is so beautiful, thankyou! This goes straight into my vintage synth wishlist. :)

This got me thinking, if the robot was allowed to get older and started doting would he sit in a comfy chair listening to this thinking I've seen something somewhere, I just cant remember what?Just thinking'zall
I always bawl like a big baby at the end where Rutger Hauer's character dies. He accepts that his end is nigh and stops trying to kill Deckard. He just talks about what he has seen in his life. Then he releases the bird as he dies in the rain. So sad and symbolic. Gets me every time. Tears in my eyes now just thinking of it. Nice demo. Thanks!
This gear ist really fantastic and - together with the String Melody II - my favourite stringer. I dearly hope Behringer will clone the RS-505. But with 4 octaves and not 3 as the forthcoming VP-330 clone. Alone, listen to the brass section. It's so impressive! Especially when using effects, stringers sounds are unbeatable! Btw, well done video and very nice melodies.
