Paragliding off Everest · Pierre Carter
A South African daredevil makes the first legal flight off Mount Everest, leaping off with a paraglider near the summit at an altitude of nearly 8,000 metres. "It was a beautiful flight down," Pierre Carter says, "above the clouds and then through the clouds and down to Gorakhshep."

Probably the safest way to get down.

As long as there is no wind.
I think it is more impressive that he brought his drum all the way up there . . .

Wow, that’s one way to get off the mountain in spectacular fashion. I’d imagine it took quite sometime to get a good weather window with minimal wind. Amazing footage!

Right? Wonder why they didn't just shoot for the summit? Maybe couldn't get all that gear across the traverse or was to crowded to even try

@@snowrob0the air at the summit of mount everest is way too thin for paragliding I think, so that's probably the reason why they didn't go from the summit

This has been my dream for years I never understood why no one did this so I'm glad you have so that others like me might one day have the chance to do the same.

People have, but he was the first to do it legally i.e. with a license from the Nepalese government.
🎉🎉🎉finally! Seems like the best way to take everest!!❤❤❤ and another David Snow video. Thanks
What an experience, stunning
Incredible! Where did he land? I’m guessing way past base camp and close to one of the villages!
Surprising he could initially catch enough air!

Nice flight ❤ 👈
Certainly better than snowboarding down Mt Everest (such as Marco Siffredi did in 2001. . . He hasn't been seen since.) Looking up his story I started wondering about paragliding, and came across this; not knowing about it. Pretty cool.

He was successful in 2001. The first person to do it. The tried again in 2002 and he was never seen again.
Suppose this is one way to combat the notion that ‘80% of accidents happen on descent’!

I was thinking this might actually be safer, but then I watched the video, and no, it definitely had its own risks.
Now that was cool 😎. Extremely Dangerous, but so is climbing, so why. Not.
High winds is the trouble.
WOW! 😲
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely incredible
Holy shiat 🙌🙌
Makes me wonder when the first illegal flight was.

"French alpinist and pilot Jean-Marc Boivin was the first person to fly a paraglider from Everest in 1988. Bertrand ‘Zebulon’ Roche and Claire Bernier made a tandem flight from the summit point in 2001. Ten years later in 2011, Sano Babu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tsheri Sherpa became the first Nepali paragliders to jump off the Everest conducting a tandem flight. As such, Carter is only the second person to conduct a solo flight after French alpinist Jean-Marc Boivin."
Considering most people climbing Everest die on the way down; flying an easy to start single skin paraglider down after summiting, is a no brainer if you already know how to paraglide. Of course you will have to choose a day with very little wind. But even if the wind was 10 or 15 m/s, I would have gotten help to launch, just to get the easy way down. In an hour you would be down in a green valley somewhere!
That's a great shot of the yellow band..@ 1:22 that's one way of putting how high everest really is! I wonder if you have to approach acclimatization differently for such a rapid decent?

rapid descent isn't a problem, if anything he wouldn't need to spend as much time acclimatizing

Acclimatization is for reaching the higher altitude. The air is very thin and the top is in the death zone. So it's the same for all no matter the decent.
Unbelievable
The South Col is NOT the summit. Not by a stretch.
Anyone know the odds of timing it just right so that you reach the south col with the weather to paraglide off?

It’s not a storm wind all the time, decent weather also, in the climbing window, and depending if your take of is sheltered from the higher winds, the wind has mostly one dominant direction so obviously it is doable.
Stop beating that drums spoils the whole experience
I looked up the definition of "insanity" in the dictionary and the only entry for the word was a link to this video.

the thumb nail makes you think it was from the summit. this is an autumn ascent, hard work but not Everest. its from the col of lohtsi. nice try. its okay to simply state the truth, and not detract from your footage. nice shots, bet it was fun flying from near Everest.

They don’t say summit anywhere in the title. Its not the col of lohtse. South col is a route route established by a British team in 1953 to climb Everest from the SW. A north face route, Neverest Buttress, established by an international team in 1988, to climb Everest joins the South col on the col between Everest and Lohtse. A col is the lowest point on a ridge between two peaks. I think its fair to say Everest in this situation as it doesn’t really belong to either mountain, but both. There are also several Lohtse routes that go through the col as well.
Music over this just ruins everything. Had to mute the video to be able to watch.
It's like their committing suicide with the hopes that they live.
