Paraphonic Strings & El Capistan : That Vangelis Blade Runner Sound

Музыка

You can now purchase this track on Bandcamp !

Played in one go, through a Strymon El Capistan pedal, and with a Valhalla Reverb on the output. The bits where the video pans are where my naked torso comes into shot. I decided to spare you this.

My mission in life is to listen to and play the fattest pwm and sawtooth pads possible. I think you out-Vangelis'd Vangelis. WOW! I can't believe you got this sound out of that single paraphonic synth. Great work.

Thanks so much. That’s a great mission :) It’s a magic combination of modulations - the built in ensemble effect (from the dimension D), the wow & flutter delay repeats on the El Capistan, and finally the modulated tail on the Valhalla Vintage Reverb.

Paraphonic 505 was my first synth in 1978 and I always loved the sound, later got a VP330 with a similar sound, vocoder added. Roland chorus really sparkles on both. The divide down technology gives it a great character, somewhere between an organ and a synth. Inspiration to put it through the strymon. Still a great sound and rare ancient synth. You do it justice, nice work.

Hi Sam, I hadn't heard of divide down technology before so I've been reading up on it. Interesting ... I wonder if that's why some paraphonic machines have a kind of 'volume stealing that happens when playing large chords, or spreads. It's actually nice though and kind of glues the instruments together, giving it a self-contained character. Thanks for commenting :)

@@TimOliver Yeah Tim, the old paraphonics were totally polyphonic like an organ or EP. It was the only way to cost effectively get envelop control on a polyphonic synth back in the day until the Prophet 5 showed them the way. The popular ones were the 505, Solina/String Ensemble and ARP OMNI as I remember but there were a bunch that were fully polyphonic, every key made a sound - Elka, Korg, Logan, and Hohner all had a verson, mostly string machines. Perhaps there was power fluctuations causing the fall off you hear - more keys, more draw down. But these old keyboards had character and fully polyphonic not like some of the new "paraphonics" the Pro2 and Sub37 that only divide down to 4 voices or only 2 in the sub.

I always bawl like a big baby at the end where Rutger Hauer's character dies. He accepts that his end is nigh and stops trying to kill Deckard. He just talks about what he has seen in his life. Then he releases the bird as he dies in the rain. So sad and symbolic. Gets me every time. Tears in my eyes now just thinking of it. Nice demo. Thanks!

This gear ist really fantastic and - together with the String Melody II - my favourite stringer. I dearly hope Behringer will clone the RS-505. But with 4 octaves and not 3 as the forthcoming VP-330 clone. Alone, listen to the brass section. It's so impressive! Especially when using effects, stringers sounds are unbeatable! Btw, well done video and very nice melodies.
